A study of the value of the seven-point checklist in distinguishing benign pigmented lesions from melanoma.

A seven-point scoring system has been adopted by the Cancer Research Campaign to help non-dermatologists recognize melanoma (MM). Its value is reviewed in the light of increasing referrals of pigmented lesions. One-hundred and ninety-five patients (M:F, 43:152; mean age = 43 years, s.d. = 19) were asked whether their lesions possessed the seven points before diagnosis. The dermatologist assessed the signs. Six patients were unable to comply and some had multiple lesions; thus, 216 lesions were fully assessed by patient and dermatologist, and six by the dermatologist alone. Histology was obtain

Pemphigus vulgaris after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination: a case report.

BACKGROUND: As many people worldwide have been vaccinated, more triggered autoimmune bullous diseases have been noticed. We reported a case of new-onset pemphigus Vulgaris after COVID-19 vaccinations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50 years old Syrian female presented with multiple erosions on her extremities, in addition to oral erosions and genital ulcers, after the 2nd dose of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The lesions were multiple tenders and well-defined, reddish erythematous oral ulcers. At the same time the Skin examination showed hyper-pigmented patches over the extremities, a sequel of ruptured b

A clinical mimicker of melanoma with distinctive histopathology: Topical silver nitrate exposure.

Exposure to silver-containing compounds can result in reversible discoloration of the skin, presenting as an irregular brown or black macule, which can have a clinical appearance similar to melanoma. Both the clinical scenario and the histopathology are unique. Silver nitrate darkens with exposure to light, and the area can appear to change over time. On microscopic examination, there are coarse pigmented granules dispersed throughout the corneal layer, and largely absent from the remainder of the epidermis-although the precise location may depend on the duration of topical exposure. While arg

Uncommon presentation of pigmented paraungual basal cell carcinoma on the first toe treated with total excision.

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common types of skin neoplasm. The finger, toe, and nail unit are uncommon and rare locations of BCC. Only a few patients with foot BCC have been reported, and ungual BCC is even less frequent. We present a patient with a BCC on the left first toe. Clinically, it appeared as a brown-colored plaque with an irregular border on the nail fold and dorsum of the left thumb. Histopathological findings were consistent with the pigmented type of BCC. Surgical approach with subsequent full thickness mesh graft led to a complete remission. Follow-up at 10 months

[Gallbladder metastasis of melanoma: Immunohistochemical and molecular data of a case and review of the literature].

We report the case of a 57-year-old man, who is hospitalized for the surgery of a gallbladder mass associated by an increase in fluorodeoxyglucose-activity on positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan. This is an incidental finding occurring during monitoring of a skin melanoma. A cholecystectomy is performed. Microscopic examination identified an infiltration of the gallbladder wall by a proliferation of atypical pigmented spindled melanocytes with numerous mitoses. The immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the melanocytic nature of this proliferation with the staining of HMB-45,

Mazabraud syndrome associated with McCune-Albright syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

Mazabraud syndrome is a very rare benign disorder characterized by the association of monostotic or polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and one or multiple intramuscular myxomas. McCune -Albright syndrome is a rare benign disorder characterized by the association of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, cafè-au-lait skin pigmentations and endocrine dysfunction, such as precocious puberty, diabetes mellitus, goiter and breast fibroadenomatosis. The association of Mazabraud syndrome and McCune-Albright in the same patient is an anecdotal event. We report the case of a 28-year-old girl with Mazabraud syndrome…

Different Advanced Therapeutic Approaches to Treat Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a hypopigmentation disorder that is caused by the loss of melanocyte activity for melanin pigment generation. Vitiligo is distinguished by the existence of white macules. Vitiligo affects 0.1%-2% of individuals of different populations, irrespective of skin color, ethnic origin, race, or age. Although the actual mechanism behind this disease is not yet known, it is thought to be caused by a cumulative effect of various mechanisms (e.g., neurohormonal, genetic, cytotoxic, oxidative stress, autoimmune, and biochemical). This article reviews the published literature on various treatme

[Childhood eruptive nevi: a case report].

"Eruptive nevi" is a phenomenon characterized by a rapid appearance of multiple melanocytic nevi. It is mainly developed in three groups of patients: those with systemic immunosuppression, bullous cutaneous disorders, and a melanocytic stimulation drug. We report on the case of an 11-year-old boy who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A few months after the beginning of the chemotherapy, he developed multiple pigmented lesions over the skin. Eruptive nevi syndrome has been described in the literature in 29 cases in the context of severe bullous disease and in immunosuppression. N

Epidermal Choristoma of the Tongue Mimicking a Congenital Melanotic Macule.

We report the fifth case of epidermal choristoma of the oral cavity in a Caucasian newborn with a congenital melanotic macule on the dorsum of the tongue. Epidermal choristoma is an exceedingly rare and benign condition probably caused by a developmental abnormality. It is identified according to the presence of normal skin in an abnormal location. Histologically it is identified according to areas of stratified epithelium and hyperpigmentation of the basal layer along with cutaneous adnexal structures (hair follicles, sebaceous or sweat glands). The clinical presentation is variable, but most

Spontaneous regression of an epidermolysis bullosa nevus on the sole.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of inherited rare diseases characterized by fragility and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. An EB nevus (EBN) is a very rare acquired nevus that occurs only in patients with EB. An EBN usually arises in an area of previous blistering, and frequently has an atypical appearance that mimics malignant melanoma. We describe an older man with an EBN on the sole. Physical examination revealed irregularly pigmented band-like black macules on his right sole, suggestive of malignant melanoma. Dermoscopic examination showed a parallel furrow pattern with a

Large neurofibroma of the labia majora: A case report.

Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant progressive disorder with an incidence of approximately 1 in 3000 live births. Its recognized features include hyper-pigmented skin lesions (cafe-au-lait spots), neurofibromas, iris hamartomas, macrocephaly, central nervous system tumours, defects of the skull and facial bones, and vascular lesions. Involvement of the external genitalia is extremely unusual. This report describes a case of a vulva neurofibroma in a 15-years old teenage girl with no history of trauma or features of Von Recklinghausen's disease. Treatment involved total excision of the

Multiple cutaneous malignancies in a patient of xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a genodermatosis characterized by photosensitivity and the development of cutaneous and internal malignancies at an early age. The basic defect underlying the clinical manifestations is a nucleotide excision repair defect, leading to defective repair of DNA damaged by ultraviolet radiation. These patients exhibit enhanced sensitivity to ionizing radiation. Patients with xeroderma pigmentosum who are younger than 20 years of age have a greater than 1000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancer. Early detection of these malignancies is necessary because they are fas

The 308-nm excimer laser in the darkening of the white lines of striae alba.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the true efficacy of the 308-nm excimer laser for darkening striae alba using a modified approach. METHODS: Ten subjects were treated using the excimer laser on the white lines of striae, while the normal skin near to and between the lines was covered with zinc oxide cream. Assessment of efficacy was performed by colorimetric scores based on mexameter measurement and also digital photographs showing before-after laser therapy, which were compared by two independent dermatologists. RESULTS: The mexameter-based data analysis showed that the excimer laser was weakly effec

Dermatoscopic features of cutaneous atypical fibroxanthoma: three cases.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is an uncommon, low-grade, malignant, spindle-cell tumour of fibrohistiocytic histogenesis, which can mimic other malignant skin tumours, such as basal and squamous cell carcinoma (CC), melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Three cases of AFX were examined by dermatoscopy, which revealed white areas and an atypical polymorphous vascular pattern characterized by the concurrence of different structures: linear, dotted, hairpin, arborescent and highly tortuous vessels, irregularly distributed over the surface. Seborrhoeic elements and photoageing may be accompany

Evaluation of antioxidant properties of monoaromatic derivatives of pulvinic acids.

The natural mushroom pigment Norbadione A and three other pulvinic acids were shown by our group to display very efficient antioxidant properties by comparison with a collection of potent molecules including catechols, flavonoids, stilbenes, or coumarins. Despite numerous publications on robust and straightforward synthetic access to pulvinic acids by us and others, no report has been made to unravel the structure-activity relationships that govern the striking antioxidant activity. Herein is presented the synthesis of 18 diverse pulvinic acid derivatives and the study of their radical scaveng

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the talonavicular joint: a case report and review of the literature.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a locally aggressive synovial proliferative disorder of unknown aetiology affecting the linings of joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. A 22-year-old female patient presented with a 3-year history of an increasingly painful swelling on the dorsum of her right foot. Examination revealed a 4 cm x 2 cm swelling that was fluctuant, tender on palpation, unattached to overlying skin and partially mobile. A firm, pedunculated intra-articular lesion from the talonavicular joint was removed at surgery. Histology revealed a nodular lesion of stromal cells and nu

Vitiligo: compendium of clinico-epidemiological features.

Vitiligo, an autoimmune disorder characterized by localized and/or generalized depigmentation of the skin and/or mucous membranes, is a well-recognized entity. The imperatives of its epidemiology both in rural India and in global reckoning have been highlighted frequently. Its morphology is striking and is characterized by asymptomatic ivory/chalky white macule(s) that may be frequently surrounded by a prominent pigmented border, the 'trichrome vitiligo'. However vitiligo may have morphological variations in the form of: trichrome, quadri-chrome, penta-chrome, blue and inflammatory vitiligo. I

Chromoblastomycosis.

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycotic infection caused by pigmented or dematiaceous saprophytic moulds ubiquitous in the environment. The most common etiologic agents are Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Cladophialophora carrionii, both of which can be isolated from plant debris. The infection usually follows traumatic inoculation through penetrating thorn or splinter wounds. The fungal agents develop as small clusters of cells known as muriform bodies. Several months after the injury, painless papules or nodules appear in the affected area progressing to scaly and verrucose plaques. Dir

[Mycosis fungoides of the eyelids. Two case reports].

Mycosis fungoides is a distinct variant of cutaneous T cell lymphoma. We describe two male patients presenting with the third stage of the disease at the age of 56 and 67 years. The patients had large, patchy pigmented tumors all over the face and eyelids. Incisional biopsy from the lid skin revealed full-thickness involvement of the dermis by malignant lymphocytes, angiotropism, and rare figures of epidermotropism. Immunohistochemical studies showed that these malignant lymphocytes expressed CD2, CD3, CD4, CD5, and CD8 antigens but were negative for CD7 antigen. Multiagent chemotherapy and PU
