Recent advances in the study of perinatal mental health: Epidemiology, psychopathology and intervention.

Perinatal mental health has been increasingly recognized as one of the most prevalent and consequential complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Approximately 1 in 5 women experience depression during or after pregnancy, and up to 1 in 4 encounter difficulties in establishing an emotional bond with their infants - a condition known as mother-to-infant bonding difficulties (MIBD). Pooled global estimates from meta-analyses indicate that these conditions are more prevalent than major obstetric complications such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. They also represent the leading cause of

Brain-heart coupling in response to imminent threat in panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Imminent threat does not only capture attention but also triggers defensive psychophysiological responses associated with fight-flight-freeze behavior. However, within-subject associations between central markers of attentional stimulus processing and peripheral components of early defensive activation (e.g., cardiac acceleration) are not well understood. These associations may be especially important in understanding dynamics of anxiety disorders that are characterized by cardiovascular symptoms such as panic disorder. METHODS: We analyzed data from N = 90 participants with panic

Exploring Moderators and Mediators of the Outcome of Group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Compared With Group Schema Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder and Comorbid Avoidant Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Identifying moderators and mediators in a randomised controlled trial is important to improve treatment effectiveness and elucidate mechanisms of change. Putative moderating and mediating variables of treatment outcome of 30 weekly sessions of group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) and group schema therapy (GST) were investigated in a sample of 154 patients with both social anxiety disorder (SAD) and avoidant personality disorder (AVPD). Significant improvements were realised in both modalities at 3 and 12 months after treatment. No significant differences between conditions we

Dignity of Work and at Work: The Relationship between Workplace Dignity and Health among Latino Immigrants during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Latino immigrants living in the United States were highly vulnerable to the health and economic consequences brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We use the conceptual framing of workplace dignity, worth that is acknowledged based on performance of job responsibilities, to explore Latino immigrants' experiences during the early months of the pandemic. A qualitative study was conducted with La Clínica del Pueblo (La Clínica), a community health center serving low-income Latino immigrants. From June to December 2020, we conducted in-depth video interviews with 29 Latino immigrant clients to expl

Postpartum scarcity-adversity inflicts sex-specific cerebellar adaptations and reward behaviors in adolescence.

Early life adversity in the form of poor postnatal care is a major developmental stressor impacting behavior later in life. Previous studies have shown the impact of early life stress on neurobehavioral abnormalities. Specifically, research has demonstrated how limited bedding and nesting (LBN) materials can cause behavioral deficits in adulthood. There is, however, a limited understanding of how LBN influences sex-specific neurobehavioral adaptation in adolescence, a developmental stage susceptible to psychiatric diseases including substance use disorder. LBN and stress-naive c57BL/6 adolesce

Lived experience of medical management in recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis: a qualitative study of an uncertain journey.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is experienced by up to 10% of pre-menopausal women globally, yet there is limited research exploring the perspective of women living with this challenging condition. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with Australian women experiencing RVVC were conducted between April-July 2021. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, and qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was conducted. RESULTS: Ten RVVC patients were interviewed. IPA revealed an uncertain journey living with RVVC for all participants ranging from initial symptom

Early life stress exposure worsens adult remote microglia activation, neuronal death, and functional recovery after focal brain injury.

Trauma to the central nervous system (CNS) is a devastating condition resulting in severe functional impairments that strongly vary among patients. Patients' features, such as age, social and cultural environment, and pre-existing psychiatric conditions may be particularly relevant for determining prognosis after CNS trauma. Although several studies demonstrated the impact of adult psycho-social stress exposure on functional recovery after CNS damage, no data exist regarding the long-term effects of the exposure to such experience at an early age. Here, we assessed whether early life stress (E

Disease course, stress, attachment, and mentalization in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic intestinal disorders that requires lifelong treatments. IBD are associated with perceived stress, poor quality of life, and psychopathological disorders. Previous studies have documented that psychological distress and depression are risk factors for IBD. On the other hand, IBD itself might be a source of psychological stress. IBD negatively affect individuals' daily social interactions and close interpersonal relationships. Despite IBD's detrimental effects on quality of life, patients' adherence t

Stem Cell Therapy Offers a Possible Safe and Promising Alternative Approach for Treating Vitiligo: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Normal skin pigmentation pattern is an extremely important component of the appearance of a person, as it can be a significant factor in the social context of any person. A condition known as vitiligo is caused by the death of melanocytes leading to pigmentation loss in the skin. This affects all races across the globe and sometimes leads to social avoidance as in some communities, it is stigmatized. Although there are different pathobiological processes suspected because of the different underlying causes of vitiligo, autoimmunity and oxidative stress are suspected to be the most

Cognitive behavioral social rhythm group therapy versus present centered group therapy for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder: A randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behavioral Social Rhythm Group Therapy (CBSRT) is a chronobiologically-informed group therapy designed to stabilize social rhythms in veterans with comorbid combat-related PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD). This randomized controlled pilot trial is the first to examine feasibility and preliminary efficacy of group CBSRT as compared to group Present Centered Therapy (PCT), a well-characterized active attention, psychotherapy condition. METHODS: A total of 43 male veterans with combat-related PTSD, MDD, and disruptions in sleep or daily routine were randomly assigne

Influence of gender norms in relation to child's quality of care: follow-up of families of children with SCD identified through NBS in Tanzania.

Introducing newborn screening (NBS) services for sickle cell disease (SCD) in Africa has been proven to be one of the most cost-effective approach to reducing morbidity and mortality associated with this condition. In view of this evidence, efforts have been made by countries in Africa where SCD prevalence is high to pilot NBS programmes and to strengthen comprehensive care services for SCD. While it is important to reap the benefits of NBS for SCD in Africa in terms of overall quantitative measures, it is also important to understand how certain social and cultural conditions may disproportio

Maternal antioxidant treatment prevents the adverse effects of prenatal stress on the offspring's brain and behavior.

Maternal exposure to stress during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders in the offspring in later life. The mechanisms through which the effects of maternal stress are transmitted to the fetus are unclear, however the placenta, as the interface between mother and fetus, is likely to play a key role. Using a rat model, we investigated a role for placental oxidative stress in conveying the effects of maternal social stress to the fetus and the potential for treatment using a nanoparticle-bound antioxidant to prevent adverse outcomes in the offspring. Maternal p

The role of predisposition to hallucinations on non-clinical paranoid vs. socially anxious individuals after hearing negative affective-laden sounds: an experimental investigation.

BACKGROUND: Research suggested that negative affective-laden sounds act as environmental stressors that elicit negative affect (Bradley and Lang, 2000a). AIMS: We tried to test for the role of an interaction between predisposition to hallucinatory experiences and exposure to negative affective laden sounds for the presence of paranoid ideation. METHOD: We used an experimental design that followed the vulnerability × stress model. We defined three groups from a sample of students: paranoia group vs. social anxiety group vs. control group. Their psychological characteristics were measured thro

Transsexualism and physical deformity.

This is the first published case study of a transsexual male with a rare orthopedic condition whose transsexualism was directly related to his severe orthopedic disability. In 1976, the patient, a 28-year-old single Caucasian male with a college education, was diagnosed as having progressive pseudorheumatoid arthrotropy of children (a very rare orthopedic disorder which also affected his sister). At this writing, he is 4 feet 9 inches tall and has multiple skeletal deformities, including twisted and gnarled joints; he wears braces on both legs, has had total hip replacements, is barrel chested

Biomarkers and Social Determinants in Atherosclerotic Arterial Diseases: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Arterial diseases like coronary artery disease (CAD), carotid stenosis (CS), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) have high morbidity and mortality, making them key research areas. Their multifactorial nature complicates patient treatment and prevention. Biomarkers offer insights into the biochemical and molecular processes, while social factors also significantly impact patients' health and quality of life. This scoping review aims to search the literature for studies that have linked the biological mechanisms of arterial diseases through biomarkers

Sharing clinical decisions for multimorbidity case management using social network and open-source tools.

INTRODUCTION: Social networks applied through Web 2.0 tools have gained importance in health domain, because they produce improvements on the communication and coordination capabilities among health professionals. This is highly relevant for multimorbidity patients care because there is a large number of health professionals in charge of patient care, and this requires to obtain clinical consensus in their decisions. Our objective is to develop a tool for collaborative work among health professionals for multimorbidity patient care. We describe the architecture to incorporate decision support

A neural network for intermale aggression to establish social hierarchy.

Intermale aggression is used to establish social rank. Several neuronal populations have been implicated in aggression, but the circuit mechanisms that shape this innate behavior and coordinate its different components (including attack execution and reward) remain elusive. We show that dopamine transporter-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic ventral premammillary nucleus (PMvDAT neurons) organize goal-oriented aggression in male mice. Activation of PMvDAT neurons triggers attack behavior; silencing these neurons interrupts attacks. Regenerative PMvDAT membrane conductances interacting with

Adolescent social isolation increases cocaine seeking in male and female mice.

Childhood and adolescent adversity are associated with a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including an increased risk for substance abuse. Despite this, the mechanisms underlying the ability of chronic stress during adolescence to alter reward signaling remains largely unexplored. Understanding how adolescent stress increases addiction-like phenotypes could inform the development of targeted interventions both before and after drug use. The current study examined how prolonged isolation stress, beginning during adolescence, affected behavioral and neuronal underpinnings to the response to
