Network Research Experiences in New York and Eastern Europe: Lessons for the Southern US in Understanding HIV Transmission Dynamics.

PURPOSE: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of risk and social network methods and the kinds of research questions each can address. RECENT FINDINGS: It also reviews what network research has discovered about how network characteristics are associated with HIV and other infections, risk behaviors, preventive behaviors, and care, and discusses some ways in which network-based public health interventions have been conducted. Based on this, risk and social network research and interventions seem both feasible and valuable for addressing the many public health and social problems

Family Group Conferencing as a Catalyst for Recovery and Ownership in Mental Health.

BACKGROUND: Recovery is a journey not only of personal change but also of social reengagement. It underlines the essence of social environments that are supportive to the recovery of people with ongoing mental health issues. The process of recovery also affects other actors, and likewise these actors exert their influence on the recovery of their family member or friend. OBJECTIVE: Since 2009, we have been studying whether the decision-making model called family group conferencing (FGC) helps mental health clients increase their self-reliance. The essence of FGC is that individuals who experi

Beyond the ACE score: Examining relationships between timing of developmental adversity, relational health and developmental outcomes in children.

BACKGROUND: The association between developmental adversity and children's functioning is complex, particularly given the multifaceted nature of adverse experiences. The association between the timing of experience and outcomes is underresearched and clinically under-appreciated. We examine how the timing of both adverse (including potentially traumatic) events and relational poverty are associated with developmental outcomes. METHOD: Clinicians using the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), an approach to clinical problem solving, reported on the timing of children's developmental ex

Factors associated with health service utilisation for common mental disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a large treatment gap for common mental disorders (CMD), with wide variation by world region. This review identifies factors associated with formal health service utilisation for CMD in the general adult population, and compares evidence from high-income countries (HIC) with that from low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Scopus in May 2016. Eligibility criteria were: published in English, in peer-reviewed journals; using population-based samples; employing standardised CMD measures; measuring use of formal health servi

Availability of comprehensive services in permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles.

Studies have often described a specific model or models of permanent supportive housing (PSH), yet few studies have systematically examined what services are typically offered to PSH tenants in any given service system and how those services are offered. Using telephone surveys from 23 PSH agency supervisors and qualitative data collected from 11 focus groups with 60 frontline providers and 17 individual interviews with supervisors from a subset of surveyed agencies-all of which were completed between July 2014 and December 2015-the goal of this study is to better understand what services are

Befriending to Relieve Anxiety and Depression Associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A Case Report.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease characterized by airflow obstruction and shortness of breath, which as a result can severely limit activities of daily living. COPD sufferers are 85% more likely to develop anxiety disorders than healthy matched controls. Some of the factors that have been suggested to be associated with high anxiety in people with COPD include dyspnoea, the inability to perform daily activities or fulfil social roles, rehospitalisation and some COPD treatments. There is substantial evidence that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is effecti

The relationship between women's experiences of mistreatment at facilities during childbirth, types of support received and person providing the support in Lucknow, India.

BACKGROUND: a growing body of literature has highlighted the prevalence of mistreatment that women experience around the globe during childbirth, including verbal and physical abuse, neglect, lack of support, and disrespect. Much of this has been qualitative. Research around the world suggests that support during childbirth can improve health outcomes and behaviours, and improve experiences. Support can be instrumental, informational, or emotional, and can be provided by a variety of people including family (husbands, mothers) or health providers of various professional levels. This study expl

Ecological Covariates of Subtle and Blatant Heterosexist Discrimination Among LGBQ College Students.

Sexual minority college students report experiencing interpersonal heterosexism, ranging from subtle insults to blatant physical violence. Such negative experiences can complicate developmental tasks common to adolescence and emerging adulthood. Studies examining the nature of heterosexism on college campuses have focused on blatant manifestations, yet subtle forms are more prevalent. Guided by ecological theory, we investigate the microsystem (e.g., perceived social support from friends, ambient heterosexism on campus), mesosystem (e.g., interaction between social support and ambient heterose…

The relation between living alone and depressive symptoms in older Korean Americans: do feelings of loneliness mediate?

OBJECTIVES: As the opposite end of the continuum from social integration, social isolation may put individuals at a greater risk of poor mental health. Conceptualizing living alone as an objective and structural indicator of social isolation and loneliness as subjective perceptions of social isolation, the present study hypothesized that the relation between living alone and depressive symptoms would be mediated by the feelings of loneliness. Using older Korean Americans as the target population, the mediation model was examined in consideration of the contextual factors such as demographics (

Social and clinical correlates of the persistence of psychotic experiences in the general population.

Recent epidemiological evidence suggests that sub-threshold psychotic experiences commonly occur in the general population. When these experiences persist over time, they may increase risk for psychotic disorder or lead to other clinical or functional impairments. The aims of this study were to distinguish the relative importance of sociodemographic factors and clinical factors, including characteristics of the psychotic experiences themselves, in determining the course of psychotic symptoms over time. Participants were drawn from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys. We tested f
