Effect of different organic materials on maize at different concentrations of lead.

The present study has been undertaken to know the effect of concentrations of lead (Pb) and different organic materials on the maize yield, concentrations of lead on maize plants and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) extractable lead (Pb) on the post harvested soils. The results revealed that growth of maize increased by adding lead (Pb) upto 25 mg kg(-1) soil and thereafter the growth decreased. Application of organic matter increased the growth of maize in Pb-contaminated soil. With the increase in Pb concentration in soil, the concentration of Pb in plants also increased, however…

Contrasted tolerance of Agrostis capillaris metallicolous and non-metallicolous ecotypes in the context of a mining technosol amended by biochar, compost and iron sulfate.

Metal(loid) contamination of soil, resulting from the mining activities, is a major issue worldwide, due to its negative effects on the environment and health. Therefore, these contaminated soils need to be remediated. One realistic method is the assisted phytostabilization, which aims at establishing a vegetation cover on the soil that will reduce metal(loid) bioavailability and spreading through the prevention of wind erosion and water leaching. In addition, amendments are applied to improve soil conditions and ameliorate plant growth. In this goal, biochar and compost showed good results in…

Solubilization of insoluble zinc compounds by zinc solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) and optimization of their growth conditions.

In this research, the optimum growth conditions for two zinc solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) have been studied for their potential application as bioinoculants to overcome Zn unavailability in soils. For this purpose, a laboratory-scale experiment was carried out to evaluate the zinc solubilizing ability of 80 plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains isolated from the rhizosphere of barley and tomato plants. To select effective ZSB, isolates were evaluated on Tris-mineral medium supplemented separately with zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, and zinc phosphate at a concentration of 0.1%. Two strain…

Multivariate edaphic gradients are associated with phytochemical quality variation in Atractylodes chinensis across northern China.

Environmental heterogeneity is widely invoked to explain geographic variation in medicinal plant quality. However, inference based on numerous intercorrelated soil variables can be unstable when individual correlations are interpreted separately. In this study, 42 rhizome-soil paired samples of Atractylodes chinensis were purposively selected across northern China to capture phytochemical variation and associated environmental data. The dataset included 32 cultivated samples and 10 wild reference samples; within Liaoning Province, the sampling set contained 25 cultivated samples and seven wild…

Enrichment of Lysobacter in a long-term organically managed agricultural field with low soilborne disease incidence.

Disease-suppressive soils, in which soilborne pathogens are naturally suppressed, offer a promising model for sustainable crop protection, particularly in organic farming systems where chemical disease control options are limited. Although disease suppression in these soils is considered to rely on biological control, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated soil from a long-term organically managed field in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where soilborne disease incidence has remained consistently low, to identify bacterial community features potentially ass…

Rill erosion dynamics in smallholder farming systems of wet tropical Africa.

Tropical Africa is globally one of the most sensitive regions to accelerated soil erosion, and much of its cropland is characterised by a substantial yield gap. In particular, the White Nile-Congo ridge (NiCo) region of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and Uganda is a hotspot for issues relating to food security driven by soil degradation due to steep terrain, highly erosive rainfall and low soil cover. Most soil erosion studies in the region are based on plot or large-scale modelling. Both approaches lack information on inter-field connectivity processes, which are espe…

Microbial strategies for phosphorus acquisition in rice paddies under contrasting water regimes: Multiple source tracing by 32P and 33P.

Microbial acquisition and utilization of organic and mineral phosphorus (P) sources in paddy soils are strongly dependent on redox environment and remain the key to understand P turnover and allocation for cell compound synthesis. Using double 32/33P labeling, we traced the P from three sources in a P-limited paddy soil: ferric iron-bound phosphate (Fe-P), wheat straw P (Straw-P), and soil P (Soil-P) in microbial biomass P (MBP) and phospholipids (Phospholipid-P) of individual microbial groups depending on water regimes: (i) continuous flooding or (ii) alternate wetting and drying. 32/33P labe…

Effects of polyurethane microplastics combined with cadmium on maize growth and cadmium accumulation under different long-term fertilisation histories.

Agricultural production uses different types of fertilisation treatments, typically employing the combined application of organic fertiliser (OF) or organic-inorganic fertiliser (OIF) to improve soil quality. When coupled with cadmium (Cd), microplastics (MPs) affect plant growth and Cd accumulation in soils treated with different fertilisers. This study systematically examined the effects of polyurethane (PU) MPs coupled with Cd on the growth characteristics, root metabolite characteristics, rhizosphere bacterial community structure, and Cd bioavailability of maize under different long-term f…

Factors that influence the migration of sorbed pesticides in polyethylene and biodegradable mesoplastics.

Trifluralin, Chlorpyrifos, and Procymidone migration performance from polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable (Mater-Bi: M-B) mulching films was examined. Desorption of pesticides from PE and M-B was studied using soil-plastic microcosms, considering temperature, soil humidity, and mulching film type as experimental variables. Trifluralin and Chlorpyrifos desorption was higher for PE than for M-B under all experimental conditions. In both cases, as the temperature increased from 25 °C to 40 °C, pesticide migration also increased, whereas as the soil humidity raised from 30% to 60%, pesticide desor…

Surface-air mercury fluxes across Western North America: A synthesis of spatial trends and controlling variables.

Mercury (Hg) emission and deposition can occur to and from soils, and are an important component of the global atmospheric Hg budget. This paper focuses on synthesizing existing surface-air Hg flux data collected throughout the Western North American region and is part of a series of geographically focused Hg synthesis projects. A database of existing Hg flux data collected using the dynamic flux chamber (DFC) approach from almost a thousand locations was created for the Western North America region. Statistical analysis was performed on the data to identify the important variables controlling…

Proteomic Responses of the Springtail Folsomia candida to Drought.

Springtails are adapted to life in the pore space of soil, where humidity in moist soil is close to saturation. Drought is the most important limiting factor for springtails; however, their molecular and physiological adaptations to low humidity are not well understood. The present study explored the global proteomic drought response of the springtail, Folsomia candida (Isotomidae, Collembola). In relatively dry soil (-360 kPa), adult springtails initially lost body water but re-established the normal body water content over the following two weeks. Nano LC-MS/MS analysis identified a total of…

Chemical fumigants control apple replant disease: Microbial community structure-mediated inhibition of Fusarium and degradation of phenolic acids.

Fusarium and phenolic acids in apple replant soil have deleterious effects on soil, which affects the growth of young replanted apple trees. Here, we studied the effects of different chemical fumigants (metham sodium, dazomet, calcium cyanamide, 1,3-dichloropropene, and methyl bromide) on Fusarium and phenolic acids in soil. The chemical fumigants disturbed the apple replant soil microbial community to different degrees in the order from highest to the lowest as methyl bromide > 1,3-dichloropropene > dazomet > metham sodium > calcium cyanamide. Compared with the control, the total numbers of O…

Vegetative propagation capacity of invasive alligator weed through small stolon fragments under different treatments.

The ability to propagate via small diaspores is crucial for the invasion of a clone plant that does not reproduce sexually in its introduced range. We investigated the effects of node and internode adjacent mode, fragment type, burial orientation and position of the node in relation to the soil surface on the sprouting and growth of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Martius) Griseb.). All the factors had effects and interaction effects on the sprouting rate and growth. As a whole fragment in all treatments, the fragments with basal node buried upward on the soil surface, exhibited t…
