Oral Mucositis and Nutritional Status in Children Who Underwent Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: A Comparison Between Nonmalignant and Malignant Primary Diseases.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies analyzing the association between oral mucositis (OM) and nutritional imbalance in children during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The aim of this study was to compare the risk factors for OM and nutritional imbalance during HSCT in pediatric patients with nonmalignant diseases (NMD) and malignant diseases (MD). METHODS: Data on age, sex, primary disease, transplantation type, conditioning regimen, GVHD prophylaxis, gastrointestinal toxicity, OM, percent body weight loss or gain, nutritional repositioning, and overall survival (OS) were r

The effect of the use of thyme honey in minimizing radiation - induced oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced oral mucositis is one of the main side effects during and after the treatment of head and neck cancer patients. The study was designed to provide evidence on the effectiveness of thyme honey on oral mucositis management. METHODS: This was a randomised controlled trial (RCT) with 72 head and neck cancer patients who were divided either to the intervention group (thyme honey rinses) or to the control group (saline rinses). Oral mucositis was assessed according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOC criteria), and assessments were performed weekly starting at th

Primary Oral Mucormycosis Due to Rhizopus microsporus after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation.

We herein report a rare case of oral mucormycosis following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Oral mucormycosis due to Rhizopus microsporus manifested as localized left buccal mucositis with a 1-cm black focus before neutrophil recovery. Combination therapy with liposomal amphotericin B was initiated and surgical debridement was performed; however, the patient died due to progressive generalized mucormycosis. Considerable attention needs to be paid to the diagnosis and management of oral mucormycosis in post-transplant patients, thereby suggesting the importance of fully unde

Protective effects of systemic dermatan sulfate treatment in a preclinical model of radiation-induced oral mucositis.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a frequent, dose-limiting side effect of radio(chemo)therapy of head-and-neck malignancies. The epithelial radiation response is based on multiple tissue changes, which could offer targets for a biologically tailored treatment. The potential of dermatan sulfate (DS) to modulate radiation-induced oral mucositis was tested in an established preclinical mucositis model. METHODS: Irradiation was either applied alone or in combination with daily DS treatment (4 mg/kg, subcutaneously) over varying time intervals. Irradiation comprised single dose irradiation with graded d

Is History of Periodontitis a Risk Factor for Peri-implant Disease? A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate clinical outcomes of implant treatment in periodontally compromised patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Partially edentulous patients who were diagnosed and treated for chronic periodontitis and later rehabilitated with implant-supported single crowns or fixed partial dentures were enrolled in this study. At the final follow-up, data on probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing were collected, and changes in peri-implant bone levels were assessed on periapical radiographs. Accordingly, patients were categorized into peri-implant disease-fre

[Pyostomatitis vegetans. Numerous pale yellow dots on inflammatory red ground - A case report.].

Pyostomatitis vegetans is a disease of the gingiva and the oral mucosa with noticeable, uncommon morphology. Clinical characteristics of this rare disease and considerations regarding differential diagnosis are described. Pyostomatitis vegetans is frequently associated with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and can, thus, give a diagnostic hint at an existing ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. A therapy plan for pyostomatitis vegetans is presented, which led to remission using local treatment only. The follow-up examination after one year showed that the treatment outcome had remained st…

8-prenylnaringenin and tamoxifen inhibit the shedding of irradiated epithelial cells and increase the latency period of radiation-induced oral mucositis : cell culture and murine model.

PURPOSE: The major component in the pathogenesis of oral radiation-induced mucositis is progressive epithelial hypoplasia and eventual ulceration. Irradiation inhibits cell proliferation, while cell loss at the surface continues. We conceived to slow down this desquamation by increasing intercellular adhesion, regulated by the E-cadherin/catenin complex. We investigated if 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN) or tamoxifen (TAM) decrease the shedding of irradiated human buccal epithelial cells in vitro and thus delay the ulcerative phase of radiation-induced mucositis in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In v

Risk factors for oral mucositis in children receiving hematopoietic cell transplantation for primary immunodeficiencies: a retrospective study.

OM is a frequent complication for patients undergoing HSCT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible risk factors for OM in children undergoing HSCT for PI. A retrospective study was carried out on 55 consecutive medical records of patients with PI (including osteopetrosis) who underwent HSCT. Age at the time of HSCT, gender, diagnosis, type of donor, conditioning regimen, engraftment, graft-versus-host disease, and severity and duration of OM were collected at the beginning of the conditioning until day 100 post-HSCT or death. OM was measured using the WHO scale. Patients' age range

An in situ gelling buccal spray containing platelet lysate for the treatment of oral mucositis.

Oral mucositis is an inflammatory disease of the mucosa lining oral cavity which leads to atrophy of the epithelium and to its ulceration to form chronic lesions. Many studies, both in vitro and in vivo, have disclosed the effectiveness of growth factors derived from platelets to enhance cell proliferation, differentiation, chemotaxis, angiogenesis and extracellular matrix synthesis involved in the healing of tissues. Despite potential usefulness of growth factors, animal-derived or genetically engineered ones are currently scarcely available for regenerative therapies. The aim of the present

[Injury and reparative regeneration of the oral mucosal epithelium after cytostatic drugs administration (tissue, cell and molecular mechanisms)].

This paper presents the systematized summary of current literature data and the authors' own findings on the regularities of human and animal surface oral mucosal epithelium (OME) injury caused by cytostatic drugs (CSD) administration, and on the ways of its regeneration after the cytostatic chemotherapy (CSCT) discontinuation. Tissue, cell and molecular mechanisms of CSCT effects on OME, are described. The direct effects of CSD included the epithelial layer attenuation with the derangement of its architecture, epitheliocyte proliferation suppression, apoptosis activation, and differentiation

Strategies for managing radiation-induced mucositis in head and neck cancer.

Radiation-induced mucositis (RIM) is a common toxicity for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. The frequency has increased because of the use of more intensive altered radiation fractionation and concurrent chemotherapy regimens. The extent of the injury is directly related to the mucosal volume irradiated, anatomic subsite exposed, treatment intensity, and individual patient predisposition. The consequences of mucositis include pain, dysphagia including feeding tube dependency, dehydration, micronutrient deficiencies, weight loss, and potentially life-threatening aspiration. Currently, there

Management of erythema multiforme associated with recurrent herpes infection: a case report.

Erythema multiforme is an acute mucocutaneous disorder, characterized by varying degrees of blistering and ulceration. We report a case of recurrent herpes-associated erythema multiforme managed with prophylactic acyclovir. An 11-year-old boy had lesions in the oral cavity and lips, which had been diagnosed as erythema multiforme minor. Four months later, the patient had desquamative gingivitis with erythematous lesions and necrotic areas in the skin. This episode was not related to drug intake, which suggests that the erythema multiforme was a result of herpetic infection. This hypothesis was
