The role of interferon signaling in neurodegeneration and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Recent advances in transcriptomics research have uncovered heightened interferon (IFN) responses in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, primary tauopathy, Parkinson's disease, TDP-43 proteinopathy, and related mouse models. Augmented IFN signaling is now relatively well established for microglia in these contexts, but emerging work has highlighted a novel role for IFN-responsive T cells in the brain and peripheral blood in some types of neurodegeneration. These findings complement a body of literature implicating dysregulated IFN signaling in neuropsychiatric disorders in

The Study of Eating Disorders from a Network Perspective: A Scoping Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a comprehensive scoping review of network research in the field of eating disorders (EDs). METHOD: Research published between 2016 and 2021 was identified. We identified 61 manuscripts. RESULTS: We found that overvaluation of weight and shape, cognitive concerns around body image, cognitive-affective ED symptoms, and restriction/restraint are core to EDs, in both ED and non-ED samples. Several general psychopathology symptoms are also core to EDs, including affective symptoms, interpersonal problems, feelings of inadequacy, interoceptive awareness, and post-traumatic

Hallucinogens in Mental Health: Preclinical and Clinical Studies on LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, and Ketamine.

A revamped interest in the study of hallucinogens has recently emerged, especially with regard to their potential application in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. In the last decade, a plethora of preclinical and clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy of ketamine in the treatment of depression. More recently, emerging evidence has pointed out the potential therapeutic properties of psilocybin and LSD, as well as their ability to modulate functional brain connectivity. Moreover, MDMA, a compound belonging to the family of entactogens, has been demonstrated to be useful to treat post

Molecular psychiatry of zebrafish.

Due to their well-characterized neural development and high genetic homology to mammals, zebrafish (Danio rerio) have emerged as a powerful model organism in the field of biological psychiatry. Here, we discuss the molecular psychiatry of zebrafish, and its implications for translational neuroscience research and modeling central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In particular, we outline recent genetic and technological developments allowing for in vivo examinations, high-throughput screening and whole-brain analyses in larval and adult zebrafish. We also summarize the application of these mole

Fear learning and memory across adolescent development: Hormones and Behavior Special Issue: Puberty and Adolescence.

Throughout the past several decades, studies have uncovered a wealth of information about the neural circuitry underlying fear learning and extinction that has helped to inform treatments for fear-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress and anxiety. Yet, up to 40% of people do not respond to such treatments. Adolescence, in particular, is a developmental stage during which anxiety disorders peak, yet little is known about the development of fear-related neural circuitry during this period. Moreover, pharmacological and behavioral therapies that have been developed are based on mature c

Abnormal eating behaviors in adolescent and young adult women from southern Brazil: reassessment after four years.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether abnormal eating behaviors in young women could predict eating disorders after 4 years. METHOD: 56 women were identified as presenting abnormal eating behaviors in a cross-sectional study (Eating Attitudes Test-26 and Edinburgh Bulimic Investigation Test). They were matched for age and neighborhood to two controls (n = 112). Four years later, they were re-assessed with the two screening questionnaires plus the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 2.1). RESULTS: Women with abnormal eating behaviors at baseline showed a high probability of present

[Posttraumatic stress disorder, dissociation and self-destructive behavior in borderline patients].

We studied traumatic childhood experiences, comorbid posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD), dissociation and self-destructive behavior in 30 inpatients with a borderline personality disorder. A standardized interview for the assessment of PTSD, the Dissociative Experience Scale and the Symptom-checklist were administered. Results were compared to a control of inpatients with neurotic disorders matched for gender and age. Borderline patients showed significantly more childhood sexual and physical abuse as well as emotional neglect than the control patients. Of the borderline patients, 67% met c

Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Following Cesarean Section-the Mediating Effect of Sense of Control.

Our aim is to clarify the differences in post-traumatic symptom levels between women who had emergency cesarean sections (C-sections) and women who had elective ones and investigate the function of sense of control in post-traumatic symptoms development. On the fourth day after the C-section, participants were recruited and completed a demographic and background questionnaire. Six to eight weeks later, they received continuation questionnaires. A total of 161 women who underwent Cesarean-sections participated in the study's final sample. Women above the age of 18, who gave birth by elective or

Deployment, suicide, and overdose among comorbidity phenotypes following mild traumatic brain injury: A retrospective cohort study from the Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium.

Mild traumatic brain injury in the Veteran population is frequently comorbid with pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and/or depression. However, not everyone exposed to mild traumatic brain injury experiences these comorbidities and it is unclear what factors contribute to this variability. The objective of this study was to identify comorbidity phenotypes among Post-9/11 deployed Veterans with no or mild traumatic brain injury and examine the association of comorbidity phenotypes with adverse outcomes. We found that Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (n = 93,003) and no brain injury

Self-Reported Mental and Physical Health Symptoms and Potentially Traumatic Events Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Individuals: The Role of Shame.

OBJECTIVE: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals disproportionately face exposure to potentially traumatic events-adverse experiences that may have a traumatizing effect-and experience shame as a common consequence. Previous research demonstrates associations between shame and psychological and physical health issues among those with exposure to potentially traumatic events in general, with limited attention among LGBTQ individuals specifically. This study determined whether shame partially mediated the relationship between potentially traumatic events exposure and

Construct validity of the childbirth trauma index for adolescents.

The potentially traumatic nature of childbirth for adult mothers has been confirmed in research; however, adolescent childbirth trauma is unexplored. This article presents research on the construct validity of the Childbirth Trauma Index by providing a conceptual analysis of psychological childbirth trauma, factor validity of the Childbirth Trauma Index, and discussion of testing the Childbirth Trauma Index via contrasted-groups approach. Childbirth trauma can result in an acute stress reaction or actual posttraumatic stress disorder. Using subjective reports, the Impact of Event Scale, and th

[Reactive anxiety crisis and chronic adjustment disorder: a unique case of work injury and suspected occupational disease].

The present study aims to describe a case of work injury and occupational disease which is unique for the type of disease diagnosed, conditions of onset and mode of management by INAIL (Italian National Institute of Insurance for Injuries at Work and Occupational Diseases). A worker, after a verbal animated dispute with some collegues and superiors, had an acute psychiatric agitation attack and went to the nearest emergency room, where he was subjected to clinical exams. No neuropsychiatric alteration was found, but the physicians diagnosed an anxiety crisis reactive to the work environment. C

Low emotional contagious behavior induces PTSD susceptibility in observers and is related to the regulation of oxytocin receptor in mice.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious psychiatric disorder that occurs after an individual has witnessed or experienced a major traumatic event. Emotional contagion seems to play an important role in witnessing trauma, highlighting the importance of understanding the neurobiological consequences of psychological or emotional stress and its impact on the individual's mental health. Therefore, understanding the relationship between emotional contagion and PTSD susceptibility and the abnormal neurobiological and behavioral changes behind it could help find effective molec

Relational and Growth Outcomes Following Couples Therapy With MDMA for PTSD.

Healing from trauma occurs in a relational context, and the impacts of traumatic experiences that result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) go beyond the diagnosis itself. To fully understand a treatment for PTSD, understanding its impact on interpersonal, relational, and growth outcomes yields a more fulsome picture of the effects of the treatment. The current paper examines these secondary outcomes of a pilot trial of Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) for PTSD with MDMA. Six romantic dyads, where one partner had PTSD, undertook a course of treatment combining CBCT for PTSD w

Gastrin-releasing peptide is essential for generalization of auditory conditioned fear under stress.

Fear generalization, which allows animals to respond adaptively to cues similar to original threatening ones, is generally beneficial for survival. However, an inability to distinguish between threat and safety, leading to the overgeneralization of fear to non-threatening stimuli, is maladaptive and is implicated in anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The neuropeptide gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) is known to modulate fear memory under stress, yet its role in response to intense aversive stimuli remains less understood. In this study, we used GRP knockout (Grp-/-

Neurotensin and Neurotensin Receptors in Stress-related Disorders: Pathophysiology & Novel Drug Targets.

Neurotensin (NT) is a 13-amino acid neuropeptide widely distributed in the CNS that has been involved in the pathophysiology of many neural and psychiatric disorders. There are three known neurotensin receptors (NTSRs), which mediate multiple actions, and form the neurotensinergic system in conjunction with NT. NTSR1 is the main mediator of NT, displaying effects in both the CNS and the periphery, while NTSR2 is mainly expressed in the brain and NTSR3 has a broader expression pattern. In this review, we bring together up-to-date studies showing an involvement of the neurotensinergic system in

Borderline personality disorder: Challenges in an inpatient setting.

ObjectiveBorderline Personality Disorder (BPD) remains one of the most challenging conditions encountered in inpatient psychiatry, particularly in regional settings where access to specialised psychological care is limited. Drawing on the personal experience of a public psychiatric specialist practicing in regional Australia, this piece reflects on diagnostic dilemmas, therapeutic boundaries, and the emergence of other challenges unique to the treatment of BPD. A large part of diagnostic complexity in BPD often arises from overlapping symptomatology of differential diagnoses such as Bipolar di
