Suspected complex partial seizure disorder, eating disorders, and drug abuse disorders were overrepresented among the 40% (N = 16) of female borderline inpatients who reported a history of sexual abuse. Early family disruption, more frequent hospital admissions, and concomitant antisocial personality disorder were overrepresented among those who reported past physical abuse.

Many difficult and complex behavioral and psychiatric problems can occur in a methadone treatment program. Some behavioral problems are very serious, and it is essential that the program place a high priority on controlling them. This is best done by structuring the treatment milieu via program rules. Careful attention must be paid to consistent, fair, and accurate enforcement of these rules. A proper staffing pattern is essential; this should include counselors along with medical, administrative, and pharmacy personnel, and police. Written policies explaining clinic procedures such as treatme

Most mental disorders begin during developmental age. Different misinformation about mental illnesses cause anxiety, create stereotypes and promote stigma. Stigma has been identified as a likely key factor in mental health services access and utilization, particularly under-utilization of existing services especially in children with mental disorders. Stigma is a problem with which parents / carers face child emotional and behavioral problems when they seek professional help. Very often they avoid to seek professional help due to existing stigmatized attitudes leading to lack of treatment. Poo

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a debilitating condition affecting over 30 million Americans. AUD commonly co-occurs with other disorders, like other substance use disorders, trauma-related disorders, and anxiety disorders. Of the numerous co-occurring disorders, anxiety disorders are the most pervasive: anxiety disorders serve as a risk factor for developing AUD, emerge as co-occurring disorders that maintain alcohol drinking, and impede the effectiveness of treatments for AUD. Anxiety, therefore, shapes the development, course, and treatment of AUDs. AUDs can also increase anxiety, suggesting

The circadian rhythm is crucial for physiological and behavioral functions. Chronotype, which represents individual preferences for activity and performance, is associated with human health issues, particularly psychiatric disorders. This narrative review, which focuses on the relationship between chronotype and mental disorders, provides an insight into the potential mechanism. Recent evidence indicates that (1) the evening chronotype is a risk factor for depressive disorders and substance use disorders, whereas the morning chronotype is a protective factor. (2) Evening chronotype individuals

BACKGROUND: Low prevalence of substance-use disorder has been reported in adults with autism. However, on a superficial level, adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) display a 'normal' façade when they drink alcohol, which may explain why their alcohol dependency is not better diagnosed.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report two cases of HFA adults who use alcohol and psychostimulants to cope with their anxiety and improve their cognitive abilities and social skills. We analyze how neurocognitive traits associated with HFA may be potential triggers for substance-use disorder.
CONCLUSION: Bet

The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Axis I disorders in adult inhalant-dependent patients in comparison to other substance-dependent patients and subjects without substance use disorders. The inhalant-dependent group consisted of 83 male inpatient and outpatient adults diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. This group was compared with 74 other substance-dependent patients and with 70 subjects without alcohol and substance use disorder diagnoses. Ninety-three percent of the inhalant dependents had a lifetime history of at least one type of comorbid Axis I disorder, while

Objective - Patients presenting with psychotic or mood disorders present with neuropsychological deficits such as executive and memory disturbance. Deficits of these functions have also been reported in patients presenting with alcohol use or substance use disorders. A large percentage of patients with non-affective psychotic or mood disorders present with a comorbid substance use disorder. These subjects are often a priori excluded from most neuropsychological studies. However, using such an exclusion criterion may induce a selection bias linked to the high prevalence of this dual diagnosis.

This report presents findings on the frequency, comorbidity and psychosocial impairment of social phobia and social fears among 1035 adolescents, aged 12-17 years. The adolescents were randomly selected from 36 schools in the province of Bremen, Germany. Social phobia and other psychiatric disorders were coded based on DSM-IV criteria using the computerized Munich version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Seventeen (1.6%) of the adolescents met the DSM-IV criteria for social phobia sometimes in their life. More girls than boys received the diagnosis of social phobia and the

A number of different indicators of psychopathology were assessed in this study of 76 cocaine and crack abusers who entered outpatient treatment in New York City between June and December 1987. The majority (75%) had used cocaine for 4 years or more, and the majority (62%) spent over one thousand dollars a month on cocaine in the 6 months before entry into treatment. Forty-seven percent of the sample were found to be clinically depressed. Phobic disorders were the only other axis I diagnoses found in addition to depression, and all persons who were found to have phobic disorders also were diag

The differential diagnosis of psychiatric comorbidity in substance abusers is important in order to provide effective pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for the comorbid psychiatric disorders. Differential diagnosis of an underlying psychiatric disorder depends on the type of drug abused and the phase of abuse, ranging from acute intoxication to withdrawal. This review derives guidelines for differential diagnosis based on multiple examples of interactions between major psychiatric disorders and various abused drugs.

BACKGROUND: In a recent randomized controlled trial (Hendriks et al., 2011), multidimensional family therapy (MDFT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were equally effective in reducing cannabis use in adolescents (13-18 years old) with a cannabis use disorder (n=109). In a secondary analysis of the trial data, we investigated which pretreatment patient characteristics differentially predicted treatment effect in MDFT and CBT, in order to generate hypotheses for future patient-treatment matching.
METHODS: The predictive value of twenty patient characteristics, in the area of demographic b

Rationale: In patients with pneumonia requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, alcohol misuse is associated with increased mortality, but the relationship between other commonly misused substances and mortality is unknown. Objectives: We sought to establish whether alcohol misuse, cannabis misuse, opioid misuse, stimulant misuse, or misuse of more than one of these substances was associated with differences in mortality among ICU patients with pneumonia. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of hospitals participating in the Premier Healthcare Database between 2010 and 2017. Pat

Substance misuse is a critical and costly public health problem in the United States. Data as of 2016 show 11,517 cases of opioid analgesic misuse, with the majority (6924 cases) related to hydrocodone misuse. Substance misuse impacts our society significantly with high costs related to healthcare, crime, and lost productivity. Opioid analgesic pain relievers are one of the most prescribed classes of medications and are among the most common drugs related to misuse. Increases in emergency department visits of over 200% have been associated with a dramatic surge in written prescriptions for opi
