Reconstruction of the base of the tongue and lateral pharyngeal wall.

A technique for reconstruction of the lateral pharyngeal wall, with a buccal mucosal rotation flap is presented for use in patients following extensive resections of the lateral pharyngeal wall with partial mandiblectomy. Reconstruction of the base of the tongue, utilizing midline tongue flaps and/or the epiglottis, is also illustrated. These innovative techniques frequently obviate forehead and chest flaps, aid in vocal rehabilitation, and allow single stage resection and reconstruction in nonradiated patients.

Psychiatric observations on patients who seek and undergo hair transplantation.

Requests for cosmetic surgery may mask important psychopathology. Although the majority of patients who seek hair transplantation may not need psychiatric study, the hair-transplant surgeon must be sensitive to and wary of those who seem to have over-determined needs for this service. The expectations, motivation, and sexuality of patients are prime factors that influence satisfaction with the results of hair transplantation.

[Xeroderma pigmentosum. Therapeutic indications on the basis of 3 cases seen recently (author's transl)].

This condition is a genodermatosis, seen chiefly around the shores of the Mediterranean, characterised by early pigment disturbances which progress virtually inexorably towards a diffuse epitheliomatosis which usually results in death before the age of 20 years. Progression of the lesions is precipitated by exposure to UV rays. These lesions are seen essentially in exposed areas, in particular oculopalpebral. Treatment is first preventive (decrease in exposure to sun and protection). Otherwise, surgery remains the most effective method: either excision as required, or extensive cervicofacial p

Craniofacial surgery: the team approach.

Craniofacial surgery offers a new hope to some grossly deformed people. This complex surgery, which is based on a multidisciplinary team approach, needs to be carefully rationalized and regionalized to facilitate investigation, to improve planning, to reduce the number of complications, and to conserve financial resources. To date the Cranio-Facial Clinic at the Adelaide Children's Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital has reviewed 37 cases and operated upon 13 of these. This work is presented together with a review of the team approach.

Otoplasty--an eclectic technique.

The authors report their experience in the surgical treatment of 78 patients with lop, prominent, or protruding ears. Four patients had a unilateral deformity. The procedure used in 110 ears consisted of a cartilage excision-incision and horizontal mattress suture technique. In 42 ears, horizontal mattress sutures only, with or without scoring of cartilage, were used. The complications and unsatisfactory cosmetic results are reported. No major complications such as perichondritis, severe infection or unsightly postoperative deformities occurred. In conclusion, 94,7% of all cases had a good cos
