Dual receptor therapy with pituitrin for spinal cord injury-induced diabetes insipidus: A propensity-matched retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Spinal cord injury (SCI)-induced diabetes insipidus (DI) presents a unique therapeutic challenge due to concurrent autonomic hypotension unresponsive to conventional desmopressin. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of Pituitrin, a synthetic vasopressin analog with dual V1a/V2 receptor agonism, designed to simultaneously address antidiuretic hormone deficiency and hemodynamic instability in acute SCI-related DI. METHODS: In this retrospective propensity-matched cohort study, 317 consecutive acute SCI patients (2010 -2021) were screened, with 60 (18.9%) developing DI. Patients

Current profile of cycling injuries: A retrospective analysis of a trauma centre level 1 in Queensland.

OBJECTIVES: One out of 50 injury-related presentations to an ED is a transport-related cycling injury. Detailed information about the most frequent mechanism of cycling injuries, sustained injuries and patterns are under-reported. The objective of this research was to examine the pattern of injuries sustained by cyclists at a level 1 trauma centre. METHODS: A retrospective review of data of injured cyclists admitted and treated at a level 1 trauma centre between 2011 and 2012 evaluated demographic data, mechanism of injury, injury pattern, economic costs and outcome. RESULTS: Data of 261 pat

Increased excitability and reduced GABAergic levels in somatosensory cortex under chronic spinal cord injury.

The complete or partial damage of ascending somatosensory pathways produced by a spinal cord injury triggers changes in the somatosensory cortex consisting in a functional expansion of activity from intact cortical regions towards deafferented ones, a process known as cortical reorganization. However, it is still unclear whether cortical reorganization depends on the severity of the spinal cord damage or if a spinal cord injury always leads to a similar cortical reorganization process in the somatosensory cortex. To answer these open questions in the field, we obtained longitudinal somatosenso

Methylprednisolone for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Spinal Cord Injuries: A Propensity Score-Matched Cohort Study from a Canadian Multi-Center Spinal Cord Injury Registry.

In prior analyses of the effectiveness of methylprednisolone for the treatment of patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs), the prognostic importance of patients' neurological levels of injury and their baseline severity of impairment has not been considered. Our objective was to determine whether methylprednisolone improved motor recovery among participants in the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry (RHSCIR). We identified RHSCIR participants who received methylprednisolone according to the Second National Spinal Cord Injury Study (NASCIS-II) protocol and used propensity

Effects of vertebral column distraction on transcranial electrical stimulation-motor evoked potential and histology of the spinal cord in a porcine model.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury can occur following surgical procedures for correction of scoliosis and kyphosis, as these procedures produce lengthening of the vertebral column. The objective of this study was to cause spinal cord injury by vertebral column distraction and evaluate the histological changes in the spinal cord in relationship to the pattern of recovery from the spinal cord injury. METHODS: Global osteotomy of all three spinal columns was performed on the ninth thoracic vertebra of sixteen pigs. The osteotomized vertebra was distracted until transcranial electrical stimulation-m

Protocol paper: kainic acid excitotoxicity-induced spinal cord injury paraplegia in Sprague-Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Excitotoxicity-induced in vivo injury models are vital to reflect the pathophysiological features of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) in humans. The duration and concentration of chemical treatment controls the extent of neuronal cell damage. The extent of injury is explained in relation to locomotor and behavioural activity. Several SCI in vivo methods have been reported and studied extensively, particularly contusion, compression, and transection models. These models depict similar pathophysiology to that in humans but are extremely expensive (contusion) and require expertise (comp

High-rise syndrome in cats (part 2): injury patterns and survival rate.

ObjectivesThis two-part study investigates the relationship between risk factors, injury patterns and survival rates in cats affected by high-rise syndrome (HRS). By identifying key prognostic and predictive factors, such as age, fall height and impact surface, we aim to enhance veterinarians' ability to provide accurate prognoses and optimise patient management. In addition, this study seeks to address inconsistencies in the literature by re-evaluating the influence of these factors on injury severity and survival outcomes.MethodsWe analysed medical records and radiographs from 1125 cases of

Serum and Salivary Amylase Variations During Exercise Testing in Athletes and Their Correlation with Cardiovascular Parameters-A Pilot Study.

Background and Objectives: During intense bouts of physical activity, the body of athletes is subjected to stress and sometimes this can lead to adverse events such as injuries or more severe organ dysfunction, like sudden cardiac death. Several markers are being studied to properly assess the level of physical stress that exercises have on the body and one of them is amylase. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 19 licensed football players using basic cardiovascular procedures, i.e., resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and trans-thoracic echocardiography (TTE) and performing a cardiopulmo

A literature review and case report: Traumatic appendicitis in an elderly patient with spinal cord injury and medical comorbidities.

Acute appendicitis is a leading cause of acute abdomen, yet its onset after blunt trauma remains exceedingly rare and diagnostically challenging - particularly in the elderly and in patients with concurrent neurological injuries. We present the case of a 65-year-old woman who developed acute appendicitis following a motor vehicle collision that also caused thoracic spinal fractures with canal involvement. Initially hemodynamically stable with a normal abdominal examination and a negative focused assessment with sonography for trauma, she developed right lower quadrant pain 22 h posttrauma, whi

Injectable conductive chitosan/dextran/polypyrrole hydrogel for cardiac repair with potential application in radiation-induced cardiac injury.

Radiation-induced heart damage (RIHD) remains a prevalent and clinically challenging late complication of thoracic radiotherapy, for which effective minimally invasive restorative interventions remain unavailable. Injectable hydrogels are attractive for myocardial repair because they can be delivered through minimally invasive procedures, undergo in situ gelation, and provide a tunable microenvironment that supports tissue regeneration. In this work, we designed an injectable, thermosensitive, and electrically conductive hydrogel composed of chitosan (CS), dextran (DEX), and polypyrrole (PPy).

Modular eFAST tissue phantom for AI-based ultrasound triage.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is the primary choice for diagnosing and triaging patients in the battlefield as well as emergency medicine due to ease of portability and low-power requirements. Interpretation and acquisition of ultrasound images can be challenging and requires personnel with specialized training. Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance the imaging process while improving diagnostic accuracy. To accomplish this goal, we have developed a full torso tissue-mimicking phantom for simulating US image capture at each site of the extended-focused assessment with sonography for

Methodology to measure seat belt fit in relation to skeletal geometry using an upright open MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Poor seat belt fit can result in submarining behavior and injuries to the lower extremity and abdomen. While previous studies have explored seat belt fit relative to skeletal landmarks using palpation, medical imaging remains the gold standard for visualizing and locating skeletal landmarks and soft tissues. The goal of this study was to create a method to image automotive postures and seat belt fit from the pelvis to the clavicle using an Upright Open MRI. METHODS: The posture and belt fit of 10 volunteers (5M, 5F) were measured in an Acura TLX in each subject's preferred driving

Robotics and minimally invasive esophageal surgery.

The robotic platform has permeated esophageal surgery both in the abdominal and thoracic approaches. The most widely studied entities include achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia and esophageal cancer. A literature review of robotic surgeries for the management of the above mentioned disorders is presented. Data is limited to meta-analyses, case series, or small prospective trials in the different indications. One exception is a randomized controlled trial looking at outcomes in esophageal cancer being managed with a hybrid robotic versus open approach. Overall differences

Delayed aortoesophageal and tracheoesophageal fistulas secondary to foreign body ingestion: a case report.

Ingestion of a foreign body (FB) is a common condition with a few potentially life-threatening complications, including esophageal perforation (EP), aortoesophageal fistula (AEF), mediastinal infection, and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). In this case, a patient who accidentally ingested a duck bone gradually experienced all of the above complications. To resolve the symptom of difficulty swallowing, the patient underwent emergency treatment for removal of the esophageal FB via endoscopic surgery. Under endoscopy, esophageal mucosal injuries were present, but no other abnormalities, such as a
