Beyond the operating room: addressing the "second-victim" phenomenon in surgical practice.

Complications are plausible events during surgical operations. Surgical complications profoundly impact surgeons, often called "second victims" of adverse events. These complications trigger a range of emotional and psychological responses, including guilt, anxiety, heightened empathy, and the looming threat of burnout. Moreover, the toll extends to physical health, with chronic stress and sleep disturbances taking their toll. Surgeons' social lives are not immune to the fallout, and their career satisfaction may wane, pushing some towards defensive medicine practices. While mentorship, counse

Bioinspired Artificial Intelligent Nociceptive Alarm System Based on Fibrous Biomemristors.

With the advancement of modern medical and brain-computer interface devices, flexible artificial nociceptors with tactile perception hold significant scientific importance and exhibit great potential in the fields of wearable electronic devices and biomimetic robots. Here, a bioinspired artificial intelligent nociceptive alarm system integrating sensing monitoring and transmission functions is constructed using a silk fibroin (SF) fibrous memristor. This memristor demonstrates high stability, low operating power, and the capability to simulate synaptic plasticity. As a result, an artificial pr

Enacting a Grand Challenge for Business and Society: Theorizing Issue Maturation in the Media-Based Public Discourse on COVID-19 in Three National Contexts.

While today it is universally acknowledged that COVID-19 has generated immense challenges for businesses and societies worldwide, public perceptions varied significantly at the time of the pandemic's initial appearance, even among democratic societies with comparable media systems. The growing scholarship on grand societal challenges in management and organization studies, however, tends to neglect the initial social construction of issues as complex, uncertain, evaluative, and widespread. We address this shortcoming by exploring the initial communicative enactment of COVID-19 in the media-bas

Transition of Care from Pediatric to Adult Care in Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Insights From a Patient Perspective Survey.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disease. Patients with a childhood diagnosis require ongoing disease management in adulthood; however, knowledge of the patient experience during pediatric to adult healthcare transition is lacking. Here, an online survey captured patient perceptions of the challenges faced by patients with EoE in the United States during transition to adult healthcare, and which resources, if implemented, could better support transition. Of 67 respondents, 91% (n = 61) were under adult care at the time of survey completion. Aspects that respondents s

Precocious Puberty and Covid-19 Into Perspective: Potential Increased Frequency, Possible Causes, and a Potential Emergency to Be Addressed.

A significant increase in precocious puberty, rapidly progressive puberty and precocious menarche has been reported in Italy since the initial lockdown because of the pandemic, and this could represent a new emergency to be addressed during this pandemic. There is a need, therefore, for further understanding and research. Many causes could account for this. Initially, it was thought that the changes in life-style, in screen time, and sleeping habits could be the cause but if considered individually these are insufficient to explain this phenomenon. Likely, changes in central nervous mediators,

Emerging trends in point-of-care sensors for illicit drugs analysis.

Consumption of illicit narcotic drugs and fatal or criminal activities under their influence has become an utmost concern worldwide. These drugs influence an individual's feelings, perceptions, and emotions by altering the state of consciousness and thus can result in serious safety breaches at critical workplaces. Point-of-care drug-testing devices have become the need-of-the-hour for many sections such as the law enforcement agencies, the workplaces, etc. for safety and security. This review focuses on the recent progress on various electrochemical and optical nanosensors developed for the a

Vaccine humanity.

Vaccines to help prevent COVID-19 disease have evoked myriad human emotions. Attitudes of the public toward vaccination can be grouped into hundreds of categories. Pharmacists need to recognize the many elements of what may be termed "vaccine humanity," a complex tangle of human responses. Vaccine humanity applies to all vaccines, not just COVID-19 vaccines. Many of the emotions (pro and con) exhibited toward COVID-19 vaccines were also expressed (pro and con) with Edward Jenner's smallpox vaccine in the 1800s. New disease, new vaccines, same humanity. Human behaviors to seek or decline vaccin

The Treatment of Facial Asymmetry with Botulinum Toxin: Current Concepts, Guidelines, and Future Trends.

This article will describe facial asymmetry secondary to facial nerve paralysis (FNP), and review current concepts, guidelines, and future trends. Despite the increasing use of botulinum toxin (BoNTA) in treating FNP, ideal dosage, timing, and additional therapies are not unequivocally established. Facial asymmetry significantly impacts quality of life (QOL) by strongly affecting self-perception and social interactions; injectables may mediate great clinical improvement. This article provides practical guidelines for the use of BoNTA and provides schemes for accurate assessment and documentati

Mining Social Media for Perceptions and Trends on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is an approach for preventing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which entails the administration of antiretroviral medication to high-risk seronegative persons. If taken correctly, PrEP can reduce HIV infection risk by more than 90%. The aim of this study was to identify and examine PrEP-related perceptions and trends discussed on Twitter. Using open-source technologies, text-mining and interactive visualisation techniques, a comprehensive data gathering and analytics Web-based platform was developed to facilitate the study objectives. Our results demonstr

Transient Dyschromatopsia, Static Form Agnosia, and Prosopagnosia Observed in a Patient with Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis.

We presented a case of a 19-year-old woman who suffered from anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis associated with ovarian teratoma. The patient showed a variety of higher visual symptoms which changed over the recovery phase of the disease. In chronological order, she experienced cortical blindness, amblyopia, dyschromatopsia, static form agnosia, and prosopagnosia. Among these symptoms, the most intriguing was the static form agnosia. Although she could recognize the forms of moving objects, she could not make out those of stationary ones. All of these visual symptoms were t

Tracking the Subtle Mutations Driving Host Sensing by the Plant Pathogen Streptomyces scabies.

The acquisition of genetic material conferring the arsenal necessary for host virulence is a prerequisite on the path to becoming a plant pathogen. More subtle mutations are also required for the perception of cues signifying the presence of the target host and optimal conditions for colonization. The decision to activate the pathogenic lifestyle is not "taken lightly" and involves efficient systems monitoring environmental conditions. But how can a pathogen trigger the expression of virulence genes in a timely manner if the main signal inducing its pathogenic behavior originates from cellulos

Takayasu's retinopathy.

We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with Takayasu's arteritis who experienced progressive visual loss in her right eye (RE) over several months. Visual acuity was 0.4 in the RE, which showed marked retinal arteriovenous dilation and highly irregular arteriolar calibre. She had no light perception in the left eye, which showed diffuse atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium and prepapillary fibrovascular proliferation. Fluorescein angiography revealed delayed and slow retinal and choroidal circulation and areas of peripheral ischemia. A diagnosis of Takayasu's retinopathy was made and t

Effects of cognitive and experiential group therapy on self-efficacy and perceptions of employability of chemically dependent women.

This quasi-experimental study assessed effects of cognitive and experiential group therapy on self-efficacy and perceptions of employability for 52 chemically dependent adult women. The sample was 98% African American. Therapy consisted of six 90-min group sessions held twice weekly. The participants were pre- and posttested with the Self-Efficacy Scale (M. Sherer et al., 1982) and the Ghiselli Self-Description Inventory (E. E. Ghiselli, 1975). After the intervention, the cognitive group had significantly higher levels than the experiential group of social self-efficacy and need for self-actua

Sexual abuse, parental bonding, social support, and program retention for women in substance abuse treatment.

Residential programs that provide safe environments and child care can attract perinatal women into treatment. Other factors, however, may prevent some women from benefiting from these programs. Attachment theory suggests that one's early history determines the effectiveness with which one can utilize available social supports. Lower levels of program retention were predicted for women who had been sexually abused and for those who had poor early bonding. Eighty-four women in residential substance abuse treatment programs were studied. Clients who reported sexual abuse also reported lower pare

Functional status and well-being of patients with chronic conditions. Results from the Medical Outcomes Study.

Enhancing daily functioning and well-being is an increasingly advocated goal in the treatment of patients with chronic conditions. We evaluated the functioning and well-being of 9385 adults at the time of office visits to 362 physicians in three US cities, using brief surveys completed by both patients and physicians. For eight of nine common chronic medical conditions, patients with the condition showed markedly worse physical, role, and social functioning; mental health; health perceptions; and/or bodily pain compared with patients with no chronic conditions. Each condition had a unique prof
