The demonstration of a fluid-fluid level (FFL) within an osseous lesion on computed tomography (CT) has been reported as suggestive of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) although FFLS have also been rarely found in association with other lesions. Rare large ab initio calcifications of a primary mediastinal seminoma in a 16-year-old boy and of para-aortic nodal metastatic ovarian seminoma in a 14-year-old girl are demonstrated with CT but not with conventional radiography. They are most likely dystrophic calcifications because of the absence of other germ cell tumor components and infective granulomatous disease. Routine use of CT might detect more such calcifications in untreated seminoma.

Cranial Computed Tomography (CCT) findings in 123 patients suffering from Parkinson's syndrome were compared with a sex- and age-matched normal control group. Signs of supratentorial atrophy--cortical and subcortical--were more significantly marked in the Parkinson group. In both groups, signs of atrophy were more prevalent in men than in women. Parkinsonian women also more frequently showed limited features, such as lacunar lesions, around the lateral ventricles. Moreover, in these patients atrophy was marked in the frontal cortex.

This study deals with the role of MRI in elucidating clinically silent lesions of the breast with indeterminate changes on mammography. MRI localisation of suspected lesions was possible in all cases by using double coils after contrast enhancement of the glandular tissue, independent of the findings on mammography. Inability to demonstrate micro-calcification did not prove a disadvantage. MRI cannot provide a definite tissue diagnosis, since there is overlap between the appearances of malignant and benign lesions.

The clinical data and computed tomographic findings of 64 patients with solitary supratentorial brain lesions were presented to two panels of six experienced clinicians. 201T1 SPECT was performed in 84 patients with suspected lung cancer. Both early and delayed scans demonstrated abnormal accumulation in 67 of 68 malignant pulmonary lesions and in nine of 18 benign conditions. All of 64 lung cancer were clearly visualized. Delayed ratio (uptake ratio of the lesion to the normal lung on delayed scan) and retention index (degree of retention in the lesion) were helpful to differentiate malignant from benign lesions. This method was also useful to evaluate mediastinal involvement from lung cancer.

In a review of 1708 consecutive CT examinations of the abdomen the position of the ascending and descending colon in relation to the posterior and lateral edge of the kidney was studied. It was found that part of the colon was positioned posterior or posterolateral to the kidney's edge in percentages that varied between 14.2% and 0.9% in the different sex groups at the levels of upper, mid- and lower poles of the right and left kidney. It is concluded that this anatomical variation should be known if colon perforation is to be avoided during percutaneous nephrostomy or biopsy.

We used CT to make a quantitative evaluation of the pontine volumes of 55 patients with adult-onset cerebellar degeneration and compared the results with their clinical records. Patients with pontine atrophy showed significantly more autonomic dysfunction and extrapyramidal signs; their other clinical features did not differ from patients without pontine atrophy. After dividing the patients into 2 groups, those with and without autonomic dysfunction or extrapyramidal signs, we found that those with these manifestations also had pontine atrophy, a later onset and shorter duration of the disease

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging performed in 13 patients with moyamoya disease was reviewed and compared with computed tomography (CT) and angiography. The MR findings consisted of occlusion of arteries, collateral vessels and parenchymal changes.
