Optic atrophy as a complication of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.

A five-month-old girl with optic atrophy presented porencephaly on computerized tomography of the brain. Diffuse intracranial hemorrhages occurred in the neonatal period as a result of thrombocytopenia. As the maternal platelets were negative for the platelet antigens, the diagnosis of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia was made. The present case shows that optic atrophy as a single finding can lead to the diagnosis of a rare disorder.

Optic nerve disturbance caused by frontal and fronto-ethmoidal mucopyoceles.

We saw three cases of optic nerve disturbance caused by frontal and fronto-ethmoidal mucopyoceles. A causative factor of optic nerve disturbance due to pyoceles might be not only related to compression but also to inflammatory invasion and vascular disturbance. The importance of axial and coronal computed tomography scans is emphasized for evaluating the extension of mucopyoceles and the relationship between the lesion and the adjacent structures.

Optic neuropathy in high myopia: Glaucoma or high myopia or both?

Due to the increasing prevalence of high myopia around the world, structural and functional damages to the optic nerve in high myopia has recently attracted much attention. Evidence has shown that high myopia is related to the development of glaucomatous or glaucoma-like optic neuropathy, and that both have many common features. These similarities often pose a diagnostic challenge that will affect the future management of glaucoma suspects in high myopia. In this review, we summarize similarities and differences in optic neuropathy arising from non-pathologic high myopia and glaucoma by consid

Structural-functional dissociation in presumed ethambutol optic neuropathy.

A 55-year-old man with pulmonary Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection developed decreased vision to 3/200 in the right eye, and 20/200 in the left eye, 11 months after starting ethambutol, rifampin, and isoniazid. A diagnosis of presumed ethambutol optic neuropathy was made, and the medications were discontinued. Visual acuity gradually improved to 20/30 and 20/70 over a period of 34 months. Despite improved central vision and visual field, the patient developed progressive bilateral optic disc cupping, disc pallor, and diffuse nerve fiber layer loss on optical coherence tomography. Th

Functional and structural analysis of partial optic nerve avulsion due to blunt trauma: case report.

Partial optic nerve avulsion (ONA) secondary to finger gouging is an uncommon but devastating injury. A 21-year-old man who had an acute vision loss after accidentally getting poked by himself in his right eye when he fell down during jogging is reported. The patient was diagnosed with partial ONA. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed intact optic nerve. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed deep cavity at the inferior-temporal half of the optic disc. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was also thin at the inferior quadrant with circumpapillary OCT scan. Visual field test and electrophys

Parathyroid gland management using optical technologies during thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy: A systematic review.

New optical technologies enhancing localization or assessing viability of parathyroid glands (PG) during endocrine surgery have been reported in clinical studies. These technologies could become complementary to the surgeon's eyes and may improve surgical outcomes in thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy. Here, we conducted a systematic review focusing on PG identification and functional assessment using optical methods to enhance surgery. A systematic literature review was performed using MEDLINE and Embase database. Two authors selected studies and extracted data; qualitative analysis was perf

Case report: Partial visual recovery from incomplete traumatic optic nerve avulsion caused by a badminton shuttle.

PURPOSE: Blunt ocular trauma rarely results in optic nerve avulsion. Here, we report a case of incomplete optic nerve avulsion caused by the impact of a badminton shuttlecock. OBSERVATIONS: The patient was a 16-year-old healthy male. A badminton shuttlecock hit his right eye from a short distance. On his first visit to the local eye clinic, his visual acuity in the right eye was hand motion. About 4-mm hyphema in height was observed in the right eye. Three days after the injury, visual acuity improved to 20/50, but the intraocular pressure increased to 40 mmHg; hence, intraocular pressure (IO

Multimodal Imaging of Large Optic Disc Coloboma: A Report of Three Cases.

Optic disc coloboma (ODC) is a rare congenital anomaly of the optic nerve. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) helps to monitor the complications when there is associated retinoschisis, retinal detachment, or peripapillary neovascularization, while being minimally invasive. OCT angiography could help to better understand this entity from a vascular perspective. We report multimodal imaging of 3 children with large ODC associated with cat eye syndrome, CHARGE syndrome (coloboma, heart defects, atresia choanae, growth retardation, genital abnormalities, and ear abnormalities), and branchio-oculo-

[Enlarged blind spot and reduced visual evoked potentials due to melanocytoma of the optic disc].

A 59-year-old male patient presented with clinical characteristics of a melanocytoma of the optic disc in the right eye. Using functional tests, such as visual acuity, visual fields, visual evoked potentials (VEP) and imaging procedures (e.g., fundus photography and spectral domain optical coherence tomography) the findings were documented. Best corrected visual acuity was 25/20 in both eyes. Ophthalmoscopy showed a slightly prominent and pigmented tumor in the upper third of the optic disc. Comparing both eyes, an enlarged blind spot and a reduction of VEP were detectable.

Microcysts in the inner nuclear layer, a nonspecific SD-OCT sign of cystoid macular edema.

Recently, many authors have propagated the notion that a specific form of "microcystic macular edema" occurs in patients with optic neuritis and optic atrophy of various etiology and is due to retrograde synaptic degeneration. The finding is isolated to the inner nuclear layer on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in most cases, and is present in a parafoveal, circumferential, and central macular distribution. This perspective critically reviews the evidence and suggests that inner nuclear layer cystoid changes are an early and nonspecific indicator of typical cystoid macular edema o

A practical approach to optic nerve crush in the mouse.

Our goal is to provide an instructional resource to help others wishing to use the optic nerve crush (ONC) as an experimental procedure. The process is described beginning with the anesthesia, followed by positioning of the mouse, the surgery itself, and post-surgical care. We analyzed the effect of ONC on retinal blood flow, using optical coherence tomography doppler. This procedure produces a consistent loss of cells in the ganglion cell layer, using whole mounts of retina stained with TO-PRO-3. An instructional video is presented that demonstrates a simple surgical approach to effectively c

Case report: Bilateral central serous chorioretinopathy-like abnormalities in a man with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) leads to progressive increases in pulmonary vascular resistance, right heart failure, and death if left untreated. Ocular complications secondary to PAH were less reported. In this study, we reported a case of bilateral visual loss and metamorphopsia in a patient with PAH, who developed central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR)-like abnormalities and optic disc atrophy. CASE SUMMARY: A 45-year-old man presented with decreasing central vision and metamorphopsia in both eyes. He had a history of PAH and 6-year history of low-dose oral sildenafil t

The application of artificial intelligence in glaucoma diagnosis and prediction.

Artificial intelligence is a multidisciplinary and collaborative science, the ability of deep learning for image feature extraction and processing gives it a unique advantage in dealing with problems in ophthalmology. The deep learning system can assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing characteristic fundus lesions in glaucoma, such as retinal nerve fiber layer defects, optic nerve head damage, optic disc hemorrhage, etc. Early detection of these lesions can help delay structural damage, protect visual function, and reduce visual field damage. The development of deep learning led to the emergenc
