Pathological and biochemical study in the adenoid of mucopolysaccharidosis II.

In the patients with mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II, Hunter's syndrome), conductive and sensorineural hearing deficits are frequently observed. Two patients with MPS II underwent adenoidectomy and an ear douche, and their conductive hearing loss recovered after the surgery. Pathological examination of the adenoids revealed the infiltration of faintly PAS-positive plasmacytes with perinuclear vacuole and strongly Alcian-blue positive fibrotic area. Biochemical study was performed by chromatoscanning of electropholesis. The amount of glycosaminoglicans (GAG) in the specimens was increased 2.8-

Snoring: surgical vs. nonsurgical management.

Eighteen children were treated for snoring. Surgical removal of enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids resulted in prompt and total elimination of snoring in 17 of these patients. One child required nasal and sinus surgery to gain relief from snoring. Eighty-three adults were interviewed, examined, and treated for snoring. Correction of anatomical abnormalities in the nose, soft palate, uvula, and pharynx achieved elimination of snoring in 72% of surgically treated cases. By contrast, nonsurgical remedies achieved snoring elimination in only 5% of patients (controls). Tracheostomy was required in 10

Conceptual understanding of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris as an immune complex disease due to focal tonsillar infections.

The relationship between pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) and immune complexes was studied in 17 patients who underwent tonsillectomy. By means of the Clq-binding test, immune complexes were detected in a considerable number of sera from these patients. Patients with a high serum level of immune complexes which decreased following tonsillectomy were found to benefit by a remarkable improvement in their skin lesions. There was a close association between the degree of improvement in skin lesions following tonsillectomy, and the changes in circulating immune complex levels after tonsillect

Salmonella Reading Inoculation Dose Impacts the Host Colonization and Immune Response in Turkey Poults.

Salmonella enterica serovar Reading has been associated with foodborne disease outbreaks from contaminated poultry products. This study investigated the effect of S. Reading inoculation dose on Salmonella prevalence and cecal loads, and the mRNA abundance of immune response genes in turkey poults, with higher doses expected to increase colonization and elicit stronger immune responses. Day-old poults (n = 487) were assigned to four groups based on S. Reading inoculation doses of 2, 4, 6, and 8-log CFU/mL per bird, with 28 birds per pen and 4 replicate pens per treatment group. Additional poult

A Small Molecule Compound, Berberine Reduces IgE but Not IgG Production via Promoting miRNA-34a-p53 Axis.

Current therapeutic strategies for IgE-mediated diseases are limited. The drawbacks include adverse reactions, ineffectiveness, and relapses. Natural compound berberine (BBR) may combat this therapeutic gap through sustained transcriptional regulation of IgE. Human tonsil cells were cultured in the presence or absence of BBR to establish dose-dependent effects on IgE, IgG, and cell viability. IgE-producing plasma cells (U266, IgE plasma cells) and IgG-producing plasma cells (ARH-77, IgG plasma cells) were used as surrogate cells to validate dose-dependent effects on IgE and IgG production, res

Effect of modified clivoaxial angle on surgical decision making and treatment outcomes in patients with Chiari malformation type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1), a complex pathological developmental disorder of the craniovertebral junction, is typically characterized by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils from the foramen magnum. Treatment using posterior fossa decompression alone without taking the ventral cervico-medullary compression into consideration may lead to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. The current study evaluated the utility of the modified clivoaxial angle (MCAA) in assessing ventral compression and also examined its effect on treatment outcomes. METHOD: This retrospective study include

Adherence to CPAP therapy in Down syndrome: the population-based DISCOVERY study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Persons with Down syndrome (DS) have an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) needing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), but data on the therapy and outcomes in this population are scarce. We aimed to compare patient characteristics and outcomes of CPAP treatment for patients with OSA with and without DS. METHODS: This was a population-based, longitudinal study on patients initiating CPAP therapy between July 2010 and March 2018 in Sweden and a population-based sex- and age-matched control group (control:case ratio 5:1), with linked data from the Swedish N

Chiari Type 1 malformation: CSF flow dynamics and morphology in the posterior fossa and craniocervical junction and correlation of these findings with syrinx formation.

BACKGROUND: Chiari type 1 malformation (CMI) is a disorder in which cerebellar tonsils descend below the foramen magnum. Although syringomyelia associated with CMI thought to be caused by hypoplastic posterior fossa and stenosis at the craniocervical junction; it has characteristic neurological and radiological features and the exact mechanism of syringomyelia remains unknown. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to gain insight into morphological changes in posterior fossa and to find whether there is a difference in aqueductal stroke volume (ASV) between CMI with syrinx and without syri

Clinical correlations to distinguish severe from milder forms of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome using overnight oximetry for prioritising adenotonsillectomy in a limited-resource setting.

BACKGROUND: In resource-poor settings with limited surgical services, it is essential to identify and prioritise children with severe and very severe obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) to expedite surgery. McGill's Oximetry Score (MOS) has been validated against polysomnography for OSAS and is affordable and easy to use. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the correlation of tonsillar size and clinical symptoms with MOS grade 3 or 4, to identify who requires overnight oximetry and who to prioritise for adenotonsillectomy. METHODS: Children with suspected OSAS were recruited from

Making a science out of preanalytics: An analytical method to determine optimal tissue fixation in real-time.

Modern histopathology is built on the cornerstone principle of tissue fixation, however there are currently no analytical methods of detecting fixation and as a result, in clinical practice fixation is highly variable and a persistent source of error. We have previously shown that immersion in cold formalin followed by heated formalin is beneficial for preservation of histomorphology and have combined two-temperature fixation with ultra-sensitive acoustic monitoring technology that can actively detect formalin diffusing into a tissue. Here we expand on our previous work by developing a predict

A new hypothesis for the pathophysiology of symptomatic adult Chiari malformation Type I.

Chiari malformation Type I (CMI) is characterized by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. The pathophysiology of CMI is not well elucidated; however, the prevailing theory focuses on the underdevelopment of the posterior cranial fossa which results in tonsillar herniation. Symptoms are believed to be due to the herniation causing resistance to the natural flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and exerting a mass effect on nearby neural tissue. However, asymptomatic cases vastly outnumber symptomatic ones and it is not known why some people become symptomatic. Recently,

The Scrapie Prevalence in a Goat Herd Is Underestimated by Using a Rapid Diagnostic Test.

Current European surveillance regulations for scrapie, a naturally occurring transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) or prion disease in sheep and goats, require testing of fallen stock or healthy slaughter animals, and outline measures in the case of confirmation of disease. An outbreak of classical scrapie in a herd with 2500 goats led to the culling of the whole herd, providing the opportunity to examine a subset of goats, take samples, and examine them for the presence of disease-associated prion protein (PrPSc) to provide further information on scrapie test sensitivity, pathology, a

Investigations of relationships between alterations of the gastrointestinal tract caused by feeding variously processed feedstuffs and blood and immunological traits of broilers.

The influence of variously processed feedstuffs on the gastrointestinal tract, various blood parameters, and T cell subsets of different localizations was investigated in 36 broilers. Birds were fed a similarly composed feed mixture differing in particle size (coarse vs. fine). Feedstuffs with different particle size distribution were additionally hydrothermally treated (HTT) (without-non-compacted, pelleted, expanded, and pelleted). The HTT affected BW at slaughtering day and feed intake (P < 0.001). Birds fed non-compacted feed consumed less feed and were lighter than animals of other feedin

The Pathogenesis of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Pigs.

The greatest proportion of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) clinical research has been dedicated to elucidating pathogenesis and enhancing vaccine protection in cattle with less efforts invested in studies specific to pigs. However, accumulated evidence from FMD outbreaks and experimental investigations suggest that critical components of FMD pathogenesis, immunology, and vaccinology cannot be extrapolated from investigations performed in cattle to explain or to predict outcomes of infection or vaccination in pigs. Furthermore, it has been shown that failure to account for these differences may ha

Clinical values for abnormal ¹⁸F-FDG uptake in the head and neck region of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is used to identify index or second primary cancer (SP) of the head and neck (HN) through changes in (18)F-FDG uptake. However, both physiologic and abnormal lesions increase (18)F-FDG uptake. Therefore, we evaluated (18)F-FDG uptake in the HN region to determine clinical values of abnormal tracer uptake. METHODS: A prospective study approved by the institutional review board was conducted in 314 patients with newly diagnosed HN squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and informed consent w
