Pelvic Floor Muscle Training In Women Practicing High-impact Sports: A Systematic Review.

Urinary incontinence (UI) in female athletes can impair their quality-of-life (QoL) and reduce their participation in sports. This review aims to evaluate the effect of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in treating UI in women participating in high-impact sports. Furthermore, to assess the influence of PFMT on pelvic floor muscles (PFM) function and the UI impact on their QoL. For this purpose, a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs was performed. An electronic search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, SciELO, and Scopus. The quality of evidence was assessed us…

The impact of surgeon operative volume on risk of reoperation within 5 years of mid-urethral sling: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Undesired outcomes after mid-urethral sling (MUS), such as mesh exposure or surgical failure, can necessitate further procedures. The objective of this review is to evaluate the association between surgeon operative volume and the risk of reoperation after MUS. METHODS: Eligible studies were selected through an electronic literature search from database and references of the studies included. Databases were searched for original studies reporting on the MUS procedure, reoperation, and operative volume. Random effects models were used to estimate the pooled OR of r

Efficacy and patient acceptability of the continence dish.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The continence dish has been a treatment option since 2002 for women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) who decline surgery, but few quantitative objective efficacy data are published. We aimed to determine the efficacy and acceptability of this device for pure SUI or mixed incontinence (MUI). METHODS: Prospective interventional cohort study of 100 women with SUI or stress-predominant MUI who were interested to use the device; International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ) was primary outcome measure; 24-h pad test and Incontinence Impact Ques…

Serum calcium and magnesium levels in women with detrusor overactivity.

The aim of this study was to determine whether abnormal serum levels of magnesium and calcium occur in women with detrusor overactivity. These were compared with the serum level of magnesium and calcium ions in women with urodynamic stress incontinence as controls to see whether alteration of these levels offer a further therapeutic option. The study included 20 women with urodynamically proven detrusor overactivity compared with 20 women with urodynamic stress incontinence as controls. A blood test was taken to determine serum levels of total magnesium phosphate together with free and correct

Pressure transmission ratio reproducibility in stress continent and stress incontinent women.

Our objective was to determine the effect of cough strength on pressure transmission ratios and establish quantitative and qualitative intra-observer test-retest reproducibility of pressure transmission ratios calculated from dynamic urethral pressure profilometry. The study included 242 consecutive urodynamic evaluations on women without pelvic organ prolapse. Dynamic urethral pressure profiles were performed in duplicate with coughs of different intensities. The analysis included pressure transmission ratios from the proximal 3 urethral quartiles (Q1 through Q3) and the mean pressure transmi

Endoscopically guided bladder neck suspension for continence in paraplegic women with implant driven micturition.

Two paraplegic women who had undergone implantation of a sacral anterior nerve root stimulator to treat their voiding difficulties and recurrent urinary tract infections subsequently suffered from stress incontinence. After urodynamic evaluation they were treated with a Stamey operation which rendered them dry without hindering their implant driven micturition.

Identifying types of female incontinence with retrograde urethrocystography.

The most specific radiographic findings characterizing stress incontinence (SI) on upright retrograde urethrocystography include replacement of a flat or rounded bladder base with a concave funnelled base; patency of the bladder neck with contrast material pooling in the proximal urethra; the descent of the intravesical Foley balloon beyond the internal meatus and into the proximal urethra. We found that neither a cystocele nor the dependent position of the urethra at the bottom of the bladder were diagnostic of SI if the above stigmata were absent. On the other hand the defect of urgency inco

Continent catheterizable conduits in pediatric urology: One-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a standard treatment for patients who are unable to empty the bladder. In the absence of the urethra or if catheterization through the urethra is problematic, a continent vesicostomy is used as a catheterizable conduit. The Malone procedure is an established treatment option for children with neurogenic constipation and fecal incontinence. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to report the authors' experience with continent catheterizable conduits (CCCs) in children, to review the results and to determine the efficacy of the technique, w

The value of colpo-cysto-urethrography in female stress- and urge incontinence and following operation.

The value of colpo-cysto-urethrography (CCU) in female stress- and urge incontinence was measured. In a prospective series of 172 consecutive females with stress- or urge incontinence, CCU was performed and assessed with regard to no suspension defects, anterior defects, or posterior defects, respectively. Six months following operative repair for stress incontinence, CCU was repeated in 97 patients and compared with operative success. CCU was of minor value in the differentiation between stress- and urge incontinence. In stress incontinence, CCU was of greater value for the preoperative plann

Lower urinary tract dysfunction in childhood.

Lower urinary tract syndrome is common in children. Incontinence, urinary tract infection, vesicoureteral reflux, and constipation are commonly associated with this syndrome. Examining the clinical history of the afflicted patient plays a major role in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of lower urinary tract disorder. Along with pharmacologic treatment, pelvic floor muscle retraining, biofeedback therapy, and adaptation of a healthy lifestyle are advocated for rapid recovery of patients.

[Multimorbidity in Urology].

As people age, they increasingly experience multimorbidity, especially regarding urological conditions. Multimorbidity in elderly patients frequently includes urinary incontinence and subvesical obstruction. While urinary incontinence is often directly associated with other existing diseases or polymedication, subvesical obstruction may be unrelated to other morbidities. Subvesical obstruction often requires polymedication and is therefore a noteworthy condition in urological diagnostics and treatment. First and foremost, a focused diagnostic investigation must be performed, which then enables…
