Changes in Place of Death Among US Residents for HIV-Related and All-Cause Mortality, 2018-2022.

OBJECTIVE: Because people with diagnosed HIV infection have access to improved treatment regimens leading to extended survival, understanding the place of death is relevant for end-of-life planning. We examined changes in the identified place of death among US residents who died from any cause and HIV-related deaths. METHODS: We used data from the National Vital Statistics System mortality files in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research to describe the place of death (medical facility, patient's home, long-term care) among US popul

Factors Contributing to Labor Efficiency in School Sealant Programs in 11 US States, 2017-2023.

OBJECTIVES: Financial viability can be a challenge in implementing school sealant programs (SSPs). We provided efficiency benchmarks for 2 measures-clinical labor time and labor cost per child-to help SSPs evaluate their performance and quantify the effect of implementation practices on these efficiency measures. METHODS: We analyzed a convenience sample of data from 107 SSPs delivering sealants in 11 US states to 58 664 students during school years 2017-2018 through 2022-2023. We estimated measures of sealant service efficiency (SSE) per child sealed (SSEtime and SSElabor cost) and used mult

Successes in Reducing Cause-Specific Mortality, United States, 2000-2019.

OBJECTIVE: Major successes in improving health in the United States during the past century have occurred as our nation moved through the epidemiologic transition from high infectious disease mortality to predominantly chronic disease mortality. The objective of this study was to identify successes in improving America's health in the first 2 decades of the 21st century. METHODS: We identified leading causes of death among US adults with age-adjusted mortality rates that declined by ≥20% from 2000 to 2019. RESULTS: Eleven disease categories achieved a ≥20% mortality reduction, including the

The Weight of the Storm: Using Weighting Methods to Determine the Effect of Hurricane Harvey on Mental Health Outcomes in Harris County, Texas.

OBJECTIVES: Nonprobability sampling, commonly used in disaster research, can lead to incorrect estimates or limit the generalizability of results. We collected data through the Texas Flood Registry (TFR) and used raking and propensity score weighting to provide insight into the effect of Hurricane Harvey (hereinafter, Harvey) on Harris County, Texas. METHODS: From April 2018 through October 2020, residents of areas affected by Harvey enrolled in the TFR completed a survey on their storm-related experiences (n = 20 653). Using logistic regression, we assessed the relationship between Harvey-re

Community-Based Helicobacter pylori Screening to Identify Gastric Cancer Risk Among Korean-Born Adults in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Korean American adults have a high rate of gastric cancer in the United States. Although Helicobacter pylori, a major cause of noncardia gastric cancer, is commonly acquired early in life in regions with a high incidence of disease, data on infection history are limited. We assessed current and lifetime H pylori infection and examined gastric cancer prevention practices among Korean American adults. METHODS: We conducted 14 community outreach events in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York from June through October 2025. Participants completed a structured survey and underwent 13C

Smoking, Nicotine Dependence, and Suicide Risk: A Dose-Response Analysis Using the Heavy Smoking Index.

OBJECTIVES: Although smoking is a risk factor for suicide, the role of nicotine dependence is unclear. We evaluated whether the Heavy Smoking Index (HSI) could serve as a brief screening tool to identify Korean adults at elevated risk of suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts in population health settings. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2019 and 2022 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey using multivariable logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AORs) for suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts by smoking status and HSI-

Policy Versus Lived Reality: Recreation Time and Physical Activity in Arizona Jails.

OBJECTIVE: Recreation time provides important opportunities for physical activity, time outdoors, and stress reduction during incarceration, yet little is known about how recreation time policies are documented and implemented in US jails. We documented recreation time policies in Arizona county jails and assessed the degree to which written policies align with operational practices. METHODS: Using a modified policy surveillance approach, we abstracted recreation‑related policies from 14 Arizona jail handbooks. We documented operational practices through structured interviews with administrat

Change in Volume of Contacts to the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans After the US Supreme Court Ruling on Grants Pass v Johnson.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is an important public health issue, and the number of individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness has increased since 2020. On June 28, 2024, the US Supreme Court issued a 6-to-3 decision in City of Grants Pass v Johnson, which broadened the authority of local governments to prohibit public camping. The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans (NCCHV) offers a 24/7 virtual option for veterans to access services to address housing instability. The objective of this study was to assess whether expanded local enforcement authority affected inflow and characterist

A new behavioral method for assessing relational reasoning: Transitive inference list task.

Nonverbal transitive inference (TI) is the ability to derive novel relationships among items based on their existing relationships (e.g., if B > C and C > D, then B > D). Interpreting nonverbal TI research has been challenging due to the difficulty of distinguishing genuinely inferential behavior from performance driven by differences in associative strength accumulated during training. To address these shortcomings, we developed a novel transitive inference list (TIL) task designed to minimize associative strength confounds and provide a clear behavioral signature of competing strategies. In

Infection-Independent Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: An Illinois Vital Records System Analysis, 2019-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Infection mitigation practices and health care infrastructure challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in medical care and chronic disease detection and management. These challenges also hindered healthy lifestyle choices. We analyzed diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality independent of COVID-19 comorbidity to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on chronic disease mortality. METHODS: We obtained Illinois Vital Records System death records for calendar year 2019 (January 1 through December 1, 2019) and COVID-19 year 1 (March 16, 2020, through March

A Whole-Community Approach to Training Public Health and Medical Students in Public Health Emergencies.

In 2024, a community-higher education partnership in the Midwest prepared public health and medical students for public health emergencies using an innovative whole-community approach of private-public collaboration. The partnership program consisted of evidence-based, workshop-style training with community resident participation. Researchers posed 2 questions before program initiation: (1) How willing were students to respond to emergencies (on a Likert-type scale of 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree) before and after the program? and (2) What was the main challenge to mass-casualty
