Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a human disease characterized by high cancer risk, immune defects, radiation sensitivity, and genetic instability. Although A-T homozygotes are rare, the A-T gene may play a role in sporadic breast cancer and other common cancers. Eight patients with various hematologic disorders had an identical chromosomal aberration in their bone marrow or unstimulated peripheral blood, a translocation t(1;7) interpreted as t(1;7)(p11;p11). The translocation chromosome replaced one normal chromosome #7; therefore, the karyotype of the abnormal cells was trisomic for 1q and monosomic for 7q. PURPOSE: After properly staged renal injury many children will undergo radiological reevaluation with computerized tomography, the modality frequently favored for its widespread availability and anatomical detail. The ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) concept attempts to balance the potential future risk of radiation induced malignancy with the added information obtained by the study. At our institution ultrasound has been increasingly adopted as the followup imaging technique of choice. We sought to evaluate this practice in pediatric blunt renal trauma management.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced cardiac dysfunction (RICD) is a competing cause of morbidity and mortality in patients receiving thoracic radiation therapy (RT). Currently, there are no clinically-validated approaches for early detection of RICD at a time point that affords the potential for mitigation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of global longitudinal strain (GLS) derived from standard-of-care echocardiogram (ECHO) for the early detection of RICD and to assess the association between adverse GLS changes and survival in patients receiving thoracic RT.

Improvements in survival rates with gonad-sparing protocols for childhood and adolescence cancer have increased the optimism of survivors to become parents after treatment. Findings in rodents indicate that chromosomal aberrations can be induced in male germ cells by genotoxic exposures and transmitted to offspring and future generations with effects on development, fertility and health. INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced thyroid dysfunction after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) has been reported. This study investigated the radiation effects of the thyroid and pituitary glands on thyroid function after radiotherapy for NPC.
METHODS: Sixty-five NPC patients treated with radiotherapy were recruited. Baseline thyroid hormone levels comprising free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were taken before treatment and at 3, 6, 12 and 18 months. A seven-beam intensity-modulated radiotherapy plan was generated for each patient.
