Suspicious scars: physical child abuse vs Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Child abuse is a sensitive topic among many medical practitioners and the diagnosis of this entity requires awareness about conditions which can mimic physical child abuse. Here, the authors present a case of a 13-year-old school non-attendee who was referred due to multiple scars, over areas prone to accidental as well as non-accidental injury, who underwent medicolegal examination due to suspicion of physical child abuse. On further inquiry, it was discovered that she had easy bruising and poor wound healing. A diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was established and physical child abuse was

Chemical Burn-Induced Corrosive Epiglottitis in an Elderly Patient with Major Depression.

Acute epiglottitis (AE) is a potential emergency of the respiratory tract caused mainly by bacterial infection. However, nonbacterial infection causes, such as corrosive injuries, may result in death due to gastrointestinal perforation if a timely diagnosis is not available. We report the case of an elderly patient with an acute melancholic episode who encountered corrosive epiglottitis (CE) caused by accidental ingestion of hydrochloric acid and compare the features of CE and AE, including the immediate onset of symptoms, normal findings on blood tests, and endoscopy revealing pale swollen ep

APPLICATION OF REFLECTANCE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF RADIATION-INDUCED ACUTE DERMATITIS IN RADIOSENSITIVE PATIENT: CASE STUDY.

According to the guidelines on cancer treatment up to 52% of newly diagnosed cancer patients should be treated with external beam radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced skin injury (radiation dermatitis) occurs in up to 95% of radiotherapy patients and can manifest from mild erythema till necrosis and ulceration. Individual radiosensitivity was proposed to be an important factor for the development of adverse reactions to IR. Therefore, assessment of radiosensitivity could be useful in predicting and dealing with radiation injuries caused by both radiotherapy and accidental overexposure

Forensic physician's dilemma: Attempted suicide or homicide? A case report of an atypical cut-throat injury.

Cut-throat injuries are among the most serious forms of sharp force trauma encountered in medico-legal practice and frequently present complex interpretative challenge as they may suggest suicide, homicide or rarely, be accidental. particularly when classical morphological features are absent. In this case a 48-year-old woman with a history of depressive disorder presented with a deep transverse incised wound to the anterior neck, requiring emergency tracheostomy and surgical repair. Operative findings revealed two full-thickness incisions involving the thyroid cartilage and thyrohyoid membran

Fingertip Injuries.

Family physicians play a pivotal role in providing timely care for common fingertip injuries and minimizing long-term disability after injury. Subungual hematoma is diagnosed clinically and treated with observation or nail trephination. Nail bed lacerations are treated by removal of the nail and repair of the nail bed. Distal interphalangeal joint dislocations typically occur dorsally and result from hyperextension or hyperflexion during sports or because of accidental trauma. Management primarily involves closed reduction and splinting; however, surgical intervention might be necessary for co

Cardiothoracic injuries after CardioPump CPR: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

Although many clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy during active compression-decompression cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACD-CPR), the Ambu® CardioPump seems likely to cause severe and sometimes lethal injuries. In this paper, we report two cases observed at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Nancy, France. A 67-year-old man collapsed in the street, in the presence of witnesses, and without any sign of trauma. The autopsy revealed a flail chest, a wound of the left ventricle, a rupture of the right ventricle, and a wrenching of the inferior vena cava. A 71-year-old woman was found i

Preliminary evaluation of SensHand V1 in assessing motor skills performance in Parkinson disease.

Nowadays, the increasing old population 65+ as well as the pace imposed by work activities lead to a high number of people that have particular injuries for limbs. In addition to persistent or temporary disabilities related to accidental injuries we must take into account that part of the population suffers from motor deficits of the hands due to stroke or diseases of various clinical nature. The most recurrent technological solutions to measure the rehabilitation or skill motor performance of the hand are glove-based devices, able to faithfully capture the movements of the hand and fingers. Application of Mobile Health Technologies to Prevent Unintentional Childhood Injuries: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional childhood injuries represent a major public health issue affecting the lives and health of children worldwide, with the risk and injury type dynamically changing with age and developmental stage. To effectively prevent unintentional injuries, intervention measures must be adjusted based on actual circumstances and kept up to date in real time. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies can meet this need, but their specific functions and intervention methods remain unclear at present. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a scoping review of research on the application of

Facial Trauma Prevention in Adults and Children.

Facial trauma is a growing public health concern with substantial physical, psychological, and financial consequences. Injuries arise from multiple causes, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, and sports, and their impact differs across age, gender, and social groups. Older adults are increasingly affected by fall-related trauma, while women are more likely to experience violence-related injuries. Children and individuals with disabilities also face unique risks that require targeted approaches. Preventive strategies such as helmet use, seatbelts, fall-prevention programs, and e

Impact of urbanization factors on mortality due to unintentional injuries using panel data regression model and spatial-temporal analysis.

Unintentional injuries pose a great risk for human health in China. Few studies have focused on unintentional injuries at national level from urbanization perspective. The panel data of mortality rate of transportation accidents (TA), fall and drowning and sinking (DS) is investigated, and urbanization development index is collected. Global Moran's I and linear regression of panel data are applied to determine the spatial distribution and spatial influencing factors of unintentional injuries. The results are the following: (1) The unintentional injury such as TA, fall, and DS shows clear non-u

Posttraumatic volar tendon subluxation out of the first extensor compartment: a case report.

Symptomatic volar subluxation of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis tendons developed in a 29-year-old man after a sprain that occurred with the wrist in flexion and ulnar deviation. The extensor retinaculum, which forms the extensor compartment, was partially avulsed from its insertion on the radius. Palmar abduction and extension of the thumb with the wrist flexed produced subluxation of the tendons over the volar side of the radius ridge where the retinaculum forming the first extensor compartment attached. Nonoperative treatment including steroid injection and sp

Changes in circulating microRNAs following head impacts in soccer.

AIM: To explore the short-term effects of accidental head impacts and repetitive headers on circulating microRNAs, accounting for the effects of high-intensity exercise alone. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from professional soccer players at rest. Repeat samples were drawn 1 h and 12 h after three conditions: (1) accidental head impacts in a match, (2) repetitive headers during training, and (3) high-intensity exercise. 89 samples were screened to detect microRNAs expressed after each exposure. Identified microRNAs were then validated in 98 samples to determine consistently deregulate

Pregnant Women's Intentions to Implement Safety Practices for Preventing Infant Injury: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Injury prevention education for pregnant women may be beneficial for infants' safety. Currently, knowledge about the scope of an expectant mother's intent to prevent injury is limited. The objective of this study was to determine pregnant women's intentions to implement infant injury prevention strategies. From May to June 2017, a self-administered questionnaire based on the precaution adoption process model was distributed among pregnant women who participated in a parenting preparation class in a city, Tokyo. Pregnant women's intentions to implement the following eight kinds of safety practi

Intracranial injuries on computed tomography head scans in infants investigated for suspected physical abuse: a retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: UK national guidelines recommend that investigation of infants (aged <12 months) with suspected physical abuse should always include CT head scans. Such imaging carries small but recognised risks from radiation exposure. Studies report a range of yields for occult intracranial injuries in suspected physical abuse. AIMS: To report the yield of intracranial injuries on CT head scans carried out for suspected physical abuse in infants, compare yields for those presenting with or without signs of head injury and to describe selected clinical and radiological features. METHODS: A retr

Gender differences in the clinical characteristics of traumatic spinal fractures among the elderly.

In order to illustrate the epidemiology of traumatic spinal fractures among the elderly, with an emphasis on exploring gender differences in clinical characteristics, we retrospectively reviewed hospital records on all elderly patients with traumatic spinal fractures who were 60 years of age or older at two university-affiliated hospitals between January 2001 and December 2010. A total of 642 elderly patients with traumatic spinal fractures were identified, of whom 249 were male and 393 were female. Accidental falls from low heights were the most common cause of traumatic spinal fractures amon

Outcomes and longitudinal trend of traumatic cataract wound dehiscence in patients with blunt ocular injury.

Longitudinal trends on traumatic cataract wound dehiscence are scant. In this study, we present the characteristics of traumatic cataract wound dehiscence using 15 years of longitudinal trend in one of the largest medical centers in Taiwan for a period when cataract surgeries were gradually shifting from extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) to phacoemulsification. All patients with a prior cataract surgery who suffered from blunt open globe trauma between 2001 and 2015 at a tertiary referral center in Taiwan were included. The number of cases per year; type of prior cataract surgery; visua

Optimizing acute pain management in trauma care: the role, structure and core principles of acute trauma pain services.

Trauma injuries, both accidental and violence-related, account for a significant number of fatalities and non-fatal injuries annually, with pain being a predominant symptom affecting trauma patients. Despite its prevalence, pain is often undertreated in emergency settings, leading to adverse outcomes such as delayed recovery, impaired respiratory function, and increased risk of chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder. An Acute Trauma Pain Service (ATPS) is designed to address these issues through a multidisciplinary approach, involving anesthesiologists, pain nurses, and trauma special
