Sex as a moderator of the relationship between childhood trauma and depression in adulthood: an analysis in a clinical sample of adult patients.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is a well-established risk factor for depression in adulthood; however, not all individuals exposed to early adversity develop depressive disorders. Biological sex has been proposed as a potential moderator of this relationship, yet findings remain inconsistent, particularly in clinical samples. The present study aimed to examine whether biological sex moderates the association between childhood traumatic experiences and depression in a clinical sample of adults. METHODS: The study included 308 adults (73 patients diagnosed with depression and 235 non-clinical par

[Evolving strategies over time for treatment of breast cancer].

The natural history of breast diseases has changed overtime and successive therapeutic strategies have been adapted accordingly. Recently, biological findings on geno- and phenotypic characteristics of tumor cells offer new basis for the development of treatments that target homogenous and various subtypes of breast cancer. Unfortunately, traditional clinical research tools are not in phase with rapid changes in both biological knowledge of the disease and new targeted agents. New methodological approaches are urgently needed to validate such changes and improvements in prognosis.

Cognitive reserve and adaptive resilience: a conceptual analysis of a cross-species framework for neuropsychology and cognitive aging.

Why do some older adults maintain effective cognitive functioning despite substantial age-related brain change or neuropathology, whereas others with comparable neural burden show marked impairment? Related questions arise in comparative research, where organisms exposed to similar biological or environmental challenges may show markedly different adaptation patterns. Although these phenomena have traditionally been examined in separate literatures, they converge on a broader problem: how living systems maintain, recover, or reorganize function under challenge. This article develops a cross-sp

Neurobiology of rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation aims to lessen the physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities of patients with stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord or brain injury, and other neurologic diseases. Conventional approaches beyond compensatory adjustments to disability may be augmented by applying some of the myriad experimental results about mechanisms of intrinsic biological changes after injury and the effects of extrinsic manipulations on spared neuronal assemblies. The organization and inherent adaptability of the anatomical nodes within distributed pathways of the central nervous system offer a f

Hormesis as a Geometric Necessity of Bounded Adaptive Systems: Quantitative Predictions From First Principles.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether hormesis can be derived from the geometry of bounded adaptive biological endpoints, and whether the derivation yields quantitative predictions independent of curve fitting. METHODS: Bounded endpoints were represented in rapidity coordinates using the arctanh linearisation of the adopted Möbius composition law. Repair activation and damage accumulation were modelled as opposing bounded rapidity increments with independently measurable thresholds. The molecular-to-functional attenuation factor was derived for linear pathways from the metabolic-control summation

Parallel transcriptome adaptation during recent evolution of the Drosophila testis.

Understanding how natural selection shapes gene expression during species expansion remains a central question in evolutionary biology. Parallel evolution, defined as the independent emergence of similar phenotypes in different species or populations in response to similar selective pressures, provides a powerful framework for inferring the role of selection. Drosophila melanogaster has been a focal model system for investigating genomic and phenotypic variation driven by selection, whereas its sister species, D. simulans, has been largely understudied. D. melanogaster originated in sub-Sahara

Muscle-Tendon Unit Properties in Mice Bred for High Levels of Voluntary Running: Novel Physiologies, Coadaptation, Trade-Offs, and Multiple Solutions in the Evolution of Endurance Running.

AbstractMuscle-tendon unit (MTU) morphology and physiology are likely major determinants of locomotor performance and therefore Darwinian fitness. However, the relationships between underlying traits, performance, and fitness are complicated by phenomena such as coadaptation, multiple solutions, and trade-offs. Here, we leverage a long-running artificial selection experiment in which mice have been bred for high levels of voluntary running to explore MTU adaptation, as well as the role of coadaptation, multiple solutions, and trade-offs, in the evolution of endurance running. We compared the m

Utilising redundancy in musculoskeletal systems for adaptive stiffness and muscle failure compensation: a model-free inverse statics approach.

Vertebrates possess a biomechanical structure with redundant muscles, enabling adaptability in uncertain and complex environments. Harnessing this inspiration, musculoskeletal systems offer advantages like variable stiffness and resilience to actuator failure and fatigue. Despite their potential, the complex structure presents modelling challenges that are difficult to explicitly formulate and control. This difficulty arises from the need for comprehensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, including details such as muscle arrangement, and fully accessible muscle and joint states. Whilst

A multilayered immune system through the lens of unconventional T cells.

The unconventional T cell compartment encompasses a variety of cell subsets that straddle the line between innate and adaptive immunity, often reside at mucosal surfaces and can recognize a wide range of non-polymorphic ligands. Recent advances have highlighted the role of unconventional T cells in tissue homeostasis and disease. In this Review, we recast unconventional T cell subsets according to the class of ligand that they recognize; their expression of semi-invariant or diverse T cell receptors; the structural features that underlie ligand recognition; their acquisition of effector functi

Transcriptional adaptation of Mycobacterium ulcerans in an original mouse model: New insights into the regulation of mycolactone.

Mycobacterium ulcerans is the causal agent of Buruli ulcer, a chronic infectious disease and the third most common mycobacterial disease worldwide. Without early treatment, M. ulcerans provokes massive skin ulcers, caused by the mycolactone toxin, its main virulence factor. However, spontaneous healing may occur in Buruli ulcer patients several months or years after the disease onset. We have shown, in an original mouse model, that bacterial load remains high and viable in spontaneously healed tissues, with a switch of M. ulcerans to low levels of mycolactone production, adapting its strategy

Ecological niche adaptation of Salmonella Typhimurium U288 is associated with altered pathogenicity and reduced zoonotic potential.

The emergence of new bacterial pathogens is a continuing challenge for agriculture and food safety. Salmonella Typhimurium is a major cause of foodborne illness worldwide, with pigs a major zoonotic reservoir. Two phylogenetically distinct variants, U288 and ST34, emerged in UK pigs around the same time but present different risk to food safety. Here we show using genomic epidemiology that ST34 accounts for over half of all S. Typhimurium infections in people while U288 less than 2%. That the U288 clade evolved in the recent past by acquiring AMR genes, indels in the virulence plasmid pU288-1,

Amino acid substitutions involved in the adaptation of a novel H7N7 avian influenza virus in mice.

The H7N7 avian influenza viruses can infect humans and poses a great threat to human health. To identify the amino acid substitutions that are associated with adaptation of avian-origin H7N7 virus to mammals, adaptation of the H7N7 virus was carried out by serial lung-to-lung passage in mice. Genomic analysis of the mouse-adapted virus revealed amino acid changes in the PB2 (E525G, M645I, and D701N), NP (I475V), HA(D103N), and NA(K142E) proteins. The adapted H7N7 virus was more virulent in mice than the wild-type virus. Our results suggest that continued surveillance of poultry populations for

Concordant Changes in Gene Expression and Nucleotides Underlie Independent Adaptation to Hydrogen-Sulfide-Rich Environments.

The colonization of novel environments often involves changes in gene expression, protein coding sequence, or both. Studies of how populations adapt to novel conditions, however, often focus on only one of these two processes, potentially missing out on the relative importance of different parts of the evolutionary process. In this study, our objectives were 1) to better understand the qualitative concordance between conclusions drawn from analyses of differential expression and changes in genic sequence and 2) to quantitatively test whether differentially expressed genes were enriched for sit

The Role of Detoxification Enzymes in the Adaptation of the Major Malaria Vector Anopheles gambiae (Giles; Diptera: Culicidae) to Polluted Water.

The main malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa, the Anopheles gambiae (Giles; Diptera: Culicidae), normally breed in clean water sources. However, evidence suggests an on-going adaptation of Anopheline species to polluted breeding habitats in urban settings. This study aimed at understanding the adaptation to breeding in water bodies with different qualities, in five selected mosquito breeding sites in urban Accra, Ghana. The study sites were also evaluated for the WHO water-quality parameters as a measure of pollution, and insecticide residues. Field mosquitoes were evaluated for five genes;

The genome of an intranuclear parasite, Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae, reveals alternative adaptations to obligate intracellular parasitism.

Intracellular parasitism often results in gene loss, genome reduction, and dependence upon the host for cellular functioning. Rozellomycota is a clade comprising many such parasites and is related to the diverse, highly reduced, animal parasites, Microsporidia. We sequenced the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae [Rozellomycota], an intranuclear parasite of amoebae. A canonical fungal mitochondrial genome was recovered from P. saccamoebae that encodes genes necessary for the complete oxidative phosphorylation pathway including Complex I, differentiating it from

Siderophore-based microbial adaptations to iron scarcity across the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Nearly all iron dissolved in the ocean is complexed by strong organic ligands of unknown composition. The effect of ligand composition on microbial iron acquisition is poorly understood, but amendment experiments using model ligands show they can facilitate or impede iron uptake depending on their identity. Here we show that siderophores, organic compounds synthesized by microbes to facilitate iron uptake, are a dynamic component of the marine ligand pool in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Siderophore concentrations in iron-deficient waters averaged 9 pM, up to fivefold higher than in iron

Using the whole body as a sucker: combining respiration and feeding with an attached lifestyle in hill stream loaches (Balitoridae, Cypriniformes).

Small fishes living in fast-flowing rivers face a harsh environment as they can easily be swept away by the rapid currents. To survive such circumstances, teleosts evolved a wide variety of attachment mechanisms, based on friction, negative pressure or both. Balitorinae (Balitoridae, Cypriniformes) are exceptional in using their whole body as an adhesive apparatus. We investigated the morphological adaptations of Balitorinae by studying the osteology and myology of four species (Beaufortia leveretti, Sewellia lineolata, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, and Gastromyzon punctulatus) using clearing and
