Anoxia tolerance of the adult Australian Plague Locust (Chortoicetes terminifera).

Optimal breeding conditions for locust swarms often include heavy rainfall and flooding, exposing individuals to the risk of immersion and anoxia. We investigated anoxia tolerance in solitarious and gregarious adults of the Australian Plague Locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, by measuring the time to enter an anoxic coma after submersion in water, the time for recovery of ventilation and the ability to stand on return to air. We found a longer time to succumb in immature adults that we attribute to a larger tracheal volume. Time to succumb was also longer after autotomizing the hindlegs to redu

Understanding adaptogenic activity: specificity of the pharmacological action of adaptogens and other phytochemicals.

Adaptogens are stress-response modifiers that increase an organism's nonspecific resistance to stress by increasing its ability to adapt and survive. The classical reductionist model is insufficiently complex to explain the mechanistic aspects of the physiological notion of "adaptability" and the adaptogenic activity of adaptogens. Here, I demonstrate that (1) the mechanisms of action of adaptogens are impossible to rationally describe using the reductionist concept of pharmacology, whereas the network pharmacology approach is the most suitable method; and (2) the principles of systems biology

The tonic immobility test: Do wild and captive golden mantella frogs (Mantella aurantiaca) have the same response?

Adaptations to captivity that reduce fitness are one of many reasons, which explain the low success rate of reintroductions. One way of testing this hypothesis is to compare an important behavioural response in captive and wild members of the same species. Thanatosis, is an anti-predator strategy that reduces the risk of death from predation, which is a common behavioral response in frogs. The study subjects for this investigation were captive and wild populations of Mantella aurantiaca. Thanatosis reaction was measured using the Tonic Immobility (TI) test, a method that consists of placing a

Comparative hindlimb myology of foot-propelled swimming birds.

Several groups of birds have convergently evolved the ability to swim using their feet despite facing trade-offs with walking. However, swimming relative to terrestrial performance varies across these groups. Highly specialized divers, such as loons and grebes, excel at swimming underwater but struggle to stand on land, whereas species that primarily swim on the water surface, such as Mallards, retain the ability to move terrestrially. The identification of skeletal features associated with a swimming style and conserved across independent groups suggests that the hindlimb of foot-propelled sw

[Confronting the Health-Related Challenges of Climate Change: Nursing Education for the Future].

Climate change is the greatest threat to public health in the 21st century. The increasing health impact of heat waves, the increasing magnitudes and spatial expansions of vector and water-borne diseases epidemics, and the increasing medical burdens of biological allergic illnesses, worsening local air pollution, and other related issues are expected to continue to increase in severity in the near future. All of these issues are global problems that must be faced. Adaptation strategies and action plans related to climate change are needed and emerging. Moreover, integrating the basic concepts,

Does plant apparency matter? Thirty years of data provide limited support but reveal clear patterns of the effects of plant chemistry on herbivores.

According to the plant-apparency hypothesis, apparent plants allocate resources to quantitative defenses that negatively affect generalist and specialist herbivores, while unapparent plants invest more in qualitative defenses that negatively affect nonadapted generalists. Although this hypothesis has provided a useful framework for understanding the evolution of plant chemical defense, there are many inconsistencies surrounding associated predictions, and it has been heavily criticized and deemed obsolete. We used a hierarchical Bayesian meta-analysis model to test whether defenses from appare

Ecological strategies of Al-accumulating and non-accumulating functional groups from the cerrado sensu stricto.

The cerrado's flora comprises aluminum-(Al) accumulating and non-accumulating plants, which coexist on acidic and Al-rich soils with low fertility. Despite their existence, the ecological importance or biological strategies of these functional groups have been little explored. We evaluated the leaf flushing patterns of both groups throughout a year; leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Al, total flavonoids and polyphenols; as well as the specific leaf area (SLA) on young and mature leaves within and between the groups. In Al-accumulating plants, leaf flushed throughout the year, mainly i

Anatomy of Shoulder Girdle Muscle Modifications and Walking Adaptation in the Scaly Chinese Pangolin (Manis Pentadactyla Pentadactyla: Pholidota) Compared with the Partially Osteoderm-Clad Armadillos (Dasypodidae).

Because pangolins are unique mammals with a body and limbs almost entirely sheathed in hard keratinous overlapping scales and with digging and climbing abilities, the shoulder girdle muscles may differ significantly from those of other mammals including the partially osteoderm-clad armadillos. Therefore, we conducted a functional anatomical study of the shoulder girdle muscles in Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla, Pholidota) and some armadillo species (Dasypodidae). Our CT scans revealed that the pangolin's overlapping scales are hard structures completely encasing the limbs.

The niche construction perspective: a critical appraisal.

Niche construction refers to the activities of organisms that bring about changes in their environments, many of which are evolutionarily and ecologically consequential. Advocates of niche construction theory (NCT) believe that standard evolutionary theory fails to recognize the full importance of niche construction, and consequently propose a novel view of evolution, in which niche construction and its legacy over time (ecological inheritance) are described as evolutionary processes, equivalent in importance to natural selection. Here, we subject NCT to critical evaluation, in the form of a c

[Outline of general shock theory].

Being directly, extremely dangerously affected, the organism of man (and laboratory animals) automatically starts showing an ancient hypobiotic protective reaction in the form of unique torpid syndrome. However, hypobiotic conditions are evolutionarily alien to the superior brain formations. A functional conflict arises between the new and old regulatory systems. Increasing pathology of regulation forms the whole typical stereotypical shock syndrome with its dangerous pathological components and phase course. However, shock maintains the organism's vitality and saves it from immediate death af

[Application of the principles of the systemic approach to interpretation of the pathogenesis of traumatic shock and traumatic disease].

Experimental and clinical studies for many years led the authors to the conclusion that systemic approach seems most adequate for current interpretation of pathogenesis of traumatic disease (TD) and its component--traumatic shock (TS). It seems valid to assess TD and TS severity and dynamics by the proportion of pathological and adaptive reactions. Drugs should be used for maintenance and stimulation of adaptive reactions. Strong correlations of dynamics and severity of TD and TS enable prediction of TD course and outcome in acute period by time criterion (+)-T and distinguish three degrees of

Response of two populations of holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia Lam.) to sulfur dioxide.

Experiments were carried out with seedlings of Quercus rotundifolia Lam., an evergreen schlerophyllous tree typical of the Spanish Mediterranean climate environments. Fruits were collected in two distant (800 km) populations located in the center (southern Spain) and northern border (northern Spain) of the area of distribution of the species. One-month-old potted plants were grown for 130 days in an enriched atmosphere of SO2 (0.23 ppm, 14 h/day) in controlled (growth chamber) conditions. Both northern and southern plants underwent a significant decrease in growth rate as a consequence of the

[The reactions to weightlessness exposure: adaptation or disease?].

The arguments characterizing the poor theoretical validity and low profitability of the concept of "weightlessness disease" developed during recent few years by its authors are advanced. The morphofunctional rearrangements occurred in the body during space flights are considered as the result of adaptation-disadaptation rearrangements directed towards supporting the equilibrium with a set of reduced environmental requirements. Understanding the mechanisms of adaptation rearrangements creates the real but not forced basis for developing the measures for cosmonauts health stabilization and space

[Human life at high altitudes: myths and realities].

Life at high altitude presents very interesting biological and medical aspects. For countries such as the Andeans, it also has socio-economical implications. The most important towns of Bolivia are situated between 3,000 and 4,850 m. It's to say that a great percentage of the population is permanently staying there. Moreover owing to the improvement of the roads and transport, an extensive migration (professional life, business, tourism, sport) developed some years ago. At 3,000 to 4,850 m, an oxygen arterial pressure (PaO2) between 40 and 70 mm Hg is resulting from the environmental hypoxia.

Suppression of repetitive firing of neurons by diphenylbarbituric acid.

A slow outward current has been demonstrated in Aplysia giant neurons which serves to suppress repetitive firing. The barbiturates phenobarbital and pentobarbital enhance the slow outward current and the suppression of repetitive firing. In this study, the effects of diphenylbarbituric acid, which shows anticonvulsant activity in mice and rats but possesses minimal sedative properties, were tested on slow outward current and firing behavior. Diphenylbarbituric acid enhances slow outward current and suppresses repetitive firing at lower concentrations than phenobarbital and pentobarbital. Becau
