A cultural study on corneal explants and clinic assessment of the effectiveness of treating corneal ulcers induced by alkal test with topic aprotinin and fibronectin.

The A.A. studied the effectiveness of colliriums containing fibronectins aprotinin, and fibronectin associated with aprotinin compared to a placebo using 12 rabbits in which a deep corneal ulcer was induced by alkal. The results showed the same effectiveness of the three collyrium versus the placebo there was clinical recovery in all cases and restoration of corneal trasparency for 13 out of 15 treated eyes. Cellular cultures obtained from primary explants of treated corneal cells, compared with non treated groups, gave the same outcome of the clinical's ones.

Topical hydrogen peroxide and the safety of ocular tissues.

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective and commonly used contact lens disinfectant that is also used as a preservative in certain ocular medications. We describe the effects of hydrogen peroxide on the cornea and anterior chamber following its topical application via a contact lens or as drops. The conditions for interaction of hydrogen peroxide with corneal and palpebral tissues and its accumulation within the aqueous humor are detailed. Values are given for thresholds at which hydrogen peroxide in specified concentrations, volumes, locations, and durations of exposure can cause ocular pain, swell

Allergic conjunctivitis to chamomile tea.

Eye washing with chamomile tea is a folk remedy used by the general public to treat conjunctivitis and other ocular reactions. Chamomile is also found in many cosmetic products. Some cases of contact dermatitis (but not reactions of type I) were reported following its topical applications. We present seven hay fever patients that suffered from conjunctivitis; two of them also had lid angioedema after eye washing with chamomile tea. All seven patients had positive skin prick tests to the chamomile tea extract, Matricaria chamomilla pollen and Artemisia vulgaris pollen extracts. Positive conjunc

Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy Following the Administration of an Influenza Vaccination.

This manuscript reports a rare association of the development of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) after administration of an influenza vaccination. A 42-year-old white female presented with a 2-week history of black spots and a paracentral scotoma in the right eye after receiving a seasonal influenza vaccination. Findings on multimodal imaging were classic for AMN, and these findings improved but did not fully resolve 4 weeks after initial presentation with observation alone. Although a febrile illness or the use of oral contraceptives is most commonly associated with the development of AM

Cranio-facial dysmorphism: experimental study in the mouse, clinical applications.

To obtain a better understanding of mandibulo-facial dysostosis and hemicraniofacial microsomia in man, the authors carried out a histologic and scanning electron microscope study of the facial malformations produced in mouse embryos by retinoic acid and methyl-triazene. The administration of 400 mg/kg 13 cis-retinoic acid (RA) to pregnant C57BL mice on day 9 of gestation produced anomalies of the cephalic extremity in the embryos resembling human mandibulo-facial dysostosis. The 64 embryos collected presented hypoplasia of the branchial arches or the snout in 79% of cases, auricular anomalies

Ocular infections and stewardship practices for Ophthalmologists: The RED EYE AMSP model.

Ocular infections, ranging from conjunctivitis and keratitis to postoperative and device-associated endophthalmitis, remain a significant cause of preventable visual morbidity worldwide. In India and other low- and middle-income countries, the irrational use of topical and systemic antimicrobials, often without microbiological confirmation, has contributed to the emergence of multidrug-resistant ocular pathogens. Fluoroquinolone-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , and resistant Fusarium and Candida species are now major challenges in ophthalmic prac
