Adsorption of Zwitterionic and Capped Amino Acids to Graphene: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) materials are commonly used to immobilize environmental contaminants and could also bind amino acids or proteins (including proteinaceous contaminants), reducing their availability to plants and other organisms. This study determined the adsorption free energies of 20 amino acids to graphene (model PyC surface) and explored the effects of ionic strength on adsorption and the adsorption mechanisms, using umbrella sampling molecular dynamics. We simulated the interactions of amino acids with graphene in their zwitterionic and capped forms at ionic strength of 0 and 0.5 M (…

Molecular Insights into Adsorption Mechanisms of Micro- and Nanoplastics on Effective Adsorbent Materials.

Existing reviews on micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) removal from water rarely link adsorbent structural features to the molecular interactions governing removal performance. This review addresses this gap by examining MNP adsorption from a mechanism-oriented perspective, mapping six canonical interaction pathways across five adsorbent classes. Adsorption emerges as a system-dependent process governed by the interplay between polymer properties and surface chemistry rather than by the material alone. Interactions such as π-π stacking and hydrophobic affinity dominate for non-functionalized polymer…

Molecular Design of Flotation Collectors: Impact of an Allyl Group on Thionocarbamate Adsorption.

Thionocarbamates, particularly N-ethyl O-isopropyl thionocarbamate (IPETC), are widely used as collectors in froth flotation. The recently developed N-allyl O-isobutyl thionocarbamate (AIBTC) shows broader applicability and enhanced recovery for coarse and fine particles of energy-relevant minerals compared to conventional IPETC. In this study, we observed that AIBTC achieved greater recovery yet lower selectivity in copper ore flotation than IPETC. To understand this difference, we studied the adsorption of AIBTC and IPETC on Cu, Ag, and Fe sulfides using solution depletion, contact angle, si…

Mechanism of adsorption and biodegradation of typical antibiotics by sediments in mariculture tailwater system.

Antibiotics are extensively used in mariculture, leading to their persistent accumulation in sediments and posing ecological and health risks. Sediments act as both major sinks and active sites for antibiotic transformation, yet the mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined the roles of sediment adsorption and biodegradation in removal of enrofloxacin (ENR), oxytetracycline (OTC), and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) commonly used in mariculture. ENR and OTC were primarily removed via adsorption (88 % and 86 %), whereas SMZ removal involved both adsorption and biodegradation (54 % and 56 …

Research Progress and Prospects of Modified Biochar in the Adsorption and Degradation of Sulfonamide Antibiotics.

Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are ubiquitous and persistent organic contaminants in aquatic and soil ecosystems due to their extensive application and high structural stability, causing rising environmental hazards. Conventional treatment approaches, generally based on physical adsorption or biological processes, remain limited in achieving efficient and stable removal as well as deep molecular modification of SAs. In recent years, modified biochar has developed as a flexible environmental functional material incorporating adsorption and reaction regulation capabilities, owing to its customiza…

Effects of Polymer Topology and Crowder Size on Polymer Adsorption at Solid Interfaces.

Biological cells are crowded environments where macromolecular crowders significantly influence the conformation and dynamics of biopolymers … erate crowding fractions. In contrast, linear polymers exhibit a significantly higher threshold for adsorption, only gradually adhering to the wall at high crowder concentrations in the presence of free ends. Furthermore, large crowders create caging effects that sterically hinder mobility and suppress stable wall adsorption for both topologies. These findin …

An exact approach for describing adsorption and catalysis of interacting species in lattice models.

Lattice models provide a useful framework for studying the adsorption and catalysis of interacting species. For such systems, the mean-field and quasi-chemical approximations are widely used. At equilibrium, full enumeration of the grand-canonical partition function would allow for an exact solution to these problems. However, the combinatorial complexity confines this approach to small systems. In this work, we consider how large a lattice needs to be for full enumeration to yield a feasible solution for equilibrium systems. As representative applications, we consider adsorption isotherms and…

Molecular Simulation of the Adsorption Separation of Acidic Natural Gas Contaminants with Zeolites.

From an energetic, economic and environmental perspective, the selective removal of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from industrial natural gas streams is crucial. For this purpose, adsorption separation using nanoporous zeolites composed solely of silicon and oxygen atoms is a promising and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional adsorption and absorption processes. In this study, the adsorption of binary and ternary gas mixtures containing carbon dioxide, methane and/or hydrogen sulfide was examined with more than 100 different pure silica zeolites using atomic-resolution gr…

A computational study on the adsorption and sensing of gabapentin by pristine and doped B12N12 nanocages.

Gabapentin, one of the widely used antiepileptic drugs in the world, is found in aquatic environments because it cannot be completely removed by wastewater treatment techniques. Especially in the recent years, its accumulation in the aquatic environment has caused increasing concerns due to its toxic effects. For this reason, elimination and/or sensing of gabapentin from the water environment is necessitated. In the light of this, this context investigates a suitable nanomaterial by using Density Functional Theory. Within this study, the adsorption performance of XB11N12 (X: B, C, Al, Si, Ga) …

Mass production of cation-exchange cryogels and their chromatographic adsorption performance for bioseparation.

The preparation of cryogels with enhanced protein adsorption capabilities holds significant promise in bioseparation. The challenge of industrializing cryogels lies in achieving efficient large-scale production while maintaining controllable performance characteristics. In this work, 200 of poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) monolithic cryogels were mass-produced per batch by cryo-polymerization. Subsequently, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPSA) was employed as the functional monomer and the cation-exchange pHEMA-AMPSA cryogel discs were successfully prepared by monolit…

Experiment and analysis on the heterogeneity of CO2 adsorption-transport by microrocks in coal matrix.

In order to study gas adsorption performance effected by micro-rock in coal matrix, dual energy X-ray CT was used to calculate the density change of coal core before and after gas injection, which can obtain the CO2 concentration (adsorption amount) in coal core, and reveal the uneven characteristics of CO2 adsorption by minerals. The research results show that coal core in the region where minerals exist has a higher density, while the density of the coal matrix is smaller. Regions with higher coal density (more minerals) have weaker adsorption capacity for CO2. The CO2 concentration in coal …

DFT studies on effects of aminopropyl modification on CO2 adsorption properties of cellulose.

CO2 emission from fossil fuel combustion is still the main cause of greenhouse effect, designing CO2 solid adsorbents with high selective adsorbability remains challenging. In this study, cellulose nanofibers were modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) for revealing the adsorption mechanism of CO2 by APTES modified cellulose aerogel. Based on Density Function Theory(DFT), it was calculated that the adsorption configurations, adsorption energy, and partial density of states of CO2 on the pristine and modified surfaces, which revealed at the atomic level the mechanism influenced by the…

[Effects of By-products of Co-pyrolysis on Biochar for Benzene Vapor Adsorption Performance].

To explore the effects of the components in the raw materials and by-products of co-pyrolysis on the physicochemical properties of biochar, rice husk (RH, which has a high percentage of lignin and a low content of N) and sawdust (SD, which has a high percentage of both cellulose and N) were used as typical raw materials to prepare co-pyrolysis biochar. The benzene vapor adsorption performance of the obtained biochar was then tested on a fixed-bed device. At the same time, the by-product components generated during pyrolysis were analyzed using thermogravimetric (TG), scanning electron microsco…

The influence of surface chemistry of activated carbons on adsorption and freezing/melting processes.

In this work, the adsorption and freezing/melting processes on activated carbons of different chemical nature (different concentrations of oxygen surface groups) were investigated. The role of solvents (cyclohexane and water) in the adsorption of three benzene derivatives - phenol (P), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and nitrobenzene (NB) - was examined. To understand the mechanism of adsorbent-adsorbate-solvent interactions better thermal analysis (TA) coupled with quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) was applied. The water freezing/melting effects of chemically and thermally modified activated carbons i…

Effect of PEGylation on the Adsorption and Binding Strength of Plasma Proteins to Nanoparticle Surfaces.

The adsorption of plasma proteins (human serum albumin, immunoglobulin γ-1, apolipoproteins A-I and E-III) onto polystyrene surfaces grafted with polyethylene glycol (PEG) at different grafting densities is simulated using an all-atom PEG model validated by comparing the conformations of isolated PEG chains with previous simulation and theoretical values. At high PEG density, the grafted PEG chains extend like brushes, while at low density, they significantly adsorb to the surface due to electrostatic attraction between polystyrene amines and PEG oxygens, forming a PEG layer much thinner than …

Simulation study of the effect of OGs on the adsorption of formaldehyde on modified activated carbon.

CONTEXT: To explore the impact of OGs (OGs) on formaldehyde (HCHO) adsorption by modified activated carbon, this paper studied the influence of OGs on HCHO adsorption characteristics, varying the groups including ester, carboxyl, and hydroxyl. Employing density functional theory (DFT), the effects of various OGs on the structure of N-doped activated carbon through GGA-PBE exchange-correlation functionals by Materials Studio combined with Gaussian software. The types of weak interactions during the adsorption process were calculated by RDG, elucidating the mechanism through which the three OGs …

Decreased solubility and increased adsorptivity of a biotinylated humanized anti-cocaine mAb.

Biotinylation of proteins, including antibodies, is a very useful and important modification for a variety of biochemical characterizations, including anti-drug antibody (ADA) assays used to detect antibodies raised against therapeutic antibodies. We assessed different degrees of biotin labeling of an anti-cocaine mAb currently under development for treating cocaine use disorder. We noted that higher levels of biotin labeling dramatically decreased mAb solubility, and increased the tendency to bind to surfaces, complicating characterization of the biotinylated antibody. Specifically, in phosph

In Vitro Study on Combined Effect of Drugs for Hyperphosphatemia on Phosphorus Adsorption Capacity.

Phosphorus binders are often used in combination to produce synergistic effects. However, the synergistic effect may be affected by the change in pH or concomitant drugs. Nonetheless, the data on the adsorption capacities of these binders when used in combination with other binders are limited. In this study, we evaluated the adsorption capacity of phosphorus binders when used in combination. Precipitated calcium carbonate (CC), ferric citrate hydrate (FC), lanthanum carbonate hydrate (LC), and sucroferric oxyhydroxide (SO) were used as phosphorus binders. SO showed high adsorption capacity in…
