The synthesis and evaluation of thiolated alginate as the barrier to block nutrient absorption on small intestine for body-weight control.

Obesity is the most common health concern all over the world. However, till now, there is no promising way to manage obesity or body-weight control. The aim of the study is to develop an edible gel as a health supplement that temporarily attaches to the mucus of the intestines, forming an absorption barrier to block the nutrients. We modify the alginate with the thiol group as thiolated alginate (TA) that may stay on the mucosa layer for a much longer time to reduce nutrient absorption. In this study, the TA is synthesized successfully and proved a good mucosal adhesion to serve as a barrier f

Gelatin methacryloyl-alginate core-shell microcapsules as efficient delivery platforms for prevascularized microtissues in endodontic regeneration.

Combined injectable cell-laden microspheres and angiogenesis approaches are promising for functional vascularized endodontic regeneration. However, advanced microsphere designs and production techniques that benefit practical applications are rarely developed. Herein, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-alginate core-shell microcapsules were fabricated to co-encapsulate human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) based on a coaxial electrostatic microdroplet technique. This technique enables high-throughput production, convenient collection, and minimal m

Fabrication of CuO nanoparticles composite ε-polylysine-alginate nanogel for high-efficiency management of Alternaria alternate.

Although ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PL) has a good potential as a green fungicide, high concentration is usually required during its controlling of plant disease. On the other hand, same problems also appeared in the study of CuONP based nano pesticides. In this manuscript, a new composite alginate nanogel (ALGNP) that containing CuONP and ε-PL was fabricated via in situ reduction of CuONP in nanogel and ε-PL surface coating. Based on the chelation of amide bond of ε-PL and Cu2+ released by CuONP, the synergy effect between Cu2+ and ε-PL layer of the nanogel make the nanogel (CuONP@ALGNP@PL) performed

Development and systematic characterization of GelMA/alginate/PEGDMA/xanthan gum hydrogel bioink system for extrusion bioprinting.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/alginate-based hydrogels have shown great promise in bioprinting, but their printability is limited at room temperature. In this paper, we present our development of a room temperature printable hydrogel bioink by introducing polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and xanthan gum into the GelMA/alginate system. The inclusion of PEGDMA facilitates tuning of the hydrogel's mechanical property, while xanthan gum improves the viscosity of the hydrogel system and allows easy extrusion at room temperature. To fine-tune the mechanical and degradation properties, meth

Application of chitosan- and alginate-modified biochars in promoting the resistance to paddy soil acidification and immobilization of soil cadmium.

To develop more green, practical and efficient biochar amendments for acidic soils, chitosan-modified biochar (CRB) and alginate-modified biochar (ARB) were prepared, and their effects on promoting soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC) and immobilizing cadmium (Cd) in the paddy soils were investigated through indoor incubation experiments. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Boehm titration indicated that the introduction of chitosan and sodium alginate effectively amplified the functional groups of the biochar, and improved acid buffering capacity of the biochar. Since ther

Alginate microencapsulation of an attenuated O-antigen mutant of Francisella tularensis LVS as a model for a vaccine delivery vehicle.

Francisella tularensis is the etiologic agent of tularemia and a Tier I Select Agent. Subspecies tularensis (Type A) is the most virulent of the four subspecies and inhalation of as few as 10 cells can cause severe disease in humans. Due to its niche as a facultative intracellular pathogen, a successful tularemia vaccine must induce a robust cellular immune response, which is best achieved by a live, attenuated strain. F. tularensis strains lacking lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen are highly attenuated, but do not persist in the host long enough to induce protective immunity. Increasing the

Electrosprayed chitosan-coated alginate-pectin beads as potential system for colon-targeted delivery of ellagic acid.

BACKGROUND: Ellagic acid (EA), a potent dietary antioxidant, has limited bioavailability owing to its rapid absorption in the stomach and small intestine, and EA is transformed to more bioavailable compounds - urolithins - in the colon. An encapsulation system that sustains the release of EA in the gastrointestinal system and delivers more EA into the colon could improve the oral bioavailability of EA. Electrosprayed EA-loaded alginate-pectin beads were produced and coated with low- (LC) and high-molecular-weight chitosan (HC). The EA release from uncoated and coated beads under simulated gast

Thermo-responsive injectable naringin-loaded hydrogel polymerised sodium alginate/bioglass delivery for articular cartilage.

In the human body, joint cartilage is of great importance. It has long been a big therapeutic problem to fix joint cartilage lesions as it appears due to different conditions. Recent stories have shown that the cartilage replacement process must delay the extracellular (ECM) cartilage deterioration and modulate the host's inflammation response. For the reconstruction of the articular cartilage, drug-loaded injectable hydrogels were developed. This hydrogel could retain the chondrocyte phenotype, but the host's inflammatory reaction could also be controlled. The bioglass (BG)/sodium alginate (S

Development, characterization and sterilisation of Nanocellulose-alginate-(hyaluronic acid)- bioinks and 3D bioprinted scaffolds for tissue engineering.

3D-bioprinting is an emerging technology of high potential in tissue engineering (TE), since it shows effective control over scaffold fabrication and cell distribution. Biopolymers such as alginate (Alg), nanofibrillated cellulose (NC) and hyaluronic acid (HA) offer excellent characteristics for use as bioinks due to their excellent biocompatibility and rheological properties. Cell incorporation into the bioink requires sterilisation assurance, and autoclave, β-radiation and γ-radiation are widely used sterilisation techniques in biomedicine; however, their use in 3D-bioprinting for bioinks st

Simultaneous incorporation of PTH(1-34) and nano-hydroxyapatite into Chitosan/Alginate Hydrogels for efficient bone regeneration.

Tissue regeneration based on the utilization of artificial soft materials is considered a promising treatment for bone-related diseases. Here, we report cranial bone regeneration promoted by hydrogels that contain parathyroid hormone (PTH) peptide PTH(1-34) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP). A combination of the positively charged natural polymer chitosan (CS) and negatively charged sodium alginate led to the formation of hydrogels with porous structures, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. Rheological characterizations revealed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogels were almost ma

Physical Properties, Chemical Analysis, and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Response of New Polylactide/Alginate/Copper Composite Materials.

In recent years, due to an expansion of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, there has been growing interest in biodegradable and antibacterial polymers that can be used in selected biomedical applications. The present work describes the synthesis of antimicrobial polylactide-copper alginate (PLA-ALG-Cu2+) composite fibers and their characterization. The composites were prepared by immersing PLA fibers in aqueous solution of sodium alginate, followed by ionic cross-linking of alginate chains within the polylactide fibers with Cu(II) ions to yield PLA-ALG-Cu2+ composite fibers. The composites,

Binder-free CuS/ZnS/sodium alginate/rGO nanocomposite hydrogel electrodes for enhanced performance supercapacitors.

CuS/ZnS/sodium alginate/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (CZSrG) were prepared by physical crosslinking followed by one-step reduction and were justified as green binder-free hydrogel high-capacitance electrodes. The physical crosslinking was realized simply through the hydrogen-bond interaction between sodium alginate (SA) and graphene oxide (GO), avoiding the usage of traditional Ca2+ crosslinking agent. The hydrogel structure made of CZSrG possessed the most beneficial effect of avoiding large volume change and increasing cycle stability for supercapacitors. When used as electrode, the

Antibacterial alginate/nano-hydroxyapatite composites for bone tissue engineering: Assessment of their bioactivity, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity.

Bone substitute materials based on bioceramics and polymers have evolved shifting from a passive role where they are merely accepted by the body; to an active role, where they respond to particular environmental conditions or to different types of cues generating suitable integration (osseointegration for this case) inside the host tissue. In this work, two types of composite materials based on a bioceramic (synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite, HA) and a biopolymer (sodium alginate, ALG) have been designed and assessed for promoting the bone regeneration. These materials were loaded with ciprofloxac

Injectable basic fibroblast growth factor-loaded alginate/hyaluronic acid hydrogel for rejuvenation of geriatric larynx.

Increase in the geriatric population has led to an increase in the number of elderly patients with laryngeal atrophy and dysfunction. Symptoms of voice change, dysphagia, and aspiration pneumonia negatively influence patient's health status, quality of life, and life span. Injection laryngoplasty used to treat laryngeal dysfunctions does not recover intrinsic functions of the larynx. Thus, we fabricated an injectable basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-loaded alginate (ALG)/hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel for inducing rejuvenation of geriatric laryngeal muscles. Optimal in situ-forming bFGF-lo

In-situ synthesis of acylated sodium alginate-g-(tetrahydrofuran5-b-polyisobutylene) terpolymer/Ag-NPs nanocomposites.

Sodium alginate (SA) is a marine-derived biocompatible polysaccharide with huge reserves and polyisobutylene (PIB) is a saturated elastomer with gas barrier property, bio-inertness, and biocompatibility. Herein, we developed the biomass-based ASA-g-(THF5-b-PIB) graft copolymer/Ag (3-11 nm, 0.7-3.8%) nanocomposites formed in-situ via combination of transition of terminal groups in PIB chains with grafting-onto method. The above graft copolymers exhibit microphase separation by self-assembly for the difference in chemical structure from backbone and branches and annealing process as well. The cr

Calcium alginate entrapped Eupatorium adenophorum Sprengel stems powder for chromium(VI) biosorption in aqueous mediums.

A novel biosorbent, Eupatorium adenophorum Sprengel-alginate beads was used for chromium(VI) biosorption from aqueous solutions. Biosorption process was optimized at pH 2.0, biomass concentration 1.0 g/L, contact time 60 min, and temperature 30 oC respectively. Maximum uptake capacity of Cr(VI) was calculated at 28.011 mg/g. It was found that the overall biosorption process was best described by pseudo second-order kinetics with high correlation coefficient values. Intraparticle diffusion model suggested that Cr(VI) biosorption may proceed within multiple steps. Data obtained from the batch st
