Ridge Alterations following Socket Preservation Using a Collagen Membrane in Dogs.

BACKGROUND: The healing process following tooth extraction results in alveolar ridge resorption. The dimensional changes may complicate the subsequent implant procedure. Socket preservation using absorbable collagen membranes or a combination of membranes with calcium phosphate cement (CPC) particles might ensure that the alveolar ridge retains a suitable morphology for implant placement. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality and quantity of new bone regenerated after application of either collagen membranes alone covering the sockets or a combination of membranes with CPC particles added into t

Timing of alveolar bone surgery as a predictor of guided bone regeneration success: results of a retrospective cohort study.

The physiological condition of bone prior to regenerative procedures has received little attention, with concerns more often related to technical and biomaterial issues. The primary aim of the study was to test whether pathophysiological changes in bone following tooth extractions or other alveolar bone surgery have an additional impact on bone growth in guided bone regeneration (GBR) with collagen membranes. A total of 33 consecutive patients with vertical and horizontal atrophy of the alveolar ridges, comprising 70 dental sites, treated with staged GBR using collagen membranes and a resorbab

Overbuilding techniques for thin buccal bone in immediate implant placement: an experimental study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Tooth extraction often leads to remodeling and shrinkage of the alveolar crest, particularly on the buccal side. This study aimed to assess the impact of grafting procedures on augmenting a thin buccal alveolar bone following tooth extraction and immediate implant placement. METHODS: The third mandibular premolar was bilaterally extracted in dogs, and implants were immediately placed into the distal sockets. At the test sites, the buccal bone wall was augmented with a xenograft, while both test and control sites were covered with a collagen membrane. After three months, biopsies w

Methods to treat the edentulous posterior maxilla: implants with sinus grafting.

Prosthetic rehabilitation of the edentulous posterior maxilla with implant-supported prostheses frequently presents a challenge for the oral surgeon because of the lack of bone due to alveolar ridge resorption or maxillary sinus pneumatization. To overcome these problems, different solutions were proposed over the years, such as the use of short implants or tilted implants (including zygoma implants), with the aim of avoiding maxillary sinus floor elevation. Both of these techniques have advantages and disadvantages that should be evaluated carefully to choose the most appropriate treatment. Z

A collagenated porcine bone substitute for augmentation at Neoss implant sites: a prospective 1-year multicenter case series study with histology.

BACKGROUND: The presence of localized defects and/or small amounts of bone below the maxillary sinus is a common finding, which may compromise implant placement. There is therefore a need for predictable techniques for bone augmentation in such situations. PURPOSE: The study aims to clinically and histologically evaluate a porcine bone (PB) substitute used for augmentation of the alveolar crest or the maxillary sinus floor prior to or in conjunction with implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients were treated with a porcine bone substitute and barrier membranes (OsteoBiol, T

Clinical and patient-reported outcomes of tissue engineering strategies for periodontal and peri-implant reconstruction.

Scientific advancements in biomaterials, cellular therapies, and growth factors have brought new therapeutic options for periodontal and peri-implant reconstructive procedures. These tissue engineering strategies involve the enrichment of scaffolds with living cells or signaling molecules and aim at mimicking the cascades of wound healing events and the clinical outcomes of conventional autogenous grafts, without the need for donor tissue. Several tissue engineering strategies have been explored over the years for a variety of clinical scenarios, including periodontal regeneration, treatment o

Particulate Coral Hydroxyapatite Sheltered by Titanium Mesh for Localized Alveolar Rehabilitation After Onlay Graft Failure: A Case Report.

Reconstruction of bone loss in the alveolar ridge has long been challenging. Autologous bone grafts are considered as the "golden standard," while little research has focused on how to repair pronounced alveolar bone defects after autologous bone graft failure. The aim of this study was to detail a method based on the titanium mesh technique coupled with particulate coral hydroxyapatite to solve the onlay graft failure. With bone deficiency in the No. 11 and No. 24-25 regions, we harvested 2 autologous bone blocks for reconstruction. Two weeks after transplantation, the graft in the No. 11 reg

Mandibular Interforaminal Ridge Reorientation for Osteogenic Reinforcement for Knife-Edge and Hourglass Mandibles in the Anterior Region: A Technical Note.

Severely narrow interforaminal mandibular ridges with knife-edge or hourglass morphology may compromise implant placement despite preserved vertical height. This technical note describes the Mandibular Interforaminal Ridge Reorientation for Osteogenic Reinforcement technique, a same-site approach in which a crestal cortical segment is mobilized and reoriented outward to create a contained tunnel for particulate grafting under a titanium-reinforced dense polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. The surgical workflow includes controlled osteotomies, stabilization of the mirrored segment, tunnel graftin
