Quality of life during occlusion therapy for amblyopia from the perspective of the children and from that of their parents, as proxy.

BACKGROUND: Parents pity their amblyopic child when they think that they suffer from occlusion therapy. We measured health-related quality of life during occlusion therapy. METHODS: We developed the Amblyopia Parents and Children Occlusion Questionnaire (APCOQ). It was designed by a focus group of patients, orthoptists and ophthalmologists and consisted of twelve items concerning skin contact of patch, activities, contact with other children, emotions and awareness of necessity to patch. Parents filled out the Proxy Version shortly before the Child Version was obtained from their child. Child…

Orienting of covert attention by neutral and emotional gaze cues appears to be unaffected by mild to moderate amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of vision associated with higher-order visual attention deficits. We explored whether amblyopia affects the orienting of covert spatial attention by measuring the magnitude of the gaze cueing effect from emotional faces. Gaze and emotion cues are key components of social attention. Participants with normal vision (n = 30), anisometropic (n = 7) or strabismic/mixed (n = 5) amblyopia performed a cued peripheral target detection task under monocular and binocular viewing conditions. The cue consisted of a centrally presented face with left or right gaze (50% …

Amblyopia due to intermediate uveitis as the presenting symptom of Crohn's disease in a 6-year-old boy.

A 6-year-old boy presented with unexplained unilateral low visual acuity. Best-corrected visual acuity was counting fingers in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed intermediate uveitis, with moderate vitritis, snowballs, and snowbanking. Infectious and noninfectious conditions known to be associated with intermediate uveitis were excluded. Vitreous inflammation gradually resolved with oral steroids, and amblyopia treatment with left eye patching was advised. Several months later the boy suffered acute monoarthritis and episodes of mucopurulent d…

Studies on visual evoked cortical response by liquid crystal phase difference haploscope: amblyopia and/or strabismus.

Visual evoked cortical potentials induced by alternate stimulation of checkerboard pattern with the use of liquid crystal phase difference haploscope were investigated. The synchronization ratio of brain response was determined both in the group of normal binocularity and in the group with binocularity defect. The synchronization ratio of the group of normal binocularity (N = 30) is 100% at 1 Hz x 2, 98.5% +/- 3.9% at 5 Hz x 2, and 83.7% +/- 15.8% at 10 Hz x 2. On the other hand, in the group with binocularity defect, strabismus without amblyopia shows a reduction of the ratio only at the freq…
