With the aid of the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test and IgG ELISA the antibody profile against E. histolytica in León, Nicaragua was investigated in 562 sera from individuals belonging to various age groups. The highest reactivity was invariably recorded in the age group 6-15 years where 48% were seropositive. Several sera reactive by either one of IHA and IgG ELISA were negative by the other test. In an ongoing study of obscure fevers in Cairo, Egypt which is presently in its 6th year, 12 cases of hepatic amebiasis have been diagnosed. Three were diagnosed during the period 1971-1974. With the introduction of amebic serologic techniques, particularly counterimmunoelectrophoresis, nine additional cases have been diagnosed in 1975-1976. Of 9 patients treated with metronidazole 6 were rapidly cured, 2 had a recurrence of fever necessitating surgical drainage of the abscess, and 1 died suddenly on the 3rd day of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Amebiasis is a worldwide health problem that mainly affects developing countries. Invasive amebiasis tends to develop complications, and among these, perforation of the colon, although infrequent (1.9-9.1%), is the most lethal. The increase in immigration to the United States is associated with diseases, such as amebiasis, that are endemic to developing countries. We retrospectively reviewed 49 public-hospital patients with hepatic amebiasis occurring between 1985 and 1995.
