Internal jugular vein reflux in patients with transient global amnesia: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

Our aim was to quantitatively evaluate the role of internal jugular venous reflux (IJVR) in transient global amnesia (TGA). Meta-analysis of case-control studies was conducted using Medline, Current contents connect, ISI Web of Knowledge, Biological abstracts and Scopus, plus citations of selected studies. We performed sensitivity and subgroup analyses to assess the effect of methods of IJVR determination, blinding of studies, and definition of IJVR on the results. Seven studies were included in the first meta-analysis which investigated the frequency of IJVR in 312 patients and 261 controls.

Transient global amnesia-like episode due to mistaken intake of zolpidem: drug safety concern in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic insomnia is a common phenomenon among the elderly. Inaccurate handling and use of hypnotics in the elderly has become an important issue in patient safety. Older people who self-medicate often have a high risk for medication errors. METHODS AND RESULTS: We described here the case of a 65-year-old woman who experienced recurrent transient anterograde amnesia, anxiety, bewilderment, and repetitive questioning that lasted for 2 to 3 hours after erroneously taking zolpidem. This mistake was due to the similarity in appearance between zolpidem and her newly prescribed anticholes

Selective affection of hippocampal CA-1 neurons in patients with transient global amnesia without long-term sequelae.

The aetiology, pathomechanisms and anatomical correlates of transient global amnesia (TGA) still remain obscure. Recently, focal MR-signal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) changes in the hippocampus have been described in patients with TGA, but the exact localization, long term outcome and pathophysiological nature of these lesions still remain unknown. The topography and time course of hippocampal DWI lesions in 41 TGA patients was studied using serial 3 T high-resolution MR-imaging and correlated to clinical and neuropsychometric results. Of these, 29 patients showed 36 DWI lesions with corr

Evolution of temporal lobe hypoperfusion in transient global amnesia: a serial single photon emission computed tomography study.

Previous functional neuroimaging studies performed during transient global amnesia (TGA) have not answered the central question regarding the etiology of TGA, namely: whether the observed hypoperfusion in the mesial temporal lobe structures reflects a primarily ischemic process or whether it represents a secondary phenomenon resulting from locally decreased metabolism. The authors performed Tc 99-m-bicisate brain single photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) scanning in a 66-year-old man during an episode of TGA, 24 hours after the episode and 3 months after the episode. To the authors' k

Transient global amnesia and cortical blindness after vertebral angiography: further evidence for the role of arterial spasm.

We describe a series of six patients who experienced severe retrograde amnesia (five cases) or cortical blindness (one case) during selective vertebral angiography. All angiograms were obtained with the same nonionic contrast medium. Analysis of the contrast batch demonstrated no abnormalities, but investigation of the angiographic suite revealed a faulty contrast warming cabinet resulting in injection of contrast material above body temperature. The warming cabinet was withdrawn, and the complication has not recurred. We believe that these symptoms reflect ischemia caused by vertebral arteria

Regional cerebral blood flow and metabolism in patients with transient global amnesia: a positron emission tomography study.

In four patients who experienced transient global amnesia (TGA), clinical features and neuroradiological findings including positron emission tomography (PET) were studied within three months of the episodes, and compared with those in seven cases with cerebral transient ischaemic attacks (TIA). None of TGA patients had a previous history or significant risk factors for the cerebrovascular diseases. Their electroencephalogram, brain CT and angiogram for the head and neck were almost normal. PET study showed better preserved cerebral blood flow and oxygen metabolism in each area of the brain in

Transient Global Amnesia After Screening Esophagogastroduodenoscopy: Incidence and Risk Factors in a 20-Year Single-Center Cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Transient global amnesia (TGA) after esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) has been described only in case reports. Because sudden-onset amnesia can mimic stroke and other acute central nervous system disorders, TGA requires careful differentiation in the acute setting, and clinicians need to be familiar with this condition. We estimated its incidence after screening EGD and identified associated risk factors in a large single-center cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 420,979 screening EGDs at a single health checkup center (April 2005-March 2025). All EGDs were perfo

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA): Sex-Specific Differences in Blood Pressure and Cerebral Microangiopathy in Patients with TGA.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is defined by an acute memory disturbance of unclear aetiology for a period of less than 24 h. Observed psychological, neuroanatomical and hormonal differences between the sexes in episodic memory suggest sex-specific differences in memory disorders such as TGA. The aim of this study was to determine sex-specific differences in cardiovascular risk profiles, recurrences and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In total, 372 hospitalised TGA patients between 01/2011 and 10/2021 were retrospectively analysed. Comparisons were made between female and male TGA patients a

The Long-Term Risk of Dementia after Transient Global Amnesia: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of larger anterograde and milder retrograde amnesia that lasts up to 24 h. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the long-term risk of dementia up to 8 years in subjects with TGA. METHOD: We conducted a control cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research database from 2005 to 2012 with an 8-year follow-up period. From all potential participants >18 years of age without dementia history, we identified TGA subjects and non-TGA controls with age, gender and comorbidities matche

A controlled Valsalva Maneuver causes neither Diffusion-Positive Hippocampal Lesions nor Clinical Symptoms after Transient Global Amnesia.

Valsalva maneuver (VM) precedes frequently transient global amnesia (TGA) and up to 84% of the patients with TGA present hippocampal diffusion-weighted imaging-positive (DWI+) lesions on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We studied 20 patients with TGA and hippocampal DWI+ lesions. Median age (range) of the patients was 67 (57-80) years and 55% were women. TGA had been preceded by a VM-associated activity in 14 patients (70%), and brain MRI had been performed at a median (range) of 47.5 (42-79) h after TGA. These patients underwent a second MRI after a controlled-induced VM at least 3 mo

[Neuroimaging of a 39-year-old woman with transient global amnesia accompanied by cerebral venous reflow abnormalities].

We present a 39-year-old woman with transient global amnesia (TGA) who showed sudden onset amnesia immediately following sexual intercourse after taking a bath. Her amnesia resolved within 6 hours. Three-Tesla (3T) diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) taken 80 hours after the onset revealed hyperintense spots in the CA1 subfields of the bilateral hippocampi. No abnormalities were noted in 3T DWI, T(2) weighted imaging (T(2) WI) and fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) at 3 weeks after the onset. She had no cardiovascular diseases. Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) revea

What does transient global amnesia really mean? Review of the literature and thorough study of 142 cases.

Since the first reports of transient global amnesia (TGA) were published in 1956, several neuropsychological and functional imaging studies have shed light on different aspects of this neurological syndrome. By establishing diagnostic criteria, Hodges and Warlow (1990b) have made it far easier to identify clinical TGA-related features. However, no comprehensive survey has been yet carried out in order to validate their criteria/findings or provide information about previously unknown features. In the present paper, (i) we review the literature published since Hodges and Warlow's study and seek

Magnetic resonance imaging changes in a patient with migraine attack and transient global amnesia after cardiac catheterization.

The presence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities in patients with transient global amnesia has been an interesting phenomenologic finding. Several theories surround the occurrence of this syndrome, but little is known about its true physiopathology. We present a case of transient global amnesia after cardiac catheterization associated with migraine headache and MRI changes compatible with an ischemic insult. A discussion on potential explanations for this finding is made, as well as a review of the pertinent literature.

Neurosyphilis showing transient global amnesia-like attacks and magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities mainly in the limbic system.

We report a case of neurosyphilis with transient global amnesia (TGA)-like attacks on the first presentation. MRI abnormalities in bilateral limbic systems, including a few lesions in the basal ganglia and thalamus, were identified. Depression and dementia became apparent, accompanied by a high treponemal antibody titer and mild cortical atrophy. Antisyphilitic therapy brought about mild improvement, and the MRI abnormalities decreased.

Long-term outcome in transient global amnesia patients with and without focal hyperintensities in the CA1 region of the hippocampus.

Focal hippocampal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesion patterns are detected in transient global amnesia (TGA) patients in different frequency. It has been speculated that acute diffusion restrictions are associated with a worse outcome. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of acute DWI lesions on the cognitive long-term outcome in TGA patients. Seventeen otherwise healthy patients with the clinical syndrome of TGA, who had MRI investigations on admission as well as 1 day later, were investigated with a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery 2 years later. Acute hippocampal DWI lesi

Transient Global Amnesia as a Rare Consequence of Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography at an Ambulatory Neurosurgery Center: A Case Report.

Although invasive, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is considered a relatively safe procedure and remains the gold standard for cerebrovascular imaging. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a self-limited episode of sudden-onset anterograde amnesia that resolves spontaneously within 24 hours. We report a rare occurrence of TGA after diagnostic DSA. A 62-year-old man presented for an angiogram performed under conscious sedation for the diagnosis of a suspected cavernous internal carotid artery aneurysm. Although the DSA revealed normal anatomy, the patient experienced self-resolving memory im

Acute neurological disease as a trigger or co-occurrence of transient global amnesia: a case series and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) represents a benign neurological syndrome of unknown pathophysiology, often accompanied by vanishing hippocampal punctate lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (hippocampal punctate diffusion lesion, HPDL). The recent literature suggests that TGA may be triggered by acute neurological conditions. OBJECTIVE: To study patients with TGA triggered by an acute neurological disease. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients from two neurology centres with TGA (with or without HPDL) in whom an acute neurological condition could be identified as trigger
