Spatial frequency domain Mueller matrix imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Mueller matrix polarimetry (MMP) and spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) are wide-field optical imaging modalities that differentiate tissue primarily by structure alignment and photon transport coefficient, respectively. Because these effects can be related, combining MMP and SFDI may enhance tissue differentiation beyond the capability of each modality alone. AIM: An instrument was developed to combine MMP and SFDI with the goal of testing whether it enhances contrast of features in reflection mode. APPROACH: The instrument was constructed using liquid crystal elements fo

Supramolecular Interlocking Produces Mechanically Anisotropic, Robust, and Tough Biomimetic Ionogels.

Ionogels have garnered significant attention in various cutting-edge fields due to their tunable mechanical properties and remarkable multifunctionality. However, current ionogels still struggle to achieve a combination of mechanical robustness and tissue-like anisotropy, hindering their application in next-generation intelligent biomimetic materials. Inspired by the anisotropic structure of tendons, we have embedded parallel-aligned rigid fiber bundles within a flexible ionogel to establish a tight interfacial bonding through supramolecular interlocking. This design enables the dispersion of …

Understanding the synergistic interaction between a 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivative and amphotericin B using spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

We present a comprehensive spectroscopic study supported by theoretical quantum chemical calculations conducted on a molecular system (4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (C1) and the antibiotic Amphotericin B (AmB)) that exhibits highly synergistic properties. We previously reported the strong synergism of this molecular system and now wish to present related stationary measurements of UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, and fluorescence anisotropy in a polar, aprotic solvent (DMSO and a PBS buffer), followed by time-resolved fluorescence intensity and anisotropy decay studies usi…

Spontaneous valley polarization and valley-nonequilibrium quantum anomalous Hall effect in Janus monolayer ScBrI.

Topology and ferrovalley (FV) are two essential concepts in emerging device applications and the fundamental research field. To date, releva … noting that there are no particular valley polarization and VQAHE states for in-plane (IP) magnetic anisotropy. By obtaining the real magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) under different strains, due to spontaneous valley polarization, intrinsic out-of-plane (OOP) magnetic anisotropy, a chiral edge state, and a unit Chern number, the VQAHE can reliably appear be …

Anisotropic Mechanical Properties of Orthorhombic SiP2 Monolayer: A First-Principles Study.

In recent years, the two-dimensional (2D) orthorhombic SiP2 flake has been peeled off successfully by micromechanical exfoliation and it exhibits an excellent performance in photodetection. In this paper, we investigated the mechanical properties and the origin of its anisotropy in an orthorhombic SiP2 monolayer through first-principles calculations, which can provide a theoretical basis for utilizing and tailoring the physical properties of a 2D orthorhombic SiP2 in the future. We found that the Young's modulus is up to 113.36 N/m along the a direction, while the smallest value is only 17.46 …

Arterial stiffness and white matter integrity in the elderly: A diffusion tensor and magnetization transfer imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The stiffness of large arteries and increased pulsatility can have an impact on the brain white matter (WM) microstructure, however those mechanisms are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between central artery stiffness, axonal and myelin integrity in 54 cognitively unimpaired elderly subjects (65-75 years old). METHODS: The neuronal fiber integrity of brain WM was assessed using diffusion tensor metrics and magnetization transfer imaging as measures of axonal organization (Fractional anisotropy, Radial diffusivity) and s…

The effect of injury timing on white matter changes in the corpus callosum following unilateral brain injury.

Motor impairments following unilateral brain injuries may be related to changes in the corpus callosum. The purpose of this study was to determine if the corpus callosum is impacted differently in pediatric versus adult hemiplegia. Diffusion tensor imaging was completed on 41 participants (11 pediatric hemiplegia, 10 adult hemiplegia, 10 pediatric control and 10 adult control). Fractional anisotropy values and cross-sectional areas for five regions of the corpus callosum were compared between subject groups. Additionally, the amount of involuntary activity in the paretic elbow was quantified d…

Self-assembly of supramolecular fullerene ribbons via hydrogen-bonding interactions and their impact on fullerene electronic interactions and charge carrier mobility.

The anisotropy of the electronic interactions between fullerenes in crystalline solids was examined using a confocal fluorescence microscope by probing the polarization of the fluorescence emission arising from fullerene excimer-like emitting states. Crystals of C(60) obtained by vacuum-sublimation or from chloroform solution exhibited no or little polarization (p = 0 or 0.11, respectively), as expected from the high symmetry of the C(60) fcc lattice or the low degree of anisotropy induced by included solvent molecules. The use of hydrogen-bonding to supramolecularly control interfullerene ele…

Pattern of normal age-related regional differences in white matter microstructure is modified by vascular risk.

Even successful aging is associated with regional brain shrinkage and deterioration of the cerebral white matter. Aging also brings about an increase in vascular risk, and vascular impairment may be a potential mechanism behind the observed patterns of aging. The goals of this study were to characterize the normal age differences in white matter integrity in several brain regions across the adult life span and to assess the modifying effect of vascular risk on the observed pattern of regional white matter integrity. We estimated fractional anisotropy and diffusivity of white matter in nine cer…

Soft Magnetic Amorphous Microwires for Stress and Temperature Sensory Applications.

Amorphous ferromagnetic materials in the form of microwires are of interest for the development of various sensors. This paper analyzes and argues for the use of microwires of two basic compositions of Co71Fe5B11Si10Cr3 and Fe3.9(4.9)Co64.82B10.2Si12Cr9(8)Mo0.08 as stress/strain and temperature sensors, respectively. The following properties make them suitable for innovative applications: miniature dimensions, small coercivity, low anisotropy and magnetostriction, tunable magnetic structure, magnetic anisotropy, and Curie temperature by annealing. For example, these sensors can be used for tes…

Measurements of water diffusion and T1 values in peritumoural oedematous brain.

Using quantitative MR imaging, values for the mean water diffusivity (<D>), the diffusion anisotropy and the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) were measured for tumour, oedematous and normal brain in a group of treatment-naive patients with high-grade glioma and low-grade meningioma. The mean values of <D> and T1 for enhancing tumour and oedematous brain were significantly higher in high-grade glioma than meningioma, while the diffusion anisotropy was reduced. Values of <D> and T1 were also positively correlated in oedematous brain in both pathologies. There was, however, no clear evidence of …

Changes in water diffusion due to Wallerian degeneration in peripheral nerve.

The authors report NMR measurements of the changes in water diffusion brought about by in vivo Wallerian degeneration due to either crush- or tie-injuries in the sciatic nerve of the frog. Using a pulsed-gradient spin-echo sequence with a diffusion measurement time of 28 ms, the degree of diffusion coefficient anisotropy ¿D(longitudinal)/D(transverse)¿ 4 weeks after injury in both crush- and tie-injured nerves (2.3 +/- 0.4 and 1.7 +/- 0.1, respectively) is significantly less than in normal frog sciatic nerve (3.9 +/- 0.4). The decrease of anisotropy in the degenerated nerves is due to both a d…

Néel domain walls with bistable chirality in a perpendicularly magnetized ferrimagnetic insulator.

Field-free spin-orbit torque-driven domain wall motion in magnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) requires the domain walls to have Néel character. Conventionally, Néel domain walls are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in ultrathin films. Here, in a europium iron garnet thin film with PMA and an additional uniaxial in-plane anisotropy, we demonstrate two bistable Néel domain wall states in the absence of DMI, and the capability to toggle the wall states with an in-plane field pulse and consequently their directions of motion under a current pul…

Janus monolayer ScXY (X≠Y = Cl, Br and I) for piezoelectric and valleytronic application: a first-principle prediction.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism, piezoelectricity and valley in two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial to advance multifunctional electronic technologies. Here, Janus ScXY (X≠Y = Cl, Br and I) monolayers are predicted to be piezoelectric ferromagnetic semiconductors with dynamical, mechanical and thermal stabilities. They all show an in-plane easy axis of magnetization by calculating magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) including magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and magnetic shape anisotropy energy. The MAE results show that they intrinsically have no spontaneous valley polarization. The pred…

Compensatory Shift of Subcallosal Area and Paraterminal Gyrus White Matter Parameters on DTI in Patients with Alzheimer Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer disease is traditionally conceptualized as a disease of brain gray matter, however, studies with diffusion tensor imaging have demonstrated that Alzheimer disease also involves alterations in white matter integrity. We measured number of tracts, tracts length, tract volume, quantitative anisotropy and general fractional anisotropy of neuronal tracts in subcallosal area, paraterminal gyrus and fornix in patients with Alzheimer disease and healthy age-matched controls. Our hypothesis was that patients with Alzheimer disease should exhibit decrease in the integrity of these w…
