Pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents poses a continuing hazard to obstetrical patients, resulting in needless loss of life in previously … anaesthesia for vaginal and caesarean delivery. 4. Administration of small doses of non-particulate antacids to obstetrical patients before anaesthesia. 5. Possible preoperative use of cimetidine or metoclopramide, or both.

Significant gastrointestinal hemorrhage occurred in 20% (20) of the patients in a respiratory intensive care unit. Risk factors significantl … d the use of therapy with either heparin or corticosteroids. Routine prophylactic administration of antacids was associated with a decreased incidence of hemorrhage. The mortality of bleeders was significantly greater than that of nonbleeders.

Usually, swallowing of maternal blood is the cause of bloody vomiting in healthy term newborns. Other reported causes include gastritis, esophagitis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer. We report a newborn girl born by cesarean at 372/7 weeks who had hematemesis on postnatal day 1 and hematochezia on day 2. An erythrocyte transfusion was given on day 3. Gastroscopy performed on day 4 showed multiple gastric ulcers. Antacid treatment was given. On day 12, the newborn had a good general condition and stable vital signs and was discharged. Gastric ulcer needs to be considered as the etiology of h

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is common in the otolaryngologist's office, and a multimodal treatment regimen is employed often. Counseling patients on lifestyle modifications is important. Alkaline water consumption has been recommended as a nonmedical "antacid" for its value in deactivating pepsin, a proteolytic enzyme responsible for laryngeal tissue inflammatory changes in LPR. Alkaline water can be found as premade bottled water, or it can be made at home by titrating regular-pH water with concentrated alkaline drops. We present a patient who mistakenly instilled the alkaline drops into h

Long-time oral intake of magnesium-silicate-containing drugs is thought to be a causative factor inducing silicate urolithiasis. Besides, magnesium seems to play an anti-urolithogenic part in the formation of calcium oxalate stones. We report a recurrent calcium oxalate former who had been treated with magnesium aluminometasilicate antacid for gastric ulcer for approximately 17 years. One of the fragments found during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was identified as 100% silicate. Deposition of silica was also found on other fragments. A large dose of magnesium (given in a part of the d

Nonspecific duodenitis exists as a clinical entity distinct from duodenal ulcer disease. Duodenoscopic findings take two general forms: 1. nodularity and erythema, 2. erosions and friability. Both forms usually tend to improve with time but do not necessarily disappear. Although frequently a mild illness, the hemorrhagic erosive form of duodenitis is a potentially serious complication causing marked gastrointestinal bleeding and should be considered in patients taking aspirin-alcohol or following severe physiologic stress. Lastly, most patients initially seem to respond to anticholinergic, tra

The current therapeutic approach to peptic ulcer disease includes agents that reduce gastric acidity and hence peptic activity, inactivate or adsorb pepsin, create a physical barrier against the effects of acid and pepsin, or enhance mucosal defence. Profound gastric acid reduction may predispose to infection, and it has been suggested that carcinogenesis is possible, although a cause-effect relationship has never been established. The side-effects of therapy are well-described, and may limit the therapeutic approach. Healing rates correlate closely with acid suppression in duodenal ulcer, but

The etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of reflux esophagitis are reviewed. Reflux esophagitis is the subjective or objective response to gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which is defined as the entrance of gastroduodenal contents into the esophagus not associated with vomiting or belching. The pathogenesis of reflux esophagitis may involve a number of mechanisms, including changes in lower esophageal sphincter pressure, gastric volume, composition of the refluxate, esophageal acid clearance, and esophageal tissue resistance. The most common symptom of reflux esophagitis is heartbur
