[Contribution of contact lenses to the reduction of aniseikonia in myopic patients after unilateral cataract operations (author's transl)].

The most rapid method for determining the best mode of optical compensation in myopic patients following cataract operations was studied, by employing a graphic method for calculating theoretical aniseikonia and measuring subjective aniseikonia with a new stereo-projector. Several examples of the method chosen are given, this involving optical equipment--glasses, lens, myopisation--aniseikonia being reduced to a maximum.

[Comparative studies of the pressure-lowering effect of timolol and phospholine iodide (author's transl)].

A comparative study of the intraocular pressure-lowering effects of timolol and phospholine iodide in cases of aphakic glaucoma was carried out. The authors compared the I.O.P.-lowering effect of these two drugs in 30 eyes (30 patients) with aphakic glaucoma over an eight-month observation period. The following was established after a statistical analysis of the material: 1. The I.O.P.-lowering effect of timolol in aphakic glaucoma cases is almost identical with the effect of the drug in cases of chronic open-angle glaucoma. 2. The administration of phospholine iodide in such cases leads to a

Athalamia as a late complication after keratoplasty on aphakic eyes.

In 3 cases of keratoplasty in aphakic eyes 4--8 months after surgery a gradual flattening of the anterior chamber was observed. During the initial postoperative months there was no suggestion of any impending complication. No synechiae at the anterior chamber angle were present, the anterior vitreous face had remained intact without being in contact with the posterior corneal surface, and the intraocular pressure remained within normal limits. Separation of anterior synechiae as well as vitrectomy via pars plana resulted merely in a temporary amelioration of this condition. Within a few days t

Cyclocryotherapy of chronic open-angle glaucoma in aphakic eyes.

Twenty-six eyes of 25 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and surgical aphakia with inadequate control of intraocular pressure (IOP) despite maximal medical treatment were treated with cyclocryotherapy, according to a prospective protocol and specific technique. (Neovascular and synechial glaucoma were excluded from this series.) In most cases topical medications were resumed after cyclocryotherapy. During follow-up of seven to 95 months (average, 46 months), IOP was reduced to 19 mm Hg or lower in 24 out of 26 eyes (92%). In two eyes, persistent decrease in visual acuity, unrelated to r

Extracapsular surgery and lens implantation.

Extracapsular surgery is an ideal type of cataract surgery in combination with lens implantation insofar as stability and fixation of the lens is greatly enhanced. However, a number of complications can be expected. The main probelms of extracapsular surgery is posterior capsule opacification. This is due to regeneration of germinal lens fibers. To prevent this a complete removal of cortical lens matter is advisable, even in lens implantation. This however requires special lenses, which have additional iris fixation.

Glare sensitivity in corrected aphakes.

Groups of elderly aphakic patients treated with contact lenses, spectacles and intraocular lenses, as well as elderly phakic patients, all with good visual acuity were tested for glare sensitivity. All groups showed comparable glare sensitivity. However, aphakic patients with lesn material, or postop membranes in the the pupil area, were statistically more glare sensitive. These membranes occur when the cataract extraction is extracapsular in nature. Finally, the study shows that measurement of visual acuity in the typical examination room environment does not accurately describe the manner in

Prospective analysis of Artisan aphakia intraocular lens implantation for nontraumatic ectopia lentis in children.

PURPOSE: To report long-term outcomes of iris claw aphakia intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for nontraumatic ectopia lentis (EL) in children. METHODS: In this prospective study, children who underwent Artisan Aphakia IOL placement were included if they have a minimum of 1-year follow-up after implantation. Main outcome measures were: best-corrected distance visual acuity, reoperations, change in central corneal thickness (CCT), and corneal endothelial cell counts (ECC). RESULTS: The Artisan Aphakia IOL was implanted in a total of 76 eyes of 43 patients (68 eyes of 34 patients with EL). 56

Patching in Children With Unilateral Congenital Cataract and Child Functioning and Parenting Stress.

IMPORTANCE: Parents may be concerned about the adverse outcomes of occlusion therapy in children treated for unilateral congenital cataract (UCC). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether occlusion therapy in children treated for UCC with poor visual outcomes is negatively associated with poorer child and/or family functioning. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted in 2023 using data collected between 2006 and 2016 in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS). IATS participants with a visual acuity (VA) of 20/200 or worse were included. Statistical analysis was performed

The Myopic Shift in Aphakic Eyes in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study After 10 Years of Follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: To report the myopic shift in the aphakic eyes of a cohort of children who underwent unilateral cataract surgery during infancy and were then followed longitudinally for 10.5 years. METHODS: One-half of the children enrolled in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS) were randomized to aphakia and contact lens correction after unilateral cataract surgery. They then underwent ocular examinations using standardized protocols at prescribed time intervals until age 10.5 years. RESULTS: Thirty of 57 children randomized to aphakia remained aphakic at age 10.5, having undergone unilat

Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens: Anterior Chamber or Retropupillary Implantation? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Iris-claw intraocular lens (ICIOL) could be implanted in the anterior chamber (AC) or retropupillary (RP) in eyes lacking capsular and/or zonular support. Several studies have focused on comparing the efficacy and complications of these two techniques and we designed this research to review the published literatures. Materials and Methods: Peer-reviewed studies were collected through network databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov) and analyzed. The primary outcome was the standardized mean differences (SMDs)

[Benefits of Iris Claw lens implantation among present methods of surgical correction of aphakia with insufficient capsular support].

Both anatomical and functional benefits associated with the implantation of intraocular lenses are the basis for the use of multiple surgical methods in intraocular lens surgery. To achieve adequate stability of the intraocular lens in cases of insufficient capsular support one may choose angle-supported anterior chamber intraocular lenses, iris-fixated intraocular lenses, iris-sutured or transsclerally sutured posterior chamber intraocular lenses. The transscleral IOL stabilization, most commonly used in clinical practice, seems particularly valuable in eyes with decreased corneal endothelial

Implantation of iris-claw Artisan intraocular lens for aphakia in Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis.

Implantation of iris-claw Artisan intraocular lens (IOL) is a surgical option for correction of aphakia; however, these IOLs have not been used in eyes with uveitis including Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI) due to possible risk of severe postoperative intraocular inflammation. In the case reported here, we secondarily implanted an Artisan IOL in a 28-year-old man with FHI who had aphakia with no capsular support due to a previous complicated cataract surgery. Enclavation was easily performed and no intraoperative complication was noted. Postoperative course was uneventful with no sign

Spontaneous dislocation of posterior polar cataract.

We report an unusual case of unilateral spontaneous lens dislocation in a 52-year-old woman with a posterior polar cataract. We postulate that the increasing lens size secondary to nuclear sclerosis may have exerted pressure on a thinned posterior capsule, causing the capsule to rupture spontaneously. The unusual weak posterior capsule in posterior polar cataract is a well-recognized risk factor in phacoemulsification surgery. We believe this is the first report case of spontaneous lens dislocation secondary to posterior capsule rupture in posterior polar cataract.

Endothelial keratoplasty technique for aniridic aphakic eyes.

We describe special techniques to visualize the donor tissue in Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty and to prevent the tissue or stripped recipient Descemet's membrane from dropping onto the retina. The techniques were used successfully to treat corneal decompensation in 3 consecutive cases with no iris or lens present. The results indicate that with careful planning and a good technique, aniridic aphakic patients can benefit from the rapid corneal rehabilitation provided by endothelial keratoplasty.
