An Investigation of Elevated Serum Copper Levels Following Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery alters physiology and dietary absorption, which may influence trace metal homeostasis. Copper (Cu), an essential micronutrient linked to inflammation and obesity and has been found to be elevated in a pre-surgery bariatric patient population. This study followed the cohort and evaluated changes in serum Cu after bariatric surgery and identified demographic, metabolic, and biochemical factors associated with elevated post-surgery Cu. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study involving electronic health record (EHR) data from 523 bariatric surgery patients

Rurality and Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Access and Outcomes in the Deep South.

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgery is effective in treating obesity with excellent short- and long-term outcomes. However, bariatric surgery remains underutilized, particularly in the Deep South. Rurality is associated with poor surgical outcomes and access to care. This study sought to evaluate access to and outcomes following bariatric surgery for rural and non-rural patients in the Deep South. METHODS: All patients referred for primary bariatric surgery from 2015 to 2023 were identified from a single institutional database (n = 3083). Patients were geocoded and stratified by rural status. Gut microbiome-derived metabolites as predictors of bariatric surgery outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment for severe obesity and obesity-associated metabolic disorders. However, substantial interindividual variability exists in postoperative weight loss and type 2 diabetes mellitus remission. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiome-derived metabolites may influence metabolic responses after bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding the predictive role of gut microbiome-derived metabolites, particularly short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and tryptophan-derived metabolites,

Evolving utilization of bariatric surgery since the rise of semaglutide and tirzepatide.

BACKGROUND: Semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed obesity treatment, but recent changes to bariatric surgery utilization are not well understood. METHODS: Epic's nationwide Cosmos database was queried for patients who underwent primary sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass between 2018 and 2025. Patient characteristics including preoperative semaglutide or tirzepatide dispense history were compared using chi-squared and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Modified Poisson regression was used to identify factors independently associated with pre-surgery GLP-1RA use. Multilevel models were used to e

Exploring barriers to care and patient perspectives in metabolic and bariatric surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is the most effective treatment for severe obesity but requires extensive patient education and lifelong engagement. Although many patients achieve durable weight loss, some experience weight recurrence or adverse effects. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate how patient experience and social determinants influence MBS outcomes. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, an electronic survey was distributed to patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at a single academic institution between

Bariatric Surgery, Medical Weight Loss, and the Upper Aerodigestive Tract.

Obesity and intentional weight loss increasingly influence otolaryngologic disease through mechanical, metabolic, inflammatory, gastrointestinal, and regional soft-tissue effects. This review examines how bariatric surgery and contemporary medical weight-loss therapies affect the upper aerodigestive tract. Evidence is strongest for obstructive sleep apnea, in which substantial weight reduction improves disease severity but does not ensure remission. Emerging data suggest potential benefits for chronic rhinosinusitis and selected voice outcomes, alongside risks such as procedure-specific reflux

Impact of bariatric surgeries on bone density in patients with severe obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgery is approved to promote weight loss and induce remission of obesity-related medical conditions. However, the impact of these procedures on bone density is still debated. This study aimed to assess the effect of bariatric surgeries on bone mineral density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan in sleeve gastrectomy and bypass surgery. METHODS: The prospective cohort study recruited 32 patients with severe obesity, who underwent metabolic and bariatric surgery. Patients were divided into two groups and monitored for one year. Digestive Hormones and Their Impact on Bariatric and Pharmacologic Weight-Loss Therapies.

Obesity is a growing global health challenge associated with major cardiometabolic complications. While bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment for severe obesity, recent advances in incretin-based pharmacotherapy, multi-receptor agonists, and endoscopic bariatric procedures have substantially expanded therapeutic options. Beyond mechanical restriction, these interventions exert their effects through complex hormonal and neurophysiological mechanisms involving gut-brain signaling, gastric motility, and enteroendocrine adaptations. Gut-derived hormones, including ghrelin, glucago

Care of Patients After Bariatric Surgery in the Periconceptional and Perinatal Periods.

Obesity in women of reproductive age is a major issue. It is associated with reduced fertility and an increased risk of obstetric and perinatal complications. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity, leading to substantial weight reduction, improvement of metabolic disorders, and enhanced fertility. Consequently, an increasing number of women are becoming pregnant after undergoing bariatric surgery. The aim of this paper is to review current recommendations and research data regarding the care of women after bariatric surgery in the periconceptional and perinatal p

Prurigo Pigmentosa Following Bariatric Surgery: A Comprehensive Clinicopathological Review.

Prurigo pigmentosa (PP) is a rare inflammatory dermatosis first described in 1971 by Nagashima, classically predominantly affecting young women, particularly those of East Asian descent. Clinically, PP presents with pruritic, erythematous papules, which eventually form a reticulated pattern and resolve into post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The exact pathogenesis of PP remains unclear, but it is frequently linked to ketosis-inducing conditions, including strict dieting, fasting, and metabolic changes, such as those observed in diabetic ketoacidosis or anorexia nervosa. In recent years, PP h

Adult acquired buried penis and bariatric surgery: a mighty motivator.

BACKGROUND: While adult acquired buried penis (AABP) is due to obesity, the literature suggests that weight loss may not provide much patient benefit. We aim to determine if weight loss leads to voiding, anatomic, and sexual symptom improvement in men with AABP who are undergoing bariatric weight loss surgery. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional survey of men who underwent bariatric surgery at a single academic institution between 2009 and 2021. The survey assessed demographics, voiding function, anatomic function, and sexual function. Men were considered to have AABP if th
