Effects of a Multi-Component Behavioral Intervention (MCI) for Insomnia on Depressive and Insomnia Symptoms in Individuals with High and Low Depression.

Insomnia and depression are prevalent and co-occurring conditions that are associated with significant impairment of life. Previous research indicates that cognitive-behavioral interventions for insomnia (CBT-I) can improve both insomnia and depressive symptoms. The aim of the authors in this study was to determine whether a multi-component behavioral intervention (MCI) improved both insomnia and depressive symptoms in persons presenting with insomnia and high levels of depression. The sample consisted of 321 individuals with insomnia who participated in a trial of insomnia treatments; 106 par

Minocycline modulates neuroprotective effect of hesperidin against quinolinic acid induced Huntington's disease like symptoms in rats: behavioral, biochemical, cellular and histological evidences.

Emerging evidences indicate hesperidin, a citrus flavanone, attenuates neurodegenerative processes and related complications. Besides its anti-oxidant properties, the other probable mechanisms which underpin its neuroprotective potential are still not clear. In light of emerging role of flavonoids in modulating oxidative stress and neuro-inflammation, the study has been designed to explore the possible neuroprotective effect of hesperidin and its combination with minocycline (microglial inhibitor), against quinolinic acid (QA) induced Huntington's disease (HD) like symptoms in rats. Unilateral

Cognitive behavioral therapy and physical exercise for climacteric symptoms in breast cancer patients experiencing treatment-induced menopause: design of a multicenter trial.

BACKGROUND: Premature menopause is a major concern of younger women undergoing adjuvant therapy for breast cancer. Hormone replacement therapy is contraindicated in women with a history of breast cancer. Non-hormonal medications show a range of bothersome side-effects. There is growing evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and physical exercise can have a positive impact on symptoms in naturally occurring menopause. The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of these interventions among women with breast cancer experiencing treatment-induced menopause. METHODS/DESIG

The effectiveness of a training for patients with unexplained physical symptoms: protocol of a cognitive behavioral group training and randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In primary care, up to 74% of physical symptoms is classified as unexplained. These symptoms can cause high levels of distress and healthcare utilization. Cognitive behavioral therapy has shown to be effective, but does not seem to be attractive to patients. An exception herein is a therapy based on the consequences model, which distinguishes itself by its labeling of psychosocial distress in terms of consequences rather than as causes of physical symptoms. In secondary care, 81% of the patients accepts this therapy, but in primary care the outcome is poor. We assume that positive

A non-pharmacological intervention to manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and reduce caregiver distress: design and methods of project ACT3.

Project ACT is a randomized controlled trial designed to test the effectiveness of a non-pharmacological home-based intervention to reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and caregiver distress. The study targets 272 stressed racially diverse family caregivers providing in-home care to persons with moderate stage dementia with one or more behavioral disturbances. All participants are interviewed at baseline, 4-months (main trial endpoint), and 6-months (maintenance). The four-month intervention involves up to 13 visits from an occupational therapist who works with fami

Longitudinal associations of depressive and burnout symptoms with eating behavior and physical activity in occupational health clients with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Depression and occupational burnout are prevalent mental health challenges in working-age populations and are linked to adverse health behaviors, with these concerns particularly relevant among individuals with obesity. Although prior research suggests associations with eating behaviors and physical activity, most studies rely on cross-sectional designs, leaving the temporal and potentially bidirectional relationships between mental health and health behaviors unclear. METHODS: This longitudinal study examined bidirectional associations between depressive and burnout symptoms, e

Parental Expectations, Anxiety, and Health Behaviors in Routine Childhood Vaccination: Associations with Child Pain and Symptom Experiences.

OBJECTIVES: In young children, somatic symptom reporting occurs through parents. Parental cognitions can directly influence the reported symptoms in their child after vaccination. Limited research exists on factors affecting parental symptom reporting. The current study examined whether parental state anxiety and side effect expectations before routine vaccinations are associated with parent reports of pain and symptoms after vaccinations. In addition, we explored health behaviors in relation to symptom expectations and observed symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from routine vaccinations o

Feasibility of Videoconference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Somatic Symptom Disorder: Single-Arm Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is a mental disorder marked by persistent somatic symptoms and maladaptive health-related thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective in treating SSD, reducing patients' somatic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms. However, challenges remain-including limited access to treatment. Videoconference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (vCBT) has emerged as a promising approach, offering flexible and tailored treatment while addressing the shortage of medical resources and potentially reducin

Heat-related symptom profiles among construction workers: a latent class analysis of behavioral and workplace factors.

BACKGROUND: Construction workers face substantial occupational heat exposure, but little is known about whether heat-related symptoms form distinct co-occurring profiles or which modifiable workplace and behavioral factors characterize workers with greater symptom burden. This study used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify heat-related symptom profiles among construction workers and examine associated behavioral and workplace factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 357 construction workers at 7 South Korean worksites in September 2022. Participants reported heat-re

Listening to your stomach: Effects of gastric biofeedback training on interoception, eating behavior and eating disorder symptoms.

Gastric interoception, the sensing of signals from the stomach, plays a central role in regulating hunger, satiety, and fullness and is closely linked to eating behaviors and symptoms of eating disorders (EDs). Gastric motility has been identified as a key mediator of hunger and satiety, with altered gastric rhythms being observed in individuals with EDs. Enhancing gastric interoception by targeting gastric rhythms may therefore offer a promising intervention strategy. This study examined the effects of a novel electrogastrography (EGG)-based gastric biofeedback training delivered using virtua

Co-occurrence between eating disorder symptoms and addictive behaviors among adult women: a controlled analysis.

BACKGROUND: While associations between abnormal eating behaviors and attitudes (AEBs) and addictive behaviors have been explored, existing research does not adequately control for confounding variables, leaving the possibility of spurious correlations. Therefore, this study aims to provide clearer insights by examining the relationships between anorexic and bulimic symptoms (i.e., drive for thinness and binge eating) and specific addictive behaviors, while controlling for psychological distress and multiple addictive behaviors. METHODS: Using a sample of 2,000 adult women, the participants se

Effect of Probiotics Supplementation on REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience gut microbiota dysbiosis. Probiotic intervention could potentially serve as a safe and effective adjunctive therapeutic approach for PD, but its effects on rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and motor symptoms in PD patients warrant further investigation. OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of probiotics on RBD, motor symptoms, gut microbiota, and serum metabolites in individuals with PD. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, PD patients were randomly allocated to either a probiotics or a control group while main

Trait xenophobia is more strongly related to maladaptive beliefs and pandemic health behaviors than affective symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Xenophobia is a prevalent phenomenon with significant personal and societal consequences. As expressed by individuals, it can be influenced by psychological or psychiatric factors. Negative affect is an important aspect of xenophobia, and both negative affect and xenophobia have increased in prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting a potential association. We tested whether trait-like xenophobic beliefs relate to common affective symptoms, compared to other maladaptive beliefs such as conspiratorial beliefs, and, in turn, how these symptoms and beliefs relate to pandemic

Cross-Sectional Associations Between Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms and Disordered Eating Behaviors by Sex in University Students.

Depressive and anxiety symptoms are associated with a greater likelihood of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), but the role of sex in these associations is unclear. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the associations between depression, anxiety, and DEBs in a sample of Spanish university students. Methods: Depression was assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), anxiety with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) instrument, and DEBs with the Sick, Control, One stone, Fat, Food (SCOFF) questionnaire. Statistical analyses included generalized linear regression mo

Gratitude predicts best friends' aggressive behaviors but not depressive symptoms: A dyadic study of Chinese early adolescents.

Gratitude has been empirically linked to psychological and behavioral adjustment outcomes during early adolescence. However, the role of gratitude in relation to friends' adjustment outcomes remains unclear, particularly in more interdependent-oriented cultures. To address this gap, this 1-year longitudinal study applied the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to simultaneously examine whether gratitude would predict adolescents' and their best friends' depressive symptoms and aggressive behaviors. The sample consisted of 1342 students within 671 friendship dyads, initially in the fourth grade

Association between Self-Perception of Chewing, Chewing Behavior, and the Presence of Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Candidates for Bariatric Surgery.

Given the changes in the digestive tract post-bariatric surgery, adapting to a new pattern of eating behavior becomes crucial, with special attention to the specifics of chewing mechanics. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-perception of chewing, chewing behavior, and the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in preoperative patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Sixty adult candidates for bariatric surgery at a public hospital in Belém (Brazil) were analyzed. Participants predominantly exhibited unilateral chewing patterns (91.6%), a fast chewing rhythm (73.3%), a la
