Grief reactions treated in a psychiatric out-patient clinic.

Grief reactions to the death of a close relative are not commonly treated in psychiatric out-patient clinics in Japan. However, recently our clinic has had a chance to see such cases. I analyzed 11 cases of grief reactions (7 females, 4 males). The first part of this paper focuses on the distinction between normal and abnormal grief reactions, and an attempt was made to classify grief reactions in the nosology. Following this, three factors were specified as enhancing vulnerability to bereavement: (1) sex (female), (2) age (middle-aged), and (3) cause of death (sudden death). The second part f…

Grief experiences among LGBTQ+ populations: a scoping review.

CONTEXT: LGBTQ+ individuals face grieving processes complicated by minority stress, structural discrimination, and fears related to disclosure of their sexual orientation or gender identity, which leads to disenfranchised grief within healthcare systems that remain heteronormative. Recent literature on palliative care highlights inequities in access, a lack of recognition of chosen families, and gaps in professionals' LGBTQ+ cultural competence. OBJECTIVE: To explore research published between 2021 and 2026 on grief and bereavement-related experiences among LGBTQ+ adults in healthcare and pal…

Mental health promotion and protection relating to key life events and transitions in adulthood: a rapid systematic review of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: During the decades representing working-age adulthood, most people will experience one or several significant life events or transitions. These may present a challenge to mental health. AIM: The primary aim of this rapid systematic review of systematic reviews was to summarise available evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to promote and protect mental health relating to four key life events and transitions: pregnancy and early parenthood, bereavement, unemployment, and housing problems. This review was conducted to inform UK national policy on mental health support. ME…

Emotional response patterns of depression, grief, sadness and stress to differing life events: a quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: In clarifying the clinical definition of an episode of major depression, DSM-5 equates bereavement with a number of other loss-related stressors (e.g. financial ruin, serious medical problems) and infers differences between such loss-related and non-loss-related responses. We undertook a study with the aim of examining the likelihood of varying life stressors leading to depression or to other emotional responses, and so allowing consideration as to whether bereavement might be equivalent to other loss-related stressful triggers. METHODS: We studied a sample comprising sub-sets of …

Death and grief literacy in the context of loneliness: Insights from an international symposium.

Death and grief literacy are increasingly recognised as crucial public health resources for responding to serious illness, dying, death, and bereavement. This critical essay summarises key discussions from a three-day international symposium, "Fostering Connection in Existential Phases of Life: How Do We Enhance Death and Grief Literacy?" (July 2025), which brought together experts from palliative care, caring communities, LGBTQ+ advocacy, migration studies, social work, volunteering, and psychosocial support. The symposium did not include members of the general public but focused on academic,…

Does experience of a significant other's death affect Korean older adults' end-of-life care planning by encouraging death talks?

BACKGROUND: This study investigates whether Korean older adults who experienced the death of a significant other are more likely to engage in end-of-life care planning (EOLCP), and whether discussing their own death contributes to this relationship. We also examine the relevance of caregiving experience, time since death, and death suddenness for EOLCP. METHODS: The analyses are based on survey data collected in 2021 from a nationally representative sample of Korean older adults aged 60 years or older. We used multi-stage stratified cluster sampling techniques to draw our sample (N = 610). Des

The impact of specifying suicide as the cause of death in an obituary.

BACKGROUND: Historically, people who die by suicide and those who survive them have been perceived more negatively than those affected by other types of death (e.g., Reynolds & Cimbolic, 1988). Yet, it is unclear whether these negative perceptions actually lead to decreased social and emotional support for people bereaved by suicide. AIMS: To examine whether specifying suicide as the cause of death in an obituary impacts perceptions of a decedent and willingness to provide support to the decedent's family. METHOD: A group of 253 participants were randomly assigned to read one of three fictio

Emotional and cardiovascular sensitization to daily stress following childhood parental loss.

Adverse childhood events can influence the development of emotional and physiological self-regulatory abilities, with significant consequences for vulnerability to psychological and physical illness. This study evaluated stress sensitization and inoculation models of the impact of early parental death on stress exposure and reactivity in late adolescence/young adulthood. Ambulatory blood pressure (BP) and diary reports of minor stress were collected every 30 min during waking hours over a 24-hr period from 91 late adolescents/young adults (43 early bereaved, 48 nonbereaved). Across the sample,

Enacting compassionate care at the end-of-life in long-term care: a qualitative interpretive study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-quarter of the Canadian population will die in long-term care (LTC) homes, highlighting the importance of improving end-of-life (EOL) care in these settings. There is a growing recognition of the need to integrate palliative approach to care in these settings. Central to this approach is compassionate care, which supports the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of residents and their families at EOL. Compassion is fundamental to person-centered care and plays a critical role in shaping how staff and families experience dying, death and bereavement. Compa…

From loss to disorder: The influence of maladaptive coping on prolonged grief.

Research indicates that post-bereavement coping strategies can be adaptive or maladaptive. Understanding which strategies lead to poorer outcomes is an important clinical and theoretical question with the potential to guide intervention. The Oxford Grief - Coping Strategies scale was developed from interviews with bereaved people with and without prolonged grief disorder (PGD) to assess the frequency of maladaptive cognitive and behavioural strategies after bereavement. Factorial and psychometric validity were assessed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (N = 676). A three-wave …

"The Health Caregivers Did Not Care about Me after the Loss": Maternal Experiences of Perinatal Loss in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area, Ghana.

One of the common undesirable outcomes of pregnancy is perinatal loss. Healthcare systems strive to reduce the incidence of perinatal loss but typically little attention is on the experiences of bereaved mothers following perinatal loss, particularly in low and middle-income countries where such deaths are common. This research explored the lived experiences of mothers with perinatal loss in the Kumasi metropolis, Ghana. A qualitative design was used to explore the experiences of nine (9) bereaved mothers from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital's postnatal ward and the Mother and Baby Unit. Da

Nursing postvention for spousal survivors of suicide.

There is a scarcity of information available with respect to postbereavement outcomes for survivors of the suicide of a loved one. Few studies have focused on postvention therapies for the bereaved, particularly the bereaved survivors of suicide. The major aim of this study as to compare the effects of two theoretically derived nursing postventions, Bereavement Group Postvention (BGP) and Social Group Postvention (SGP), among the widowed whose spouses died of suicide. The findings suggest that both groups experienced an overall reduction in depression and distress. Although participants in the…

"Reconciling"- conceptualising the grieving process of family members involved in assisted dying: a grounded formal theory.

BACKGROUND: The death of a loved one invariably triggers a complex constellation of profound emotional, psychological, and physical grief reactions. While theoretical frameworks for understanding the grieving process are well-established, the advent of assisted dying presents a novel and under-examined context for grief and bereavement. Thus, this study sought to generate a theory explaining the grieving process of family members involved in assisted dying. METHODS: A grounded formal theory approach was employed. Extensive systematic searches were undertaken across various four databases for …
