Factors contributing to the occurrence of emerging infectious diseases.

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) have been receiving increasing attention for more than two decades. Such attention has resulted from observations of increasing resistance of microorganisms to the usual antibiotics, the identification of formerly unknown disease agents and the diseases they cause, and the realization that the concept of globalization includes global exposure to disease agents formerly confined to small, endemic, or remote areas. Sadly, in the fall of 2001, the potential for using microbial agents as instruments of terror and destruction became obvious with the incidents of

Management of chronic ocular sarcoidosis: challenges and solutions.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis constitutes one of the leading causes of ocular inflammation. Chronic ocular sarcoidosis can affect any segment of the eye and its adnexa, producing a wide range of clinical manifestations and severity. If left untreated, permanent visual impairment or even blindness may ensue. Treatment approaches vary from topical therapy to systemic agents that induce immunosuppression to different levels according to disease severity. OBJECTIVE: To review the published literature on the management options for chronic ocular sarcoidosis and provide a comprehensive list of available

Optimal therapy and prospects for new medicines in eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome).

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA; previously known as Churg-Strauss syndrome) is lower than that of other antineutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV's), and only a few randomized controlled trials have been conducted for this rare disease. However, recent international efforts have helped delineate the best treatment approach. AREAS COVERED: At present, EGPA conventional therapy is by default similar to that of other AAVs. Limited, non-severe EGPA can initially be treated with glucocorticoids (GCs) alone. Patients w

A cell-cell communication signal from Enterobacter cloacae interfering with the signaling systems and virulence in Shigella sonnei.

UNLABELLED: Quorum sensing (QS) is widely utilized by both bacteria and fungi to mediate cell-cell communication. Previous studies have demonstrated that the indole derivative indole-3-ethanol (also known as tryptophol) controls morphogenesis as a QS molecule in fungi. However, whether this QS signal is involved in the modulation of biological functions in bacteria remains unknown. Here, we report that indole-3-ethanol controls the biological functions and pathogenicity of Enterobacter cloacae subsp. cloacae ATCC 13047. The biosynthesis of indole-3-ethanol is performed by YjgB (ECL_RS22935), a

Research on the application of compound microorganism preparation in reusing urban reclaimed water in circulating cooling water system.

A biological method was developed for reusing urban reclaimed water in circulating cooling water systems (CCWS), in which the compound microorganism preparation (CMP) mainly included nitrobacteria, Bacillus subtilis, photosynthetic bacteria and Thiobacillus denitrificans, was used to control the scaling, corrosion and biofouling of CCWS. The abundant carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in urban reclaimed water met the needs of microbial growth. Compared with chemical agents, CMP had the advantages of high efficiency, no additional chemicals and being more economical. The research results showed th

mRNA export in the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii: emerging divergent components of a crucial pathway.

Control of gene expression is crucial for parasite survival and is the result of a series of processes that are regulated to permit fine-tuning of gene expression in response to biological changes during the life-cycle of apicomplexan parasites. Control of mRNA nuclear export is a key process in eukaryotic cells but is poorly understood in apicomplexan parasites. Here, we review recent knowledge regarding this process with an emphasis on T. gondii. We describe the presence of divergent orthologs and discuss structural and functional differences in export factors between apicomplexans and other

Effects of Thermal Regimes, Starvation and Age on Heat Tolerance of the Parthenium Beetle Zygogramma bicolorata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) following Dynamic and Static Protocols.

Temperature and resource availability are key elements known to limit the occurrence and survival of arthropods in the wild. In the current era of climate change, critical thermal limits and the factors affecting these may be of particular importance. We therefore investigated the critical thermal maxima (CTmax) of adult Zygogramma bicolorata beetles, a biological control agent for the invasive plant Parthenium hysterophorus, in relation to thermal acclimation, hardening, age, and food availability using static (constant) and dynamic (ramping) protocols. Increasing temperatures and exposure ti

State-of-the-Art Evidence for Clinical Outcomes and Therapeutic Implications of Janus Kinase Inhibitors in Moderate-to-Severe Ulcerative Colitis: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by relapsing inflammation and incomplete response to conventional therapies. Although biologics have advanced UC management, many patients with moderate-to-severe disease experience treatment failure, relapse, or adverse effects. This review evaluates the pharmacology, efficacy, and safety of oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors-tofacitinib, upadacitinib, and filgotinib-to guide their clinical use in UC. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane,

An update on the diagnosis and management of ocular sarcoidosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ocular sarcoidosis is one of the most common causes of uveitis worldwide. The diagnosis and treatment of patients with ocular sarcoidosis remains challenging in some cases. It is important for clinicians to keep up to date with new diagnostic and treatment tools for this disease. RECENT FINDINGS: The International Workshop on Ocular Sarcoidosis diagnostic criteria were first proposed in 2009 and revised in 2017. The new criteria contained two parts: ocular presentation and systemic investigation. The diagnostic value of liver enzymes was reduced in the new criteria, whereas

Bench-to-Bedside Perspectives on the Development of Soluble TCR-Based Protein Biologics: Current Landscape, Control Strategy and Future Direction.

Soluble T-cell receptor (TCR)-based biologics (protein-based) are an emerging class of immunotherapeutic agents that recognize antigenic peptides presented by the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) on the surface of target cells. Furthermore, they simultaneously bind to cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3) subunits on T cells, recruit T cells to target cells, and promote T-cell activation and degranulation, ultimately eliminating tumor cells. Soluble TCR-based protein biologics target intracellular antigens that are inaccessible to conventional antibody-based drugs. Consequently, the development of s

Biologic treatments for adult-onset Still's disease.

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a systemic inflammatory disorder that is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is characterized by high spiking fevers, arthritis or arthralgia, and an evanescent salmon-coloured rash. Many other systemic manifestations and laboratory test abnormalities may occur. Biologic drugs, TNF-α inhibitors, and IL-1 and IL-6 blockers have been used for the treatment of patients with AOSD refractory to conventional treatment or those with life-threatening manifestations aiming for better disease control. Data on biologic treatments in AOSD are limited and consist mainly of ca

Computational origins of shape perception.

Shape perception is central to human vision, but its developmental origins remain unknown. Here we show that shape perception develops from three ingredients: (1) generic fitting systems, (2) embodied visual experiences, and (3) biologically plausible sensors. We first show that generic fitting models (transformers) trained on embodied visual experiences change from color-based to shape-based visual systems. We then perform in silico controlled-rearing experiments to determine what causes this developmental change. We find that view diversity-experiencing many views of the same object-produces

CT-P13: design, development, and place in therapy.

The introduction of biological agents has revolutionized the management of many life-threatening and debilitating immune-mediated diseases. Because of the high cost of biological drugs and their patent expiration, the market has opened to biosimilar agents, copy versions of the originators, which can lead to reduced health care expenditure and increase treatment access worldwide. CT-P13 is the first biosimilar of infliximab (IFX) and has been approved for the same indications as its originator drug. It obtained regulatory approval by the European Medicines Agency in September 2013 and by the U

[Successful treatment with risankizumab in a patient with psoriasis and HIV].

The treatment of psoriasis in HIV-positive patients is challenging, as they may require systemic immunosuppressive treatment such as biological agents, leading to an increased risk of infections. A case report of an HIV positive patient with severe psoriasis without arthropathic compromise, refractory to other treatments, is presented. There are limited data on the use of biological therapies in HIV-positive patients, but isolated case reports suggest that their use is effective and safe. Specifically, the emergence of monoclonal antibodies selective for interleukin 23 such as risankizumab may

In vitro ovicidal and cestocidal effects of toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis on the canine and human parasite Dipylidium caninum.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a gram-positive soil-dwelling bacterium that is commonly used as a biological pesticide. This bacterium may also be used for biological control of helminth parasites in domestic animals. In this study, we evaluated the possible ovicidal and cestocidal effects of a total protein extract of B. thuringiensis native strains on the zoonotic cestode parasite of dogs, Dipylidium caninum (D. caninum). Dose and time response curves were determined by coincubating B. thuringiensis proteins at concentration ranging from 100 to 1000 μ g/mL along with 4000 egg capsules of D. canin
