Purpose: The primary objective was to analyze the association between sexual orientation and physical abuse victimization using a representative sample from the U.S. active-duty military population. The secondary objective was to determine if differences exist by sexual orientation in perceived barriers (e.g., stigma) to mental health care utilization among physical abuse victimization survivors. Methods: The 2018 Department of Defense Health Related Behaviors Survey (HRBS) (n = 17,166 active-duty respondents) was used for analysis. Weighted logistic regressions and Poisson regressions were us

BACKGROUND: In Australia, men who have sex with men (MSM) are deferred from blood donation for 3 months from last sexual contact. Internationally, deferral policies for MSM are evolving in the direction of expanded inclusivity in response to community expectations. To inform future policy options, we assessed perceptions of the risk of HIV transmission from blood transfusion among Australian MSM.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Flux is an online prospective cohort of Australian gay and bisexual men (cis or trans, regardless of their sexual history) and other men who have had sex with men (gbMSM). W

This study examined the association between adolescent bullying victimization (ABV) and adult mental health among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in South Korea (hereafter Korea). We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 2152 Korean LGB adults in 2016. Based on experiences of and reasons for ABV, participants were categorized into four groups: "never bullied," "bullied due to sexual orientation and gender expression (SOGE)," "bullied due to other reasons," and "bullied, reason unspecified." Compared with participants who have never been bullied during adolescence, those who have b

Purpose: Research on opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and overdose (i.e., opioid outcomes) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other populations within the LGBTQ umbrella (LGBTQ+) remains sparse. The purpose of this scoping review was to characterize the state of the research on opioid outcomes among LGBTQ+ populations, and identify gaps in the extant literature and areas for future research. Methods: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed, English language articles published between 2011 and 2020 that examined opioid outcomes among LGBTQ+ populations in the

INTRODUCTION: The aims of the study are to identify health-related behaviors associated with sexual orientation among active duty military personnel and to compare those behaviors when lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) groups are aggregated and disaggregated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used public data from the 2015 Health-Related Behavior Survey of Active Duty Military Personnel. Binomial logistic regression analyses were used to examine differences between and within heterosexual, same-sex, and bisexual groups as predicted by the following correlates: demographic characteristics, physical act

We have tracked belief in the effectiveness of HIV treatment as prevention (TasP) among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM) since 2013. National, online cross-sectional surveys of GBM were conducted every 2 years during 2013-2019. Trends and associations were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Data from 4,903 survey responses were included. Belief that HIV treatment prevents transmission increased from 2.6% in 2013 to 34.6% in 2019. Belief in the effectiveness of TasP was consistently higher among HIV-positive participants than other participants. In 2019, higher levels of beli

Few studies have examined changes in sexual behaviour following HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in relationships. In a national, online, prospective study of GBM in Australia, we compared sexual behaviours prior to and after PrEP initiation among HIV-negative and unknown-HIV-status men (recruited 2014-2017) not taking PrEP at baseline and who completed at least one six-monthly follow-up by July 2018. Among men in relationships who did not initiate PrEP (n = 339), we compared their most recent survey to their prior one

The impact of COVID-19 on mental health has begun to be widely recognized, but there is an absence of studies on how the mental health of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 857 LGB people in Hong Kong participated in a community-based survey study. Over one-fourth of them met the criteria for probable clinical depression (31.5%) and generalized anxiety disorder (27.9%). Besides general stressors, we identified sexual minority-specific stressors during the pandemic. 4.2% of the participants indicated that they had frequently experienc

This study aimed to determine the change in mental health (depression and anxiety) among HIV-positive gay and bisexual men (GBM) one year after diagnosis and the disparities in trajectories of mental health between them. The potential factors contributing to the disparities were also investigated. This was a one-year follow-up study focusing on the mental health of newly diagnosed HIV-positive individuals. Participants rated their depression, anxiety, stress, and social support levels at baseline and one year later. Information on the utilization of mental healthcare and the initiation of anti

Purpose: Experienced homophobia-negative treatment and perceptions that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) encounter because of their sexual orientations-may promote HIV infection among MSM. We conducted a rapid review and meta-analysis to examine experienced homophobia in relation to HIV infection risk. Methods: We searched Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts to acquire data from U.S. studies published during 1992-2017. Studies examined experienced homophobia in relation to sexual risk behavior, poor HIV care continuum engagement, and diagnosed HIV infe

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the UK. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of IPV, associations of socio-economic and psychosocial factors with IPV, and the association of IPV with depression and sexual behaviour, among GBMSM in the PROUD trial of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
METHODS: PROUD enrolled 544 HIV-negative participants in England from 2012 to 2014; participants were randomised to immediate or deferred PrEP. This analysis inclu

Purpose: Sexual minority youth are at increased risk for mental health problems and substance use, and accumulating evidence indicates that bisexual youth are at greatest risk. However, bisexual youth are not a homogenous group and scholars have called for greater attention to the intersections of multiple marginalized identities. As such, we examined racial/ethnic differences in mental health (sadness/hopelessness and suicidal ideation), substance use (cigarette use, binge drinking, marijuana use, and other illicit drug use), and bullying (in-person and electronic) among self-identified bisex

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) youth are overrepresented among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), and health disparities among LGBQ youth are well-documented. LGBQ youth are typically aggregated as a single sexual minority group; however, research suggests that bisexual youth may have greater mental health, substance use, and physical health risks relative to their gay and lesbian peers. In a probability sample of LGBQ YEH in Los Angeles County (n = 183), we examined subgroup differences in homelessness severity, depression, physical health, and substance use, focusing on d

Since FDA approval in 2012, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been adopted by key populations, including gay and bisexual men (GBM), to reduce their HIV transmission risk. Given that PrEP is optimally effective when taken as prescribed, it is critical to understand the adherence strategies GBM use. We conducted one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with GBM taking PrEP in 2015-2016 (n = 103). Using thematic analysis, we identified six adherence strategies, with most participants (84.3%) utilizing multiple strategies to maintain adequate adherence: (1) integrating PrEP into part of a dai

INTRODUCTION: The medical radiation sciences' (MRS) MedRadJournalClub attracts a global group of participants to monthly sessions to discuss selected journal articles. The September 2017 session explored the experiences of MRS professionals working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients. The aim of the chat was to establish staff educational preparation, how participants' organizations approached the issue, and what participants would do differently at work or at home in relation to this patient population after the chat.
METHOD: Data were extracted using the Twitter adv

This pilot study evaluated the use of smartphone ecological momentary assessments (EMA) for self-monitoring to optimize treatment outcomes among gay and bisexual men enrolled in an outpatient methamphetamine abuse treatment service program. Participants (N = 34) received EMA prompts five times daily to self-monitor their methamphetamine use, cravings, sexual risk behaviors, and associated triggers and affect throughout the 8-week treatment program. Participants were randomized into either a self-directed condition with access to a web-based EMA response visualization dashboard ("EMA + Dashboar

INTRODUCTION: Among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM), collinearity between polysubstance use and mental health concerns has obscured their combined effects on HIV risk with multivariable results often highlighting only one or the other.
METHODS: We used mediation and moderation analyses to examine the effects of polysubstance use and depressive symptoms on high-risk sex (i.e., condomless anal sex with serodiscordant/unknown status partner) in a sample of sexually-active GBM, aged ≥16 years, recruited in Metro Vancouver using respondent driven sampling.
