PURPOSE: To evaluate the characteristics of the essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm patients and the feasible treatment with botulinum toxin A.
METHODS: Thirty-four essential blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm patients were evaluated according to gender, ocular complaint, time of disease, treatment outcome and complications.

We applied a new blepharospasm clinical disability scale to the evaluation of blepharospasm surgery in a group of 138 patients. This scale analyzes six parameters of daily life, namely reading, watching television, household tasks, walking, employment, and driving. The patients had either essential blepharospasm or pretarsal dystonia. Frontalis suspension of the eyelid gave slightly better functional results than orbicularis resection in some patient subgroups.

NT 201 is a new development of Botulinum Toxin Type A free of complexing proteins. In this double-blind Phase III trial, we compared the efficacy and safety of NT 201 and BOTOX in patients suffering from blepharospasm. From April 1983 to April 1988, 381 botulinum toxin injections for lid spasms were administered to 106 patients. Sixty-nine had bilateral blepharospasm and 37 had hemifacial spasm.
