Carotid body paraganglioma (CBP) is a type neuroendocrine tumour arising from paraganglial chief cells of carotid body. Situated at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, it constitutes 0.5% of all body tumours. Though CBP's is most common paraganglioma of head and neck it is a rare neoplasm and requires a thorough examination for a proper diagnosis and therapeutic management. Several aspects of the relationship between maternal smoking and birth weights of infants are discussed. No satisfactory explanation for Yerushalmy's results has been given other than that low birth weight appears to relate more to the smoker than to the smoking. Recent studies by Silverman support this position. The possibility that nicotine may induce a physiologic response that serves to alleviate bioenergetic deficiency in some individuals should not be overlooked. In this view, both smoking and low birth weight are symptoms of deficient maternal bioenergetic systems.

GH is normally secreted in a pulsatile fashion. When GH is deficient, dwarfism is the result in both rodents and humans. An adenoviral vector containing the rat GH complementary DNA was used to induce constitutive GH expression in hepatocytes of GH-deficient lit/lit mice. Elevated serum GH increased circulating insulin-like growth factor I concentrations, corrected the growth deficiency, and normalized body composition. The results indicate that correction of the dwarf phenotype can be achieved by constitutive expression of GH at an ectopic site by gene transfer.
