Dental caries affects body weight, growth and quality of life in pre-school children.

The effect of a relatively common chronic disease, severe dental caries, affects young childrens' growth and well-being. Treating dental caries in pre-school children would increase growth rates and the quality of life of millions of children. Severe untreated dental caries is common in pre-school children in many countries. Children with severe caries weighed less than controls, and after treatment of decayed teeth there was more rapid weight gain and improvements in their quality of life. This may be due to dietary intake improving because pain affected the quantity and variety of food eaten

Body lift: an account of 200 consecutive cases in the massive weight loss patient.

BACKGROUND: The epidemic of obesity in the United States has led to a rapid increase in the number of bariatric procedures performed over the past several years. The dramatic changes to the torso following massive weight loss are only partially addressed by routine procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction. Circumferential body lifts or simultaneous abdominoplasty, thigh, and buttock lifts are becoming the method of choice for treating the postbariatric condition. In this article, the authors review the senior author's experience of 200 body lifts with massive weight loss individuals.

Weight change, body image, and quality of life in HIV disease: a pilot study.

Fat distribution alterations and lipodystrophy occur as part of a broad spectrum of body alterations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Recent advances in HIV therapies, including highly active antiretroviral therapy, contribute to these fat distribution alterations. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the relationships of weight change, body image, length of time with HIV/AIDS diagnosis, and quality of life in HIV disease. The sample consisted of 23 men with mean age of 42.2 years (SD = 8.2) and 17 women with mean age of 36.8 years

Liver volume in thalassaemia major: relationship with body weight, serum ferritin, and liver function.

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether body weight alone can adjust for the volume of liver in the calculation of the chelating dose in beta-thalassaemia major patients, who frequently have iron overload and hepatitis. OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis is that liver volume in children and adolescents suffering from beta-thalassaemia major is affected by ferritin level and liver function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five beta-thalassaemia major patients aged 7-18 years and 35 age- and sex-matched controls had liver volume measured by MRI. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and ferritin levels were o…

Dairy food consumption and body weight and fatness studied longitudinally over the adolescent period.

OBJECTIVE: Although research suggests that adolescents, particularly girls, may avoid dairy products due to concerns that these foods are 'f … cium consumption. CONCLUSION: Avoidance of dairy foods due to a possible association with relative body weight is not supported by these findings. We find no evidence that dairy food consumption is associated with BMI z-score or %BF during adolescence, but further research specifically designed to address this question is needed.

Comparison of conventional phototherapy and fiberoptic phototherapy in the very-low-body-weight infants.

Phototherapy is effectively employed for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, but it may influence the physiological hemodynamics of the infants, such as skin blood flow, insensible water loss and the redistribution of cardiac output. This is a retrospective chart review study involved totally 42 very low birth weight prematures(birth body weight less than 1500 gm, VLBW) who received conventional or fiberoptic phototherapy. Infants with congenital malformation, severe cardiorespiratory instability and the requirement of diuretics, inotropics or blood transfusion were excluded. The bod…

Effects of changes in body weight on carbohydrate metabolism, catecholamine excretion, and thyroid function.

BACKGROUND: Weight gain and loss increases and decreases energy expenditure, respectively, out of proportion to changes in metabolic mass. … related with percentage changes in energy expenditure and with each other. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in body weight were associated with changes in catecholamine excretion and thyroid hormones, which might-by virtue of the effects on energy expenditure-have favored a return to usual body weight. Weight gain induced more apparent insulin resistance in the obese th …

Body composition and cross-sectional areas of limb lean tissues in Olympic weight lifters.

The cross-sectional area (CSAs) of bone and muscle tissues in the forearm, upper arm, lower leg, and thigh and body composition were determined by B-mode ultrasound and underwater weighing methods, respectively for 56 college Olympic weight lifters and 28 age-matched non-athletes to investigate the magnitude of musculoskeletal development in the strength-trained athletes belonging to the weight-classified sports event. The average value of fat-free mass (FFM) for the weight lifters ranked 12.6 kg above the regression line of FFM on stature for untrained subjects. In the weight lifters, however

Twenty-five years of national service--changes in height, weight and body mass index.

The height and weight of 18-year-old Singapore National Service enlistees were extracted from computer records spanning 25 years (1967-1991). These were analysed for mean height, weight and body mass index (BMI) which overall show increases of 4.12 cm, 10.13 kg and 2.60 kg/m2 respectively. All ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Others) show a similar rising trend. While mean height appears to have stabilised in recent years, mean weight continues to rise. This is reflected in an increasing mean BMI. The proportion of 18-year-old male recruits with a BMI in the overweight range (> or = 2

Bulimia nervosa symptomatology and body image disturbance associated with distance running and weight loss.

To investigate the hypothesis that problems characteristic of eating disorders may often be associated with distance running, 20 women who had lost weight through distance running were compared with a control group who did not exercise and had not lost weight and a comparison group of bulimia nervosa patients. Dependent variables were measures of depression, bulimia nervosa symptomatology, and body image disturbance. No differences were found between the runner group and the normal controls. Bulimics differed from runners and controls on most measures. Thus, the results did not support the pro

Body weight gain after VMH lesions in adult female rats guanethidine-sympathectomized at birth.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in body weight gain produced by lesions of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) was studied in adult female rats that had been sympathectomized from birth for 3 weeks with daily injections of guanethidine (0.01 ml/g body weight) starting the second day after birth. Female littermates injected with 0.15 M NaCl served as controls. Body weight gain during the dynamic phase after the VMH lesion was the same in the sympathectomized and control groups of rats, whereas the treated rats gained weight at a slower rate than the controls in the sta…

Effect of subacute insecticide exposure on body weight, drug responses & electrical convulsions in mice.

Effect of subacute insecticide exposure was studied in male albino mice treated with phosphamidon, propoxur or aldrin at 1/40 LD50 dose intraperitoneally daily for 8 wk. The parameters studies included body weight, pentobarbitone (50 mg/kg) sleeping time, chlorpromazine (6 mg/kg) induced motor incoordination and convulsions induced by leptazol (100 mg/kg) and electrical stimulation (18 mA for 0.2 msec). While body weight and electrically induced convulsions were not affected, the effect of various drugs was significantly decreased. The observed changes may be due to the induction of hepatic dr…

Food intake and body weight changes in mice infected with metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps.

General nutritional effects on female CFLP mice harbouring larval Taenia crassiceps were investigated using groups of mice fed ad libitum on purified diets containing 2%, 4%, 8% and 16% (w/w) protein respectively. When uninfected and infected mice were compared over an experimental period of 20 weeks, it was established that a significantly higher proportion of uninfected mice survived the course of the experiment than infected mice. There was no evidence of the presence of the parasites having any effect on the overall food intake of the mice. Infected mice, however, were found to be signific

Does laxative abuse control body weight? A comparative study of purging and vomiting bulimics.

This study examines the daily food intake and eating habits of 30 bulimia nervosa patients of normal weight; 20 vomited daily and 10 purged daily. The aim was to measure and compare food intakes and to examine the belief that laxative abuse is an effective means of controlling body weight. The results indicate that the purgers control their weight by overall dietary restraint, not by the pharmacological action of the laxatives. The purgers' eating patterns were bulimic, but not gross: mean daily energy intake being in a normal range (2210 +/- 210 kcal/day). Binge-eating by the vomiters was of …

Disproportionate growth of organs and body weight following glucocorticoid treatment of the rat fetus.

The effects of pharmacologic doses of dexamethasone, betamethasone, and cortisone given to pregnant rats on gestation days 12 and 13 were st … ne. The analogues had widely different effects on organ growth and on the ratios of organ weight to body weight. The findings indicate that proportionate growth of fetal organs and body weight is disturbed by glucocorticoid treatment in rats.

Whole-Body Diffusion-Weighted Imaging With Background Body Signal Suppression for Primary Tumor Detection in Patients With Brain Metastases.

Diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression (DWIBS) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that enables noninvasive, radiation-free whole-body screening. By emphasizing diffusion-restricted regions while suppressing background signals, DWIBS has emerged as a potential alternative or complement to fludeoxyglucose-18 positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), particularly for the detection of primary tumors and metastases. Herein, we report two cases in which DWIBS highlighted suspicious lesions that guided targeted CT and biopsy, leading to the identifica
