Asynchronous Recovery of Body Composition After Curative Surgery for Gastric and Colorectal Cancer: A Prospective Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Postoperative recovery of body composition in patients with gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) is a complex and dynamic process. However, longitudinal recovery patterns across multiple physiological domains remain incompletely characterized. This study aimed to describe longitudinal changes in body composition over 12 months after curative surgery in patients with GC and CRC. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study evaluated serial changes in body composition parameters, including body weight, skeletal muscle index (SMI), phase angle (PhA), and the extra

Confusion over the core psychopathology of bulimia nervosa.

There has been particular confusion concerning two aspects of the psychopathology of bulimia nervosa: dissatisfaction with body shape and overvalued ideas about shape and weight. Whilst these features are closely related, they are nevertheless distinct. Body shape dissatisfaction is commonly found in these patients but is not necessarily present; whilst the over-valued ideas about shape and weight are a necessary diagnostic feature. Analysis of the relationship between these two features and depressed mood and self-esteem showed that, in the course of treatment, change in body shape dissatisfa

Fat talk frequency in high school women: Changes associated with participation in the Body Project.

The Body Project is an evidence-based eating disorder prevention program that aims to prevent the onset of eating disorders by challenging the thin-ideal and promoting body acceptance through dissonance-based activities. One of the key program targets is fat talk, the self-deprecating communication about dissatisfaction with one's weight and shape. Fat talk, family fat talk, and weight concern are associated with body image disturbance and eating disorder development, especially in adolescent girls. Despite this, there is a gap in the research that specifically evaluates the extent to which pa

From couch to Ironman 70.3: A three-year case study of weight loss and cardiometabolic adaptation revealed through continuous wearable monitoring.

This single-participant case study leverages 1,146 days of continuous monitoring to describe a three-year weight loss and fitness transformation in a highly motivated young adult male who achieved a 27.8% reduction in body weight and completed an Ironman 70.3 triathlon. Daily resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV; RMSSD), HRV coefficient of variation (HRV-CV), sleep, and physical activity were analyzed. Clinical biomarkers were evaluated, and body composition (DEXA) and maximal oxygen consumption ( ˙VO2max) were assessed after weight loss; dietary intake was not recorded. From

A qualitative insight into the experience of self-oriented body comparison in postpartum women.

The postpartum period is a high-risk time for body image disturbances among mothers, given the rapid physical, emotional, and environmental changes experienced. Sociocultural pressures for postpartum women to quickly return to their pre-pregnancy weight and shape are both well documented and associated with disordered eating symptomatology; however, no studies have qualitatively explored self-oriented body comparison postpartum, the experience of comparing one's postpartum body weight and shape to pre-pregnancy weight and shape. This study qualitatively examined postpartum women's body image w

Patterns of weight change after treatment for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined changes in weight and body mass index (BMI) at 5-year follow-up among women treated for bulimia nervosa. METHOD: The study comprised 80 women who had participated in a randomized clinical trial evaluating cognitive-behavior therapy for bulimia nervosa. The women had attended assessments at posttreatment and at 5-year follow-up while not pregnant. RESULTS: Changes in mean weight and BMI between posttreatment and 5-year follow-up were small in absolute terms and were not statistically significant. However, by the 5-year follow-up, approximately one half of

The right weight: body fat, menarche and ovulation.

Women with moderate weight loss (10-15% of ideal weight), as well as women with the severe weight loss of anorexia nervosa (30% of ideal weight), have secondary or primary amenorrhoea. A high proportion of well-trained dancers and athletes also have amenorrhoea, though weight may be in the normal range, since muscles are heavy (80% water, compared to 5-10% water in adipose tissue). The amenorrhoea is usually reversible with weight gain, decreased exercise or both. The amenorrhoea is due to hypothalamic dysfunction; the pituitary-ovary axis is intact, suggesting that this type of amenorrhoea is

Effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the body weight regulatory system in rats.

We studied the effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the defended body weight in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into three weight-matched groups: weight cyclers (n = 18), ad libitum-fed controls (n = 9), and maturity controls (n = 9). Cyclers underwent four rounds of 20% weight loss from 50% caloric restriction, each cycle followed by recovery to stable plateau weight on ad libitum feeding. Controls ate ad libitum. Maturity controls ate ad libitum and then weight cycled the final two rounds to evaluate the effect of age in later cycles. Cyclers' postdiet plate

Body composition and Hashimoto disease.

BACKGROUND: Body weight or BMI do not provide any information about the content of muscle tissue, water content, body fat and its distribution in the body. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with a change in body weight, but also its composition regardless of physical activity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the body composition of female patients diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (HD) and the body composition of healthy women who have never been treated before due to thyroid diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 47 women diagnosed with Hashimoto disease (HD) an

Effects of three weeks of mild sleep restriction implemented in the home environment on multiple metabolic and endocrine markers in healthy young men.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence for a causal relationship between sleep-loss and metabolism is derived primarily from short-term sleep deprivation studies in the laboratory. The objective of this study was to investigate whether small changes in sleep duration over a three week period while participants are living in their normal environment lead to changes in insulin sensitivity and other metabolic parameters. METHODS: Nineteen healthy, young, normal-weight men were randomised to either sleep restriction (habitual bedtime minus 1.5h) or a control condition (habitual bedtime) for three weeks. Weekly ass

Pulmonary function testing in obesity, pregnancy, and extremes of body habitus.

Knowing the effect body habitus can have on pulmonary function is important when there is a concern of an underlying respiratory impairment. The pattern of PFT abnormaLities can help distinguish an underlying ventilatory defect as deriving from the body habitus or from a second process. There are limitations, however. Individuals who are obese and have the same weight will likely have different degrees of impairment, for instance. It then becomes difficult to predict the effect body habitus will have in each patient. It therefore is vitally important to evaluate these patients using other clin

Peroneal neuropathy with foot drop after bariatric surgery: A neurosurgical perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common entrapment neuropathy of the lower extremity and most commonly results from compression of the peroneal nerve at the fibular head. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between peroneal neuropathy and rapid weight loss after bariatric surgery and to assess the outcomes of surgical decompression in patients presenting with foot drop. METHOD: Between 2020 and 2025, five patients underwent surgical treatment for foot drop due to peroneal neuropathy following bariatric surgery. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical evaluation, imaging, a

No evidence for changes in skeletal muscle mass or weight during first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Studies over the past 10 years strongly support an association between skeletal muscle mass (SMM) depletion and outcome in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Factors influencing SMM changes over time are, however, poorly studied. We analyzed the impact of SMM on overall survival and chemotherapy toxicities in mCRC patients treated with first-line chemotherapy. Changes in weight and body composition were evaluated during follow-up. METHODS: Patients enrolled in the randomized phase II ACCORD trial comparing two chemotherapy regimens were screened. Body composition parameters (SMM

In Vitro Fertilization induces reproductive changes in male mouse offspring and has multigenerational effects.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a non-coital method of conception used to treat human infertility. Although IVF is viewed as largely safe, it is associated with adverse outcomes in the fetus, placenta, and adult offspring life. Because studies focusing on the effect of IVF on the male reproductive system are limited, we used a mouse model to assess the morphological and molecular effects of IVF on male offspring. We evaluated three developmental stages: 18.5-day fetuses and 12- and 39-week-old adults. Regardless of age, we observed changes in testicular-to-body weight ratios, serum testosteron

The influence of nutritional and metabolic status on progression from asymptomatic HIV infection to AIDS-defining diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Changes in body weight and lean tissue increase morbidity and mortality during AIDS; however there are few data on the effect of alterations in nutrition and metabolism on disease progression at earlier stages of HIV infection. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether change in weight, lean tissue or skeletal muscle affects progression to AIDS; to assess prospectively the effects of recognized alterations in nutrition and metabolism in asymptomatic HIV-seropositive men on disease progression; and to examine prospectively changes in nutrition and metabolism at AIDS-defining diagnosis. Addictive behaviors and life problems before and after behavioral treatment of problem drinkers.

The broader impact of a behavioral self-control training intervention focusing on the reduction of alcohol consumption was examined in a sample of 93 problem drinkers (55 male). Individual life problems were assessed via the method of goal attainment scaling before and after treatment and at 3-6 months, 12 months and 24 months following termination. Alcohol and drug use, smoking and weight were also evaluated. At intake, women were more likely than men to be unmarried, married to a problem drinking spouse, or taking psychoactive prescription medication but less likely to be using illicit drugs

Genetic analysis of metabolic traits in an intercross between body weight-selected chicken lines.

A network of four interacting loci has been reported previously to influence growth in two lines of chickens divergently selected for body weight at 56 days of age. Located on chromosomes 3 (Growth4), 4 (Growth6), 7 (Growth9), and 20 (Growth12), they explained nearly half of the difference in body weight at selection age between the two lines. The original study reported effects on body weight and fat deposition, but no attempts were made to explore the effects of the network on other phenotypes measured in the F(2) population. In this study we conducted further analyses to evaluate the specif

The Effect of Treatment With PTH on Undercarboxylated Osteocalcin and Energy Metabolism in Hypoparathyroidism.

CONTEXT: Undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) has been shown to affect glucose metabolism in mice. We recently randomized patients with hypoparathyroidism to treatment with PTH or placebo and demonstrated a marked increase in total osteocalcin. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there was a similar increase in ucOC and whether that increase affected glucose metabolism. DESIGN: A 24-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial. SETTING: Ambulatory patients in a research facility. PATIENTS: Sixty-two patients aged 31-78 years with hypoparathyroidism, of which 58 completed the trial. INTERVENTIO

Preoperative weight gain might increase risk of gastric bypass surgery.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss improves the cardiovascular and metabolic risk associated with obesity. However, insufficient data are available about the health effects of weight gain, separate from the obesity itself. We sought to determine whether the changes in body weight before open gastric bypass surgery (OGB) would have a significant effect on the immediate perioperative hospital course. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 100 consecutive patients was performed to examine the effects of co-morbidities and body weight changes in the immediate preoperative period on the hospital length of …
