A method for calculating the grand average of a set of auditory brain-stem responses.

To calculate a grand average waveform for a set of auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs), no generally accepted method exists. Here, we evaluate a new method using temporal adjustment of the underlying ABRs. Compared to a method without temporal adjustment, the new method results in higher amplitudes of the individual waves in the grand average. The grand average produced by the method better represents the group mean wave-amplitudes because it reduces smearing of the individual waves caused by inter-subject latency variability.

Brain Pericytes Acquire Stemness via the Nrf2-Dependent Antioxidant System.

Pericytes (PCs) are a mural support cell population elongated at intervals along the walls of capillaries. Recent studies reported that PCs are multipotent cells that are activated in response to tissue injury and contribute to the regenerative process. Using a C.B-17 mouse model of ischemic stroke, it has been proposed that normal brain pericytes (nPCs) are converted to ischemic pericytes (iPCs), some of which function as multipotent stem cells. Furthermore, oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) promoted mesenchymal-epithelial transition in nPCs; however, nestin was not induced under OGD condition

Effects of renal sympathetic denervation on the stellate ganglion and brain stem in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Renal sympathetic denervation (RD) is a promising method of neuromodulation for the management of cardiac arrhythmia. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that RD is antiarrhythmic in ambulatory dogs because it reduces the stellate ganglion nerve activity (SGNA) by remodeling the stellate ganglion (SG) and brain stem. METHODS: We implanted a radiotransmitter to record SGNA and electrocardiogram in 9 ambulatory dogs for 2 weeks, followed by a second surgery for RD and 2 months SGNA recording. Cell death was probed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUN…

An exophytic brain stem glioblastoma in an elderly presenting as a cerebellopontine angle syndrome.

Exophytic brain stem gliomas are rare and are generally seen in paediatric population. These are usually low grade gliomas. We report a case of brainstem glioblastoma in an elderly patient presenting as a cerebellopontine mass.

The spectrum of neuromyelitis optica: a case of NMO with extensive brain stem involvement.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), regarded as a distinct clinical entity from multiple sclerosis (MS), is generally characterized by demyelinating lesions involving optic nerves and spinal cord with sparing of the brain. We report a case with initial clinical, radiological and serological features consistent with NMO, but with concomitant extensively clinical and radiological involvement of the brain stem. Although there are well defined criteria for NMO that restricts the lesions to optic nerves and spinal cord, the case presented here and the review of literature support the idea that NMO may pres…

Persistent diffusion abnormalities in the brain stem of three children with mitochondrial diseases.

We report 2 children (patients 1 and 2) with Kearns-Sayre syndrome and 1 (patient 3) with Leigh syndrome, who underwent serial diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) studies for 2.8 (patient 1), 4.2 (patient 2), and 1.0 years (patient 3). The DWI revealed the persistent hyperintense signals in the pontine and mesencephalic tegmenta. The apparent diffusion coefficient in the affected regions remained constantly low, suggesting that cytotoxic edema and spongiform degenerations may compose these brain stem lesions.

Pathological yawning as a presenting symptom of brain stem ischaemia in two patients.

Two cases of brain stem stroke involving the upper pons and the ponto-mesencephalic junction presented with transient excessive pathological yawning, associated with gait ataxia and in one subject with upper limb and facial hemiparesis. A causal relation is hypothesised between the brain stem lesion and pathological yawning, possibly related to denervation hypersensitivity of a putative brain stem yawn centre. Excessive yawning may herald brain stem ischaemia.

[A case of a subclavian-vertebral junction arterial aneurysm with brain stem thromboembolism].

Subclavian artery aneurysm is relatively rare, but, we can scarcely find mention in the literature of a subclavian-vertebral junction aneurysm. We report a case of a 73-year-old man with a left subclavian-vertebral junction arterial aneurysm of 11 mm in diameter which caused a brain stem thromboembolism. He showed right hemiparesis and dysarthria on admission. On the 5th day after admission, his hemiparesis worsened and he could not even walk. In order to prevent further embolic attack on the vertebro-basilar system and rupture from the aneurysm, we embolized the aneurysm successfully with som…

The potential of stem cells for the treatment of brain tumors and globoid cell leukodystrophy.

Stem cells of different origin are under careful scrutiny as potential new tools for the treatment of several neurological diseases. The major focus of these reaserches have been neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington Chorea or Parkinson Disease (Shihabuddin et al., 1999). More recently attention has been devoted to their use for brain repair after stroke (Savitz et al., 2002). In this review we will focus on the potential of stem cell treatments for glioblastoma multiforme (Holland, 2000), the most aggressive primary brain tumor, and globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease), a me

[Gastric myoelectric activity disturbance in patients with traumatic lesions of the brain stem].

The aim of the study was to evaluate effects of cranio-cerebral trauma on gastric myoelectric activity. Twenty four patients hospitalized in the Department of Neurotraumatology, Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University were compared with a control group of 16 healthy volunteers matched for gender and age. Their gastric myoelectric activity was measured using standard cutaneous electrodes with Synectics, a Swedish system of data storage and analysis. Results of the study were analyzed at the Department of Pathophysiology, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University. In the electrogastrog

Involuntary tonic spasms of a limb due to a brain stem lacunar infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although repetitive involuntary movements are a well-recognized manifestation of carotid occlusive disease, similar … abnormality. The abnormal movements responded well to treatment with oral diazepam. CONCLUSIONS: A brain stem lacunar infarction may be associated with involuntary tonic limb spasms clinically similar to those reported as paroxysmal symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

[Atrial septum aneurysm as the cause of a thromboembolic infarction of the brain stem and cerebellum?].

A 32-year-old woman with migraine for several years again had a migraine attack with headache, nausea, vomiting and eye-muscle disorder, 14 days after an uncomplicated delivery. Within 24 hours a left-dominant hemiparesis developed, followed 12 hours later by tonic-clonic seizure and deep unconsciousness (Glasgow score: 3); the patient could not be aroused. Cranial computed tomography revealed extensive infarction of the brainstem and cerebellum. Angiography demonstrated occlusion of the basilar artery but not other abnormalities of other vessels. There was no evidence for vascular anomalies a

Effect of hearing loss of cochlear origin on the auditory brain stem response.

Auditory brain stem response (ABR) testing is widely used to detect lesions of the auditory neural pathways. The ABR waves depend not only on the integrity of the neural pathways, but also on the condition of the cochlea. To properly interpret the ABR response, it is necessary to understand the effects of cochlear hearing loss on the ABR wave latencies. We studied two populations of subjects with cochlear hearing loss: one with varying degrees of high-frequency hearing loss and the other with varying degrees of flat configuration hearing loss. The degree of cochlear hearing loss was quantified…
