Associations of diet and breed with recurrence of calcium oxalate cystic calculi in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term risk of recurrence of calcium oxalate (CaOx) cystic calculi in dogs of various breeds fed 1 of 2 therapeutic diets. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. Animals-135 dogs with a history of CaOx cystic calculi. PROCEDURES: Medical records for 4 referral hospitals were searched to identify dogs that had had CaOx cystic calculi removed. Owners were contacted and medical records evaluated to obtain information on postoperative diet, recurrence of signs of lower urinary tract disease, and recurrence of cystic calculi. Dogs were grouped on the basis of breed (hig

Breed distribution of SOD1 alleles previously associated with canine degenerative myelopathy.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports associated 2 mutant SOD1 alleles (SOD1:c.118A and SOD1:c.52T) with degenerative myelopathy in 6 canine breeds. … SOD1:c.52T allele is rare and appears to be limited to Bernese Mountain Dogs. We also conclude that breeding to avoid the production of SOD1:c.118A homozygotes is a rational strategy.

Oral infestation with leech Limnatis nilotica in two mixed-breed dogs.

Leeches are bloodsucking hermaphroditic parasites that attach to tissues using two muscular suckers, ingest large amounts of blood and may cause severe anaemia in the host. Two four-month-old mixed-breed dogs (one bitch and one male) were referred with anorexia, retching, hypersalivation and bleeding from the oral cavity. On physical examination, two live leeches were detected on the ventral aspect of the tongue of the bitch and one in a similar position in the male. The leeches were gently detached and removed using Adson tissue forceps after applying vinegar over the area. Microcytic hypochr

Effects of restricted feed intake on heat energy by different goat breeds.

Sixteen Boer goat doelings, 16 Spanish doelings, and 8 Angora doelings and 8 wethers, 283, 316, and 330 d of age initially (SEM = 5.0), respectively, were used to evaluate effects of nutrient restriction on heat energy (HE). During the first and second 10-wk phases, 8 animals of each breed were fed a 50% concentrate pelletized diet at a level adequate for maintenance and moderate energy accretion (CONT). Other animals were fed approximately 50% of these amounts in phase 1 relative to initial BW, followed by the greater level of feeding in phase 2 based on initial or actual BW when greater (RES

Acute pancreatitis attributed to dietary indiscretion in a female mixed breed canine.

A female, mixed-breed dog was presented with signs of abdominal discomfort and vomiting of 24 h duration following an episode of dietary indiscretion. Clinical signs, previous medical history, and diagnostic tests supported a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Specific and supportive treatment was instituted, and clinical signs resolved 10 d after presentation.

The naked truth: Sphynx and Devon Rex cat breed mutations in KRT71.

Hair is a unique structure, characteristic of mammals, controlling body homeostasis, as well as cell and tissue integration. Previous studies in dog, mouse, and rat have identified polymorphisms in Keratin 71 (KRT71) as responsible for the curly/wavy phenotypes. The coding sequence and the 3' UTR of KRT71 were directly sequenced in randomly bred and pedigreed domestic cats with different pelage mutations, including hairless varieties. A SNP altering a splice site was identified in the Sphynx breed and suggested to be the hairless (hr) allele, and a complex sequence alteration, also causing a s

Dog breed stereotype and exposure to negative behavior: effects on perceptions of adoptability.

The purpose of the study was to determine if brief exposure to a dog behaving badly or in a friendly manner affects subsequent perceptions of the target dog's and other dogs' adoptability. Participants viewed a videotape of an adoptable German shepherd behaving either aggressively or prosocially and were then asked to rate the characteristics and adoptability of the same and different dogs. The results showed that people who saw the aggressive behavioral schema perceived only the target dog and a dog of the same breed to be significantly less adoptable than dogs of other breeds (p<.01). Result

Nutritional risks to large-breed dogs: from weaning to the geriatric years.

Distinctive risk factors for disease are identifiable throughout life stages of large- and giant-breed dogs. From weaning to maturity, improper nutrition is linked to developmental skeletal diseases. As large dogs mature, skeletal diseases and obesity can lead to osteoarthritis. These dogs are difficult to manage when orthopedic or osteoarthritic disease affects mobility and quality of life, thereby increasing the risk of early death. Gastric dilatation and volvulus is another disease that is leading cause of death in large- and giant-breed dogs. Management of health, including proper nutritio

Sequential measurements of the tibial plateau angle in large-breed, growing dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the earliest age that canine tibial plateau angles (TPAs) can be reliably measured and determine whether TPAs change during long bone growth. ANIMALS: 10 Labrador Retrievers and 20 Labrador Retriever-hound crossbreeds. PROCEDURE: Stifle joints were radiographed every 2 months from 8 weeks of age to radiographic closure of the tibial physes. Four examiners radiographically evaluated TPA, physeal closure status (ie, complete or incomplete) of the proximal and distal tibial physis, and whether anatomic TPA measurement landmarks were sufficiently visible (LSV) or insuffi

The influence of age and breeding conditions on the number and proliferation of intraepithelial lymphocytes in pigs.

The number and subset composition of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) were studied in pigs in different age groups ranging from 1 day to 4.5 years. There were no major differences between the numbers of IEL in the jejunum and ileum. The postnatal increase of IEL largely depended on the breeding conditions: in germ-free animals there was a constant level, while in conventionally bred pigs the numbers increased more obviously than in specified pathogen-free (SPF) pigs. As the numbers of IEL can rise due to increased influx from other organs, decreased emigration, decreased apoptosis or local pr…

The use of carrion as breeding sites by the blowfly Lucilia sericata and other Calliphoridae.

To examine the species composition of flies breeding in carrion in the field, the carcasses of mice and quail were exposed on sheep farms in the South West of England. Calliphora vicina was the dominant species of Diptera; 19,294 individuals emerged from 175 of the 241 infested carcasses recovered. Lucilia sericata emerged from only 39 of the infested carcasses, at a median of 10 adults per infested carcass. Other species of Lucilia present were L.ampullacea, L.caesar and L.illustris. The highest number of L.sericata emerged from carcasses placed in open pasture, the highest numbers of C.vicin…

Susceptibility of three breeds of Ugandan goats to experimental infection with Trypanosoma congolense.

This study has indicated that differences in susceptibility to Trypanosoma congolense infection exist among the 3 main breeds of goats in Uganda namely, Kigezi, Mubende and Small East African (SEA). The Kigezi goats appeared to be the most susceptible suffering more severe anaemia, greater retardation of growth and more deaths than the other 2 breeds following experimental infection with Try-panosoma congolense. The Small East African goats appeared to be least susceptible. Following treatment after 84 days of infection, the SEA goats responded much better than the other 2 breeds. By 4 weeks a

[Retinal and corneal dysplasias in the Yorkshire terrier and other dog breeds in Austria].

Mother and son of a Yorkshire Terrier family showed excessive multifocal retinal dysplasia (RD1) and geographical retinal dysplasia (RD2), intra- and preretinal hemorrhages partial and total retinal detachment (total RD/RD3), residues of the pupillary membrane and as a newness in this combination a geographical, subepithelial corneal opacity, composed of small dots. One, not examined son of the same litter was congenitally blind. Similar corneal opacities were also found in two Rough Collies affected with CEA, RD, and microphthalmia, a young German Wirehair Pointer with primary absolute glauco

Evidence of molecular heterogeneity for generalised glycogenosis between and within breeds of cattle.

Northern analyses revealed normal levels of acidic alpha-glucosidase mRNA in cultured fibroblasts from a Shorthorn calf affected with glycogenosis but a gross deficiency in an affected Brahman calf. Analyses of acidic alpha-glucosidase activity, relative to that of other lysosomal enzymes, in blood mononuclear cells revealed greater variation within and between Brahman herds than Shorthorn herds. A Msp1 restriction fragment length polymorphism associated with glycogenosis in Brahmans was not found in Shorthorns. These results are considered in relation to molecular heterogeneity for AAG defici

[Comparison of experimental trypanosomiasis in various breeds of small ruminants in Burkina Faso].

Twenty-four dwarf Djallonké sheep and goats, and 16 Sahelian Fulani sheep and goats, were inoculated with strains of Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense to compare their degree of susceptibility to trypanosomosis. One animal from each breed was used as a control. Anaemia was observed in all inoculated animals. In the group of animals inoculated with T. vivax, 1 Djallonké goat out of 6, 3 Sahelian goats out of 4 and 2 Fulani sheep out of 4 died within the experimental period of 16 weeks. One single Sahelian Fulani sheep out of 4 died among animals inoculated with T. congolense. During

Effect of nutrition, age and size on compensatory growth in two breeds of steers.

Compensatory gain in cattle was studied to determine if age, previous rate of gain or size were factors of importance. A factorial experiment was conducted with growing diet regimen (control vs restricted), age [spring-born (older) vs fall-born (younger)] and breed (Angus vs Charolais) as the factors. During a growing phase, the two diets, (control = dehydrated alfalfa pellets; restricted = cubed grass-alfalfa hay, cottonseed hulls and soybean meal) were fed to both the older and younger steers of each breed to provide groups of similar age but different weights (growing regimen within age) an

Depressed incidence of oestrus in ewes with clover disease at the beginning of the breeding season.

The incidence of oestrus was depressed in ewes with permanent clover infertility running on non-oestrogenic pasture, particularly in the first part of the breeding season. The depression was due to the failure of some ewes to display oestrus, and to a more erratic pattern of oestrous activity in the other ewes. The incidence of oestrus was restored to normal by treatment with progesterone. In contrast, the incidence of oestrus was reduced in affected ewes grazing in oestrogenic pasture.
