OBJECTIVE: We investigated clinical patterns of crotaline envenomation presenting to a tertiary-care academic hospital in Central California over a 10-year period. METHODS: An IRB-approved, retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients diagnosed with snakebite from December 2000 to December 2010. Despite the steady decline of smoking rates in California, over 200,000 children under age 12 live in homes where smoking is allowed, and another 742,000 live with an adult or adolescent smoker. Ambient air quality data were analyzed to empirically evaluate the effects of reductions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions on weekday and weekend levels of ozone (O3; 1991-1998) and particulate NO3- (1980-1999) in southern California. Wound botulism in California, 1951-1998: recent epidemic in heroin injectors.

California has reported most of the world's wound botulism (WB) cases and nearly three-fourths of the cases reported in the United States. We reviewed the clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory features of WB. From the first case in 1951, through 1998, a total of 127 cases were identified-93 in the last 5 years. This report describes efforts in progress to meet the needs of opium smoking Mien immigrants in Oakland, California. Translating concepts of addiction and recovery into terms that are culturally relevant constitutes the basis for efforts to assist the Mien to adjust to an opium-free lifestyle. The acceptability and utility of clonidine, acupuncture, methadone, counseling, support groups, and other medical services are discussed.
