Focal hepatosplenic candidiasis has been recognized with increasing frequency in recent years. We reviewed the cases of eight patients seen between 1982 and 1985, and information on 60 patients whose cases have been reported in the world literature. Though several pathologic processes can produce large denuded skin lesions in very low birthweight infants, trauma is often diagnosed without further investigation. Failure to consider other causes may prevent institution of appropriate specific treatment and may contribute to the development of serious complications, as described in the present case report of a premature infant with congenital cutaneous candidiasis.

Seven young men developed similar manifestations of disseminated candidiasis after a single episode of intravenous heroin abuse. Sequential development of lesions of the eye, skin, and bone or costal cartilage was noted within 10 days after injection. Skin lesions were confined to the scalp and other hair bearing areas. The frequency of genito-crural candidiasis in infants presenting diaper rash, as well as the possible influence of bacterial flora in this region on the pathogenicity of Candida was studied. In a double-blind study of the treatment of vaginal candidiasis, miconazole nitrate gave a cure-rate of 88 per cent. (29 out of 33) compared with 58 per cent. (21 out of 36) using chlordantoin. Although approximately two-thirds of the patients who responded did so to a 10-day course of treatment, the different rates of cure with these preparations at this stage were not statistically significant. However, when a second course of treatment was given to those women who still had proven candidiasis, the overall cure-rate with miconazole was significantly greater than that with chlordantoin.

Of 300 female patients seen in a Venereal Diseases clinic, 84 (28-0 per cent) were found to be harbouring Candida albicans or C. parapsilosis in the genital tract and 33 per cent of these patients had clinical signs of vulvovaginitis. Of the 84 patients, 71-4 per cent harboured yeasts in the ano-rectal tract; of the remaining 216 patients, 25-9 per cent harboured yeasts in the ano-rectal tract. There was no evidence to suggest that the incidence of yeasts in the mouth, ano-rectal or genital tracts changed with age or use of oral contraception.
