3D printed sodium alginate/gelatin/tannic acid/calcium chloride scaffolds laden bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to repair defective thyroid cartilage plate.

Due to the absence of blood vessels, cartilage exhibits extremely limited self-repair capacity. Currently, repairing laryngeal cartilage defects, resulting from conditions such as laryngeal tumors, injury, and congenital structural abnormalities, remains a significant challenge in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Previous research has often focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of synthetic materials. However, their low biological activity and weak cell adhesion necessitate compensatory measures. This study aims to capitalize on the advantages of natural materi

National, clinical cohort study of late effects among survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: the ALL-STAR study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: More than 90% of patients diagnosed with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) today will survive. However, half of the survivors are expected to experience therapy-related chronic or late occurring adverse effects, reducing quality of life. Insight into underlying risk trajectories is warranted. The aim of this study is to establish a Nordic, national childhood ALL survivor cohort, to be investigated for the total somatic and psychosocial treatment-related burden as well as associated risk factors, allowing subsequent linkage to nation-wide public health registers. Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are more prevalent in Canadians of South Asian than European ancestry inhabiting the National Capital Region of Canada.

The US Institute of Medicine defined serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) cut point values of 30 nmol/L and 40 nmol/L were used to assess the vitamin D status of South Asian and European Canadians of self-identified ancestry living in the National Capital Region of Canada. Serum 25OHD values were measured in the spring and fall of 2012 to represent status during the winter and summer months, respectively. A total of 1238 measurements were obtained from 669 participants (49% South Asian ancestry): some participants were measured only once (spring or fall). Median 25OHD values were significantly hi

The anatomical reduction of a moderate or severe stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis by modified Dunn subcapital osteotomy using the Ganz approach: functional and radiological outcomes.

AIMS: This study analysed the clinical and radiological outcome of anatomical reduction of a moderate or severe stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) treated by subcapital osteotomy (a modified Dunn osteotomy) through the surgical approach described by Ganz. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 31 patients (32 hips; 16 females and five males; mean age 14.3 years) with SCFE. On the Southwick classification, ten were of moderate severity (head-shaft angle > 30° to 60°) and 22 were severe (head-shaft angle > 60°). Each underwent open reduction and internal fixation using an i

Predictive Significance of Peripheral Blood Smears in Patients with Fever of Unknown Origin: A Retrospective Study of 2871 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a common manifestation and diagnostic problem especially in primary care. Pointing out a diagnosis of FUO often requires numerous noninvasive and invasive procedures. Peripheral blood (PB) smear examination frequently provides many timely and valuable diagnostic clues in various disorders. Few assessments of PB smear morphologic examinations used in the diagnostic evaluation of FUO have been reported. METHODS: To determine whether PB smears have important roles in exploring the causes of FUO, we collected PB smears of 2871 FUO patients from Beijing

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common adolescent hip disorder. The etiology of SCFE includes biomechanical and biochemical factors. SCFEs are classified as stable and unstable and are more common in boys than girls and in certain racial groups; most children with SCFEs are obese. Bilateral SCFEs may have a simultaneous or sequential presentation. Imaging studies show a posterior slip of the epiphysis relative to the metaphysis, seen early on lateral radiographs. The most common and effective initial treatment for stable SCFEs is in situ central single-screw fixation; other optio

Chronic asymptomatic contralateral wrist scapholunate dissociation.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a series of six patients who presented with scapholunate dissociation, with no significant contralateral antecedent trauma and no rheumatoid arthritis or congenital ligamentous laxity. Such patients may present with pain or a snapping/popping sensation in one wrist, undergo radiographs of both wrists, and are discovered to have scapholunate gapping bilaterally. The literature contains few reports of this condition, and this series of six is a relatively large one for this infrequently reported condition. METHODS: The six charts were reviewed retrospectively; eac

Bone disease in patients receiving growth hormone.

Recent expansion of the use of recombinant growth hormone (GH) to non-GH-deficient patients demands close attention to possible complications in these patients, including effects on bone, recent studies on the use of GH in children with chronic renal failure (CRF) provide some early data. Animal models demonstrate that GH stimulates chondrocyte proliferation. Experimental data further suggest that GH can weaken the epiphyseal plate. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been reported in GH-deficient patients, having been detected before, during and after GH therapy. In CRF patients trea

Is the acetabulum retroverted in slipped capital femoral epiphysis?

BACKGROUND: Recent biplanar radiographic studies have demonstrated acetabular retroversion and increased superolateral femoral head coverage in hips with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), seemingly divergent from earlier CT-based studies suggesting normal acetabular version. QUESTION/PURPOSES: We therefore asked: Are there differences in (1) acetabular version at the superior ¼ of the acetabular dome (AV(sup)), (2) acetabular version at the center of the femoral head (AV(cen)), and (3) superolateral femoral head coverage (lateral center-edge angle [LCEA]) among affected SCFE hips, una

THARIES surface replacements: a review of the first 100 cases.

The first 100 cases of the 135 THARIES surface replacement procedures with 4--32 months follow-up, are evaluated in terms of clinical results, radiographic information and complications. The short but detailed follow-up suggests that this procedure was an excellent alternative for the younger and more active population. The overall hip ratings (pain, walking and function) and range of motion are comparable to that of stem-type total hip replacements. When the THARIES and conventional hip results are further compared in 34 patients matched by sex and age for 3 major etiological groups (osteoart

Association of routine hematological parameters with the development of monoclonal gammopathies: a case-control study of 134,740 patients : Resubmitted to annals of Hematology 26 March 2024.

The diagnosis of multiple myeloma requires detection of paraproteinemia and confirmation of monoclonal bone marrow infiltration, along with signs of end-organ damage. Despite the increasing prevalence, serum paraproteinemia is not routinely measured. We examined the relationship between alterations in routine hematological parameters and the development of paraproteinemia in a case-control study. Data was retrieved from a laboratory database in the capital region of Denmark between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2022. Patients were included if they had a test for paraproteinemia (n = 134,740) and at lea

Primary Hyperparathyroidism From Ectopic Parathyroid Adenoma in a 12-Year-Old With Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

Primary hyperparathyroidism has been reported in pediatric patients presenting with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), but never in patients with ectopic parathyroid adenoma. A 12-year-old boy with obesity and autism spectrum disorder presented with a limp and was found to have bilateral SCFE. Calcium was elevated to 12.3 mg/dL with parathyroid hormone (PTH) of 1191 pg/mL. Neck ultrasound revealed no parathyroid adenoma. He was discharged following bilateral surgical pinning with plans for outpatient workup. Repeat labs 5 days later demonstrated calcium had risen to 16.7 mg/dL. Techneti

A constellation of orthopaedic deformities in connection with cartilage oligomeric matrix protein mutation.

BACKGROUND: Trendelenburg's gait can be observed in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, antalgic gait observed in osteoarthropathy and waddling gait is usually seen in genu varum and circumduction gait in patients with genu valgum. Disabling pain was a prime manifestation in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Limited joint range of motion with an inability to bear full weight on an affected extremity with swaying and wide-based gait is seen in patients with malalignment of the lower limbs. All the above-mentioned deformities have been labelled as idiopathic. The main objective of this article i
