Long-term survival of patients with congenital heart disease has dramatically improved during the last 50 years and the number of adults with congenital heart disease is therefore increasing in all developed countries. Emphysematous cystitis is a rare disease characterized by the presence of gas in the bladder wall and/or cavity. It predominates in diabetic women and its clinical symptoms are varied. We report a case of emphysematous cystitis in an unbalanced diabetic patient, discovered at the stage of septic shock and multivisceral failure following a cardiac decompensation with a rapidly unfavorable evolution. We suggest a probable role of low cardiac output in the genesis of this pathology in some patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is being performed with increasing frequency in patients aged 80 years and older.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the long and short-term results of surgery in this age group.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 202 consecutive patients aged 80 years or older who underwent cardiac surgery between 1991 and 1999, Ninety-six operations (48%) were urgent.

We and others have previously cloned several cDNAs of human cardiac troponin T (cTnT), demonstrating the multiplicity of cTnT isoforms in the human heart.
