Molecular characterization of Heterodoxus spiniger collected from dogs on St. Kitts in the Caribbean.

Heterodoxus spiniger is a louse commonly found on dogs in tropical and subtropical regions including Africa, America and Asia. However, its distribution on the Caribbean islands and DNA sequence are scarce. In the current study, H. spiniger was collected from two client-owned dogs on St. Kitts in the Caribbean. Total DNAs were individually extracted from male and female adult lice from each dog. Duplex PCR was performed to simultaneously amplify 18S rRNA and mitochondrial cox1 from total DNAs followed by simplex PCR for individual targets using duplex PCR products as templates. PCR amplicons w

Sickle cell disease in Uganda: a time for action.

OBJECTIVES: To draw attention to the extent of homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease as a public health problem in Uganda where a mean 20% frequency of the sickle cell trait implies that 25,000 babies with SS disease are born each year. To highlight the dangers of applying interventions developed in non-malarial areas to regions where malaria may change the natural history and outcome of sickle cell disease. DATA SOURCES: The published literature from Africa and from the US and Caribbean in populations of African ancestry. STUDY SELECTION: The world literature especially, that derived from the

Invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans): a potential human health threat for ciguatera fish poisoning in tropical waters.

Invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans) have rapidly expanded in the Western Atlantic over the past decade and have had a significant negative impact on reef fish biodiversity, habitat, and community structure, with lionfish out-competing native predators for resources. In an effort to reduce this population explosion, lionfish have been promoted for human consumption in the greater Caribbean region. This study examined whether the geographical expansion of the lionfish into a known ciguatera-endemic region can pose a human health threat for ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). More than …

Zidovudine and interferon-alpha treatment induces a high response rate and reduces HTLV-1 proviral load and VEGF plasma levels in patients with adult T-cell leukemia from North East Iran.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is endemic in southern Japan, the Caribbean, intertropical Africa, and Brazil. Recently north east Iran, particularly the region of Mashhad, has been recognized as a new endemic region. ATLL is an aggressive T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. Patients with ATLL have high plasma levels of VEGF that induce angiogenesis. Prognosis of ATLL remains poor because of immunosuppression and intrinsic resistance to chemotherapy. Important advances in the treatment of ATLL were reported with the combination

Burden of serious fungal infections in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic (DR) is the second largest Caribbean nation and, with Haiti, the DR accounts for nearly three-quarters of the cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the Caribbean region and the highest rates of TB in the Americas. The present study estimated the burden of serious fungal infections and some other mycoses in the DR. The data were extracted from the World Health Organization Stop Tuberculosis (WHO STOP TB) program, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and searches for relevant literature via MEDLINE, PubMed, MedFacts, and so on. The chro…

First report of typical Brazilian Toxoplasma gondii genotypes from isolates of free-range chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) circulating in the state of Paraíba, Northeast Brazil.

This study evaluated, for the first time, the genetic diversity of Toxoplasma gondii isolates from free-range chickens from the state of Paraíba, Northeast Brazil. Tissue samples from 33 chickens from properties in five municipalities of Paraíba (Esperança, Olho d'Água, Malta, Monteiro, and Patos) were bioassayed in mice. The brains of mice infected with T. gondii cysts were used for DNA extraction and genotyping. Genotyping was performed using 11 PCR-RFLP markers and 15 microsatellite (MS) markers. Complete genotyping results were obtained for 29 isolates, with nine genotypes detected by RFLP

Antiretroviral Adherence Perspectives of Pregnant and Postpartum Women in Guyana.

The Caribbean region has the second highest HIV prevalence after Sub-Saharan Africa. Guyana's adult HIV prevalence is 1.9% among pregnant women, with women accounting for an estimated 58% of all persons living with HIV. However, there are few studies on ART adherence in the Caribbean, none from Guyana, and none focusing on adherence in pregnancy and the postpartum period. The objective of this study was to explore the perspectives of HIV-infected pregnant and postpartum women and healthcare providers in Guyana about barriers and facilitators to ART adherence. Data was collected using semi-stru…

Case report on helminth parasites of a necropsied Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Belize.

Sirenians are parasitized by a number of nematodes and trematodes, most which appear to be host specific. Reports of parasitism in the West Indian Manatee, Trichechus manatus, exist for several regions within the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea, but there is a lack of parasitic data existing for the manatee subspecies living in the coastal waters of Belize. Herein, we report the first published record of parasites found in a deceased adult male Antillean manatee, Trichechus manatus manatus, recovered in the Placencia Lagoon, Belize. A thorough necropsy was performed w

Mansonella ozzardi and its vectors in the New World: an update with emphasis on the current situation in Haiti.

Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) is a little studied filarial nematode. This human parasite, transmitted by two families of dipteran vectors, biting midges (most of them members of the genus Culicoides) and blackflies (genus Simulium), is endemic to the Neotropical regions of the New World. With a patchy geographical distribution from southern Mexico to north-western Argentina, human infection with M. ozzardi is highly prevalent in some of the Caribbean islands, along riverine communities in the Amazon Basin, and on both sides of the border between Bolivia and Argentina. Studies co

Ciguatera fish poisoning.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is the most common foodborne illness related to fin fish consumption and is endemic throughout the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific regions. The clinical picture is characterized by a variety of gastrointestinal, neurologic and, occasionally, cardiovascular symptoms. Patients with bradycardia and/or hypotension may require urgent care. Neurologic symptoms tend to be the most distinctive and enduring and include sensory changes such as generalized pruritus, circumoral numbness and reversal of hot and cold sensation. Intravenous mannitol has evolved as a unique remedy for pati

Schistosomiasis--An unusual cause of abdominal pseudotumor.

Schistosomiasis is a common parasitic disease in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. It is the second most common parasitic infection of humans after malaria. Acute and chronic clinical presentations of S. monsoni are well described. Presentation as a pseudotumor is considered rare. We present a case of a 58-year-old Nigerian who presented with recurrent abdominal pain and abdominal mass of one-year duration. Stool was negative for schisostomal eggs, but histological specimen obtained from surgical resection of part of the caecum showed S. man

Prevalence of Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacilli from Intensive Care Units from Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) represent a critical threat to patients in intensive care units (ICUs), where limited therapeutic options contribute to elevated mortality. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the epidemiological burden of CR-GNB remains insufficiently characterized due to fragmented surveillance systems. This systematic review aimed to synthesize pooled prevalence estimates of CR-GNB among Gram-negative isolates recovered from ICUs across LAC countries. Methods: This systematic review was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD420251177

Virulence of Burkholderia pseudomallei Strains from Western Hemisphere and Africa in Mice.

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is an emerging disease in the United States and was declared endemic to the Gulf Coast region in 2022. Melioidosis has been sporadically reported in the American continents, the Caribbean, and more recently in Africa. We conducted lethal dose analyses in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice exposed to small particle aerosols of B. pseudomallei strains from the Western Hemisphere and Africa. Those isolates exhibit a variety of virulence patterns, including rapidly-lethal disease and delayed onset of fatal disease. We found that the isolates we tested grew si

HTLV-I-associated lymphoma presenting as mycosis fungoides in an HTLV-I non-endemic area: a viro-molecular study.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is endemic in the Caribbean region, south-western Japan and Africa, and is associated with tropical spastic paraparesis and adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL). Cutaneous forms of ATLL are sometimes indistinguishable from other cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL). We report a woman living in a non-endemic area for HTLV-I, with no risk factors for viral infection, who developed mycosis fungoides-like ATLL. The findings underline the usefulness of molecular biological techniques in distinguishing between mycosis fungoides and ATLL. We emphasize the nee…
