Localized infection of the nasal or paranasal cavities caused by Aspergillus spp or Penicillium spp was diagnosed in 3 cats. Clinical signs included chronic mucopurulent nasal discharge, epistaxis, and mandibular lymphadenopathy. Rhinoscopic and diagnostic imaging findings were compatible with severe inflammation of the nasal mucosa and destruction of the turbinates. Fungal plaques were observed rhinoscopically in 2 cats, and histologic examination of biopsy specimens revealed fungal colonies with surrounding inflammatory infiltrates in all 3. Results of fungal culture were negative for all 3 …

Although there are over 250 zoonotic diseases, only 30-40 of them involve dogs and cats. Transmission of zoonotic infections occurs via bites, scratches or touch; exposure to saliva, urine or feces; inhalation of particles or infectious aerosols; contact with a transport or intermediate host (e.g. ticks, fleas); or exposure to contaminated water, soil or vegetation. This paper summarizes the most important common zoonotic dermatological diseases of dogs and cats. The most common dermatological zoonoses are flea and tick infestations and the diseases they transmit; dermatophytosis; and mite inf…

This study sought to evaluate a series of clinical and radiological findings on spinal trauma in cats and the outcome that emerged from conservative or surgical treatment using 2 types of spinal stapling: stabilization using a Steinmann pin and coated polypropylene. Case records were reviewed for their diagnostic approaches on the basis of physical and neurological conditions, and concurrent disorders in addition to spinal trauma. Radiological examinations of the vertebral column were carried out using survey radiography, myelography and epidurography. All cases were classified according to et…

Radiographs of the stifles of 6 species of 34 large, non-domestic cats were reviewed foremost for the presence of meniscal ossicles and then for the presence of the other potential four sesamoids. The animals in the review included 12 lions, 7 tigers, 7 cougars, 3 leopards, 3 bobcats, and 2 jaguars. Fluoroscopy, arthrography, computed tomography, necropsy, and histology were also used to evaluate the stifles of one tiger after euthanasia. Ossicles were found in the region of the cranial horn of the medial meniscus in most of the lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. These ossicles were found i…

Chlamydia psittaci var. felis is considered as a primary and important agent in the etiology of infectious diseases of the upper respiratory tract and eyes in cats, having zoonotic potential. We investigated 13 cats aged between 2 months and 7 years, in which conjunctivitis, rhinitis, laryngotracheitis, bronchopneumonia and lymph adenopathy was clinically diagnosed. To detect the antigen of C. psittaci the Clearview Chlamydia Direct Test was used for the first time. The presence of C psittaci in 10 of 13 investigated cats and in 8 nasal mucosa smears from 10 investigated cats were confirmed in…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether infection with Tritrichomonas foetus causes diarrhea in specific-pathogen-free or Cryptosporidium coinfected cats.
ANIMALS: 4 cats with subclinical cryptosporidiosis (group 1) and 4 specific-pathogen-free cats (group 2).
PROCEDURE: Cats were infected orogastrically with an axenic culture of T. foetus isolated from a kitten with diarrhea. Direct microscopy and protozoal culture of feces, fecal character, serial colonic mucosal biopsy specimens, and response to treatment with nitazoxanide (NTZ; group 1) or prednisolone (groups 1 and 2) were assessed.
RESULTS: I…

In recent decades, there has been an increase in both the number of sympathectomy techniques, as well as the surgical findings of sympathetic anatomy. Currently the advanced technique of C-arm guided percutaneous thoracic chemo-sympathectomy is widely used for the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis. However, a better understanding of chemical agents in sympathectomy is required. In this study, chemo-sympathectomy was performed in cats, using alcohol, glycerol and various concentrations of phenol, to determine the chronic neurotoxic effects of these chemical agents on the stellate ganglia. The s…

The case records of 37 cats treated for nasopharyngeal or aural inflammatory polyps were reviewed. Thirty of them were managed conservatively with the polyp being removed by traction alone. Long-term follow-up information was available for 22 cats, of which 13 (59 per cent) had no recurrence of clinical signs. The remaining nine cats required recurrent polyps to be removed surgically. Cats with only nasopharyngeal polyps were nearly four times more likely to be cured by traction alone than cats with aural polyps, and none of the cats that was treated with prednisolone after traction suffered a…

Vipera palaestinae is the only venomous snake in Israel whose envenomation is clinically significant. It is found in most of the populated areas of the country. The venom of Vipera palaestinae has hemorrhagic and neurotoxic activity. Viper snake envenomation always demonstrates local effects with or without systemic effects. Cats are considered more resistant to snake bites than other animals. Although several case reports of snakebites in cats have been published, this is the first report which describes cases of cats suspected of being bitten by Vipera palaestinae. These cases differ in thei…

The purpose of this study was to describe the ultrasonographic appearance of biliary cystadenomas in cats and compare the findings to a similar rare form of liver tumor in humans. Biliary cystadenomas are uncommon, benign liver tumors of older cats that may occur as focal or multifocal cystic lesions within the liver. The records of 10 cats which had abdominal ultrasonography and histologic diagnosis of biliary cystadenoma were reviewed. The average age of affected cats was 13.3 years (range 10-16 years). Eight cats were neutered males and two were neutered females. In three cats, the tumors w…

Two of the 25 Bartonella isolates recovered during a prevalence study of Bartonella henselae bacteremia in domestic cats from the greater San Francisco Bay region were found to differ phenotypically and genotypically from all prior B. henselae isolates. These isolates, C-29 and C-30, which were recovered from the blood of two pet cats belonging to the same household, grew on chocolate agar as pinpoint colonies following 14 days of incubation at 35 degrees C in a candle jar but failed to grow on heart infusion agar supplemented with 5% rabbit blood. Additional phenotypic characteristics disting…

Uroperitoneum (UP) was diagnosed in 26 cats. Trauma was the most common cause (84.6%), including blunt abdominal trauma (59.1%), urethral catheterization (31.8%), and bladder expression (9.1%). The bladder was the most frequent site of urine leakage following blunt abdominal trauma (84.6%), while the urethra was the most common site following catheterization (71.4%). Common historical complaints were anuria (53.8%) and vomiting (50%). On physical examination, the bladders were palpable in nine (69%) of 13 cases; four of the nine had ruptured bladders. The ability to urinate did not exclude a d…

Previously, this laboratory has shown that the Maryland strain of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV-MD) causes neurological disease in cats similar to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in people. Using morphometrical methods on neocortical histologic sections we now show a significant loss of neurons in FIV-MD infected cats compared to age-matched uninfected controls. The neuronal populations affected resembles those lost in HIV-1 infection of the brain in published reports, providing further evidence for the utility of FIV-MD infection as a model for HIV-1 infections of the brain.

PURPOSE: Propofol may cause hypotension and the mechanism is complex. The present study was designed to determine the direct actions of propofol in medulla of cats.
METHODS: Mean systematic arterial pressure (MSAP), heart rate (HR) and cardiac contractility (dp/dt) were compared before and after administration of propofol the femoral vein (2, 3, or 4 mg.kg-1), vertebral artery (1 mg.kg-1) or the lateral cerebral ventricle (0.5 mg.kg-1) in eight anaesthetized cats. To study the direct effect of propofol in medulla, pressor areas of the dorsomedial medulla (DM) and rostral ventrolateral medulla…

Cranial mediastinal lesions were detected in three cats, associated with respiratory impairment (case one), spontaneous pneumothorax (case two) and myasthenia gravis (case three), respectively. On gross and histological examination, the first case was considered either a lymphangioma or a branchial cystic mass of the thymic region of the mediastinum; a cystic lesion was suggested by sonographic detection of multiple anechoic cavitations within a circumscribed mass, while fine needle aspiration cytology excluded lymphosarcoma. The second case was diagnosed histologically as a cystic thymoma, bu…

This study describes 10 tomcats with different reproductive disorders. Two of the cats had abnormal sex chromosomes; one was a tortoiseshell and white Cornish rex, while the other was a brown Burmese. The other eight cats were diagnosed as having testicular hypoplasia, diphallos in combination with unilateral cryptorchidism, a persistent penile frenulum, retrograde ejaculation, temporary oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, azoospermia and congenital poor libido. For the cat with a persistent penile frenulum, and the cat with a temporary oligozoospermia, the prognosis for successful reproduction…

Five pregnant queens were inoculated orally with Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts. Twenty-two live and three dead kittens were born 16 to 31 days after inoculation. Four kittens were eaten by queens and, thus, were not available for histologic examination. Twenty-one kittens that died or were euthanatized on day 2 (two kittens), 4 (one kitten), 5 (five kittens), 6 (five kittens), 7 (one kitten), 8 (four kittens), 16 (two kittens), and 29 (one kitten) after birth were studied histologically. T gondii was detected by bioassay and was seen in histologic sections of tissues from all 21 kittens. The

The effect of malnutrition in patients with a variety of ailments is known to be deleterious to their overall quality of life, response and tolerance to therapy, and ultimate survival. These effects may be amplified in feline patients with infectious disease owing to the blunting of immunologic responsiveness that results from malnutrition. This vicious cycle of infection, ensuing malnutrition, and subsequent immunocompromise may not allow the patient to mount an attack on the invading pathogen adequately. The most logical means to reverse this cycle is to ensure an adequate nutritional state
