PURPOSE: Radiation therapy has revolutionized the treatment of primary or liver metastases in colorectal cancer (CRC). In colorectal cancer, conventional fractionation (1.8 ~ 2.0 Gy daily) is typically used for treatment. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of research investigating the potential implications of radiation therapy-induced alterations in the expression levels of regulatory genes on resistance to chemotherapy agents. Herein, we explored the mechanism by which conventional fractionation drives 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) resistance and metformin (Met) rescued 5-FU resistance in CRC.

Two new 6-alkylsalicylic acids, salaceyins A and B were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation from the culture of the endophytic Streptomyces laceyi MS53 and their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data. Two new compounds were isolated from a freshwater fungus [Hongkongmyces sp. (strain G892)] by bioactivity-directed fractionation against Plasmodium falciparum. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated with the use of HRMS and NMR data, and their absolute configurations were identified by ECD spectroscopy. This paper contains a statistical analysis of the dose-time factors influencing late complications in 784 patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the pharynx or larynx treated with external beam irradiation only at the University of Florida.
