In this paper, we present 17 cases with injury of the lower cervical spine associated with widening of the spinal canal. This was due to bilateral fracture of the pedicles of the neural arch, where the body of the injured vertebra is displaced anteriorly, while the posterior elements of the vertebra remain in situ. Eleven patients were male and six female, between 32 and 53 years of age. Ten of them were involved in a road traffic accident, while seven had a fall on the head. We distinguished two types of injury: Type I with anterior displacement of the injured vertebra (12 cases) and Type II

The purpose of our report is to describe a new application of kyphoplasty, the percutaneous anterolateral balloon kyphoplasty that we performed in two cases of metastatic osteolytic lesions in cervical spine. The first patient, aged 48 years, with primary malignancy in lungs had two metastatic lesions in C2 and C6 vertebrae. Patient's complaints were about pain and restriction of movements (due to the pain) in the cervical spine. The second patient, aged 70 years, with primary malignancy in stomach, had multiple metastatic lesions in thoracolumbar spine and C3, C4 and C5 vertebrae without neur

This study examines joint changes in the vertebral skeleton in human remains excavated in 1987 and 1988 at Bronze Age Harappa, an urban cent … itting is also more frequent on vertebral bodies although its expression is relatively low overall. Cervical vertebrae in this sample exhibit the same amount of marginal new bone and much more surface pitting of the vertebral bodies than do either thoracic or lumbar vertebrae; the cervical segment also exhibits the most severe expressions of both types of lesions. Multiple noncontiguous fracture-subluxations of the cervical spine are fractures and subluxations separated by at least one normal intervening cervical vertebra. A review of all 66 consecutive cervical spine fractures treated by the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Ottawa during 26 consecutive months revealed six such cases (9%). These injuries are more common than previously recognized. Special consideration is required in their treatment because of the presence of a mobile intermediate segment in some of these patients.

OBJECT: The uncovertebral joints are peculiar but clinically important anatomical structures of the cervical vertebrae. In the aged or degenerative cervical spine, osteophytes arising from an uncovertebral joint can cause cervical radiculopathy, often necessitating decompression surgery. Although these joints are believed to bear some relationship to head rotation, how the uncovertebral joints work during head rotation remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to elucidate 3D motion of the uncovertebral joints during head rotation.
METHODS: Study participants were 10 healthy volunteers wh…

Although giraffes maintain the usual mammalian cervical number of seven vertebrae, their first thoracic vertebra (T1) exhibits aberrant anatomy and has been hypothesized to functionally elongate the neck. We test this "functional elongation hypothesis" by combining phylogenetically informed analyses of neck length, three-dimensional (3D) vertebral shape, and of the functional significance of shape differences across a broad sample of ruminants and camelids. Digital bone models of the cervicothoracic transition were subjected to 3D geometric morphometric analysis revealing how the shape of the

The typical mammalian neck consisting of seven cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) was established by the Late Permian in the cynodont forerunners of modern mammals. This structure is precisely adapted to facilitate movements of the head during feeding, locomotion, predator evasion, and social interactions. Eutheria, the clade including crown placentals, has a fossil record extending back more than 125 million years revealing significant morphological diversification in the Mesozoic. Yet very little is known concerning the early evolution of eutherian cervical morphology and its functional adaptations.…

BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal fusion surgeries require accurate placement of the pedicle screws. Any misplacement/misalignment of these screws may lead to injuries to the spinal cord, arteries and other organs. Template guides have emerged as accurate and cost-effective tools for the safe and rapid insertions of pedicle screws.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Novel patient-specific single- and multi-level non-covering templates for cervical pedicle screw insertions were designed, 3D-printed, and evaluated.
METHODS: CT scans of two patients were acquired to reconstruct their 3D spine model. Two sets of sin

Unstable cervical fractures commonly require fusion surgery. We present a case of an unstable cervical fracture (AO classification A2.2) affecting the fifth cervical vertebra which was managed by kyphoplasty to achieve a pain-free, functional and stable outcome. The decision to undertake a kyphoplasty procedure was made in the hope of preserving motion and limiting the degree of future adjacent segment disease. We believe this to be the first case of the use of kyphoplasty to be published in the literature in relation to a traumatic cervical fracture. Additionally, at one-year follow-up the pa

UNLABELLED: Case study on the bone density pattern of subaxial vertebral column in African apes.
INTRODUCTION: African apes have been noted to experience fewer back ailments than humans and to have higher vertebral bone density. Yet, research on the subject is quite limited and has usually included only one or few vertebrae. However, to understand vertebral column as whole and how posture and locomotion might have affected it, we need to know how bone density varies between adjacent vertebrae.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bone density in the vertebral body was measured for all subaxial vertebrae o

Data on 348 adult patients with tuberculous spondylitis treated in 1994-1999 are analyzed. The radiation manifestations of spondylitis first occurring in maturity, which amount to 82.3% in the clinical setting were studied in 112 patients. In 50% of cases, spondylitis was a manifestation of multiorgan tuberculosis. The proportion of those with onset in youth increased (27.9). Isolated lesions of the corpus vertebrae were more frequently detected. The processes involving 2 vertebrae were predominant (61.2%), but complicated by foci at new levels. There was a drastic increase in the proportion o

Cervical spondylosis is due to degenerative cervical disc and its stimulation or oppression of the adjacent nerves, spinal cord, spinal artery and other tissue caused by clinical symptoms. The cervical spine is an anatomical structure with activity, while the pillow has a certain plastic fixation effect on the cervical spine anatomy. Therefore, the pillow not only plays a health role in the cervical spine, but also plays an important role in restoring the normal physiological curvature of the cervical spine. Based on this, a multi-functional cervical vertebra treatment pillow is designed, whic

A 2-yr-old male reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) presented with severe midcervical segmental torticollis upon arrival as an incoming shipment. Despite initial medical management, the giraffe developed marked neck sensitivity, focal muscle spasms, and decreased cervical range of motion. Using operant conditioning to assist patient positioning and tolerance to cervical manipulation, a series of manually applied chiropractic treatments were applied to the affected cervical vertebrae in an effort to restore normal cervical mobility. Laser therapy and cervical range of motion…

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between cartilage end-plate calcification and intervertebral disc degeneration.
METHODS: An experimental model of cervical disc degeneration in rabbits was established by resection of cervical supraspinous and interspinous ligaments and detachment of the posterior paravertebral muscles from cervical vertebrae. Mechanical instability in the cervical spine elicited by this surgical intervention accelerated the process of intervertebral disc degeneration. The degrees of intervertebral disc degeneration were graded morphologically. The thickness of the calcifi…

Cervical fractures are rare in paediatric population. In younger children, cervical fractures usually occur above the level of C4; whereas in older population, fractures or dislocations more commonly involve the lower cervical spine. Greater elasticity of intervertebral ligaments and also the spinal vertebrae explains why cervical fractures in paediatric ages are rare. The injury usually results from a symmetric or asymmetric axial loading. In paediatric cases, most fractures occur through the synchondroses which are the weakest links of the atlas. The prognosis depends on the severity of the

Degenerative changes in the cervical spine can produce osteophytes of the anterior margins of the cervical vertebrae. Although cervical osteophytes have been reported to cause many complications, most remain clinically silent. Very few cases of pharyngeal dysphagia and pseudotumoral bulging of pharyngeal wall resulting from cervical osteophytes have been described. Dysphagia in these cases is caused either by mechanical obstruction or by paraoesophageal inflammation due to irritation at the osteophytes processes. We present a case of 63 year-old patient suffering dysphagia secondary to cervica…

A 58-year-old woman with HER2-negative hormone-sensitive postmenopausal breast cancer underwent preoperative bone scintigraphy and CT to search for distant metastasis. Bone metastasis was suspected in the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra. MRI revealed a mass that was hypointense on T1- and T2-weighted images and hyperintense on diffusion- weighted images, with intense contrast enhancement, indicating bone metastasis at cT1N0M1, Stage Ⅳ(M: OSS). The patient underwent partial mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. The postoperative diagnosis was pT2N0cM1, Stage Ⅳ, with the st
