Community health nursing visits for at-risk women and infants.

The purpose of this study was to utilize the Barnard Model of parent-infant interaction and instruments from the Barnard Newborn Nursing Models study to assess 30 pregnancy clients and to help determine appropriate interventions. Upon consent, the 30 study participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: primiparous, unmarried, or otherwise socially at-risk. Thirty-three percent of the participants were under 19 years of age. A doctorally prepared community health nurse (CHN) completed all interventions, including a comprehensive assessment. Over 20% of participants admitted mild to

Pediatric cardiac catheterization with same-day discharge.

A system was developed for cardiac catheterization in children without overnight hospital stay (called same-day discharge). Over a 4 year period, 233 children (aged 5 weeks to 20 years) had catheterization with same-day discharge staying an average of 11.8 hours in the hospital. In all but 1, no problems occurred after hospital discharge; 1 child required readmission for psoas tendinitis after retrograde aortography. Same-day discharge was safely applied regardless of the patient's age, diagnosis, and use of systemic heparinization, large-bore sheaths, retrograde arterial catheterization, or c

Estimating the impact of out-of-home placement on health risk behavior in adolescents exposed to maltreatment: An advanced causal inference approach.

BACKGROUND: Youth who experience out-of-home placement (OOHP) engage in elevated health risk behaviors (e.g., substance use, unprotected sex), with risk potentially heightened for those placed during adolescence. Estimating causal effects is challenging because maltreated youth who are placed differ systematically from those who remain in-home. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of adolescent OOHP on health risk behaviors, applying causal inference methods (g-estimation and inverse probability of treatment weighting; IPTW) to address selection bias and time-varying confounders. PARTI

Patterns of Parental Relationships With LGBTQ+ Youth Aged Out of Out-Of-Home Care.

The study's purpose was to explore the relationships between parents and LGBTQ+ youth who left their homes and went to residential out-of-home care. This study sheds light on different patterns of family relationships, offering insights into the changes that may occur at three points in time: before, during, and after leaving out-of-home care. Employing constructivist grounded theory methodology, 31 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with LGBTQ+ youth aged 16 to 32 (average 21.6) who had aged out of out-of-home care services for homeless LGBTQ+ youth in Israel. The analysis ind

Giardiasis and amoebiasis infections in three Saudi closed communities.

Two hundred and eighteen residents (131 healthy and 87 mentally or physically retarded) of a children's nursery, a foster house and a rehabilitation centre for the handicapped in Abha, southwestern Saudi Arabia, were examined for intestinal parasitism. About 30% of the population of the three communities were found to harbour asymptomatic infections with either Giardia lamblia and/or Entamoeba spp. Giardia cysts were identified in 19.3% of those examined. Entamoeba histolytica was found in 18.4% of the residents of the rehabilitation centre only. Entamoeba coli infections were found in residen

Child- and parent-related determinants for out-of-home care in a nationwide population with neurodevelopmental disorders: a register-based Finnish birth cohort 1997 study.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are among the most common health issues in childhood and adolescence. Psychiatric disorders are known to be overrepresented among children using child welfare services and placed in out-of-home care (OHC). Child- and parent-related determinants for OHC among a national population with NDDs were evaluated utilising longitudinal register data from the national Finnish Birth Cohort 1997 (n = 58,802) from birth to 18 years (1997-2015). The cohort members with NDDs (n = 5,143, 9% of total cohort) formed our study population. Based on their history of OHC, cohort

Return to jeopardy: the fate of pediatric burn patients who are victims of abuse and neglect.

Child abuse and neglect continue to account for a significant number of pediatric burn injuries. Although the epidemiology of intentional burn injuries has been studied, this report compares victims of abuse with victims of neglect. Furthermore, we investigate the long-term fate of both victim and perpetrator. A retrospective search of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center database identified 21 abuse and 21 neglect patients among 238 pediatric admissions (mean age, 5.4 years, mean surface area 14%) from 1992 to 1994. The medical, social, and legal records of each patients were examined by two

Movement behaviour education for parents in prenatal, postnatal, and pediatric care in Canada: A needs assessment.

BACKGROUND: Parents/guardians can greatly influence their child's movement behaviours (i.e., physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep). Yet, they have reported to lack sufficient background knowledge to foster healthy movement habits, and little is known about specific educational gaps. The aim of this study was to explore the educational background and needs regarding promoting healthy movement behaviours in early childhood among parents/guardians living in Canada. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with parents/guardians living in Canada who had at least one child under

Factors Influencing Risk of Homelessness among Youth in Transition from Foster Care in Oklahoma: Implications for Reforming Independent Living Services and Opportunities.

Research suggests that youth aging out of foster care may be at higher risk of experiencing homelessness than other youth. Among this already at-risk population there may be certain characteristics that further exacerbate the risk. This paper uses data collected from various local and state agencies to further examine significant predictors of homelessness among youth who have aged out of foster care.

Dual Misuse of Insulin in an Adolescent With Type 1 Diabetes: A Case Report and Management Implications.

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, nearly one in five children present with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at the time of their first diabetes diagnosis, a serious and potentially life-threatening complication. Adolescence, marked by insulin resistance, fluctuating appetite, and increasing independence, presents unique challenges for diabetes management. Suicidality is more prevalent in adolescents with type 1 diabetes, with higher rates of ideation and attempts compared to peers without the condition. Insulin misuse, whether by omission or deliberate insulin overdose, is increasingly recognized as a malad

Speaking Up: Communication Rights and the Lived Experiences of Children With Cleft Palate.

PURPOSE: A cleft palate is a congenital condition characterized by an opening in the roof of the mouth that can affect speech, feeding, hearing, dentition, aesthetics, and social integration. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of six children with cleft palate in relation to their communication rights as articulated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), specifically CRC Article 12 (respect for children's views), Article 13 (sharing thoughts freely), and Article 23 (children with disabilities). Political prioritization of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis: a qualitative comparative policy analysis in Ghana, Mozambique, and Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Despite global commitments to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, political and resource prioritization remains uneven across low- and middle-income countries. This has led to disparities in financial investment, policy implementation, and health outcomes. This study examines the factors shaping political prioritization of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) in Ghana, Mozambique, and Sudan using the Shiffman and Smith framework to understand how political, institutional, and contextual forces interact to influence national responses. 'I took care of my kids': mothering while incarcerated.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how incarcerated mothers make meaning of their parenting role and relationship with their children prior to incarceration and during custody. The aims of this project were to explore the experiences of mothering prior to incarceration and during custody using the Gendered Pathways Perspective and to examine how mothering intersects with incarcerated women's health and health outcomes to facilitate prevention and intervention strategies. This secondary data analysis used qualitative methods and grounded theory to identify themes related to mothering from 41 inc

Harsh Parenting and Violence Against Children: A Trial with Ultrapoor Families in Francophone West Africa.

Few culturally congruent interventions are available to reduce abusive practices in families living in abject poverty in francophone West Africa. This study tests the effects of economic intervention-alone and in combination with a family-focused component-on parenting outcomes and children's reports of violence in rural Burkina Faso. Female caregivers and their 10- to 15-year-old children from 360 ultrapoor families were recruited to participate in a parallel cluster randomized control trial with 3 study arms: the waitlist (control) group, the economic intervention group (Trickle Up [TU]), an

Evaluation of a community-based education program on maternal and child health needs in a semi-urban locality: a university-community partnership pilot project in Lahore, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan faces high maternal and child mortality rates, with semi-urban and rural areas particularly affected. Community-based initiatives that emphasize local participation can address these challenges by fostering community ownership and sustainability. This study evaluated a community-based education (CBE) module, developed through a university-community partnership, in improving maternal and child health indicators in a semi-urban locality. METHODS: The study was conducted in four phases in Lahore, Pakistan: Phase one included a pre-assessment survey to identify health needs a

Prevention Adaptation of an Evidence-Based Treatment for Parents Involved With Child Welfare Who Use Substances.

Background: Parental substance use, especially opioid misuse and/or methamphetamine use, is a key driver for recent increases in family involvement with child welfare and foster care placements in the United States. There is an urgent need for programs that prevent parental substance use disorders, yet few prevention programs exist that target parents' unique needs and strengths. Adapting evidence-based treatment approaches for prevention might be an efficient, effective way to address this gap. The current study informed the rigorous adaptation of an evidence-based treatment that supports fam

A womb and a tomb: mothers' experiences of single fetal loss in a twin pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancies carry a higher risk of complications and negative outcomes compared to single fetal pregnancies. The incidence of twin pregnancies has increased over the last three decades due to the use of assisted reproduction technologies and advancing maternal age. While extensive research exists regarding the experiences of women following perinatal loss, research on the experiences of women following single fetal loss in a twin pregnancy is very limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of women who endured the loss of a single twin in a twin pregnanc

Homotypical and Heterotypical Intergenerational Continuity of Child Maltreatment: Evidence from a Cohort of Families Involved with Child Protection Services.

Child maltreatment (CM) in one generation can predict CM in the next generation, a concept known as intergenerational continuity. Yet, the form taken by the intergenerational continuity of CM remains unclear and fathers are mostly absent from this literature. This longitudinal study aimed to document patterns of intergenerational continuity of substantiated CM, on the maternal and paternal sides, by examining the presence of: homotypical CM, which is the same type of CM in both generations; and heterotypical CM, which is different CM types in both generations. The study included all children s

Looking fear in the eye: Gamified virtual reality exposure towards spiders for children using attention based feedback.

Many children around the globe suffer from spider phobia. Virtual reality exposure therapy is an effective phobia treatment, but so far predominantly tailored for adults. A gamified approach utilizing gaze interaction would allow for a more child-friendly and engaging experience, and provide the possibility to foster working mechanisms of exposure therapy. We developed an application in which children make spiders change in positively connoted ways (e.g., make them dance or shrink) if sufficient visual attention towards them is captured via eye tracking. Thereby, motivation for and positive af

Assessment of Hepatic Impairment and Implications for Pharmacokinetics of Substance Use Treatment.

Although the liver is the primary site of metabolism and biliary excretion for many medications, data are limited on the liver's pharmacokinetic abilities in cirrhosis. Cirrhosis develops through collagen deposition, eventually culminating in end-stage liver disease that compromises hepatic drug metabolism. Consequently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends evaluating the pharmacokinetics of medications in subjects with hepatic impairment if hepatic metabolism constitutes more than 20% of their elimination or if they have a narrow therapeutic range. A variety of noninvasive ind
