Children with intellectual disabilities in a low-resource setting: a qualitative study of parents' perspectives.

UNLABELLED: Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental condition that substantially affects the lives of children worldwide. Despite increasing global recognition of intellectual disability, little is known about how children's daily lives unfold in low-resource settings. Therefore, this study is aimed at exploring the lived experiences of children with intellectual disabilities in Dessie City, Ethiopia, from the perspective of their parents. A qualitative study guided by a hermeneutic phenomenological design was employed. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with the parents, s

Barriers to Accessing Addiction Treatment for Women at Risk of Homelessness.

Women remain under-represented in addiction treatment, comprising less than a third of clients in treatment services. Shame, stigma, and fear of legal and social repercussions (e.g., child protection involvement) are major barriers impacting on treatment-seeking for women. This is compounded for women at risk of homelessness, with practical and logistical reasons for not engaging in treatment. We conducted a qualitative study with both clinicians and service-providers, and women with lived experience of addiction and at risk of homelessness, to identify barriers to access and help-seeking with

Prior opportunities to identify abuse in children with abusive head trauma.

Infants with minor abusive injuries are at risk for more serious abusive injury, including abusive head trauma (AHT). Our study objective was to determine if children with AHT had prior opportunities to detect abuse and to describe the opportunities. All AHT cases from 7/1/2009 to 12/31/2011 at four tertiary care children's hospitals were included. A prior opportunity was defined as prior evaluation by either a medical or child protective services (CPS) professional when the symptoms and/or referral could be consistent with abuse but the diagnosis was not made and/or an alternate explanation w…

Silent abuse in the blind spot between medicine and law: A case series of Munchausen syndrome by proxy from Türkiye.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a rare but dangerous form of child abuse in which a caregiver exaggerates, fabricates, or induces medical symptoms in a dependent individual, typically a child. It is of the utmost importance to recognize and address this syndrome, which has significant legal and medical consequences. The failure to identify cases in a timely manner and to implement appropriate intervention strategies may result in irreparable harm or even fatal consequences. This study examined four cases involving 15 child victims and four perpetrators. All individuals were referred to the Tur

Bilateral Distal Humeral Physeal Separation-From Birth Trauma to Family Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Chondro-epiphyseal separation of the distal humerus is a rare injury, which can occur as a consequence of excessive traction on the upper extremity accompanying a dystocic birth or one complicated by cephalopelvic disproportion. Such fracture patterns can also result from a combination of rotatory and shear forces, also typically seen following child abuse. It can be easily mistaken for a posterior elbow dislocation, creating a delay in diagnosis. Since unossified cartilage cannot be seen radiographically, these injuries are better appreciated by ultrasound or magnetic resonance

Perinatal complications and child abuse in a poverty sample.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal medical illness has been associated with child maltreatment. Using a Child Protective Service (CPS) report as the defining event, this study explores to what extent perinatal morbidity is a risk factor for maltreatment. METHOD: Medical charts of 206 children ages 0-3 years were reviewed. Data regarding birth history were collected and analyzed in three groups of children: children whose medical record indicated a report to CPS based on prenatal findings (Early Maternal Inadequacy group [EMI]), children whose medical record indicated a report to CPS based only on postnatal

Cultivating emotional intelligence in child welfare professionals: A systematic scoping review.

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to emotions in oneself and others; these competencies include, but are not limited to, empathy, emotion regulation, reflective ability, self-awareness, and psychological flexibility. Such abilities are crucial to meaningful and effective child welfare work. Further, they are part of resilience and healthy coping mechanisms, which are important for those working in child welfare if compassion fatigue and burnout are to be combated. However, little is known about how to cultivate these competencies in child

Factors associated with decisions to refer possible abusive head trauma to a hospital-based child protection team in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Aotearoa New Zealand has a high incidence of abusive head trauma (AHT) and a national children's hospital with an established multi-disciplinary child protection team (CPT). Staff concerned about possible AHT are expected to refer to the CPT, but there has been no research into the factors which might influence those referral decisions. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with decisions to refer head-injured children to the CPT, and to assess whether those factors are consistent with the literature. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: All children <5 years old admitted from 2010 to 2

The emotional terrain of community-based service provision: Advocating for criminalized women in Atlantic Canada.

This paper explores the experiences of community service providers supporting criminalized women in Atlantic Canada, focusing on issues related to trauma, victimization, substance use, and motherhood. These providers work within community-based organizations, assisting clients as navigating complex systems, including criminal legal, child protection, and social assistance. The women they support often face multiple forms of stigma and structural barriers due to their intersecting identities. This research examines how service providers understand the interconnectedness of substance use, crimin
